Front and back covers: Ditmar (Dick Jenssen): ‘The Aliens’ A version of the back cover first appeared on the front cover of SFC 80A, which did not have a print edition, and was posted only as a PDF file on eFanzines.com. At that time, Dick Jenssen gave it the title ‘The Alien’. It was based on an idea by Vida Weiss (Yvonne Rousseau’s daughter). She set the following problem: ‘If you stood at the centre of a (regular) pentagonal room with mirrored walls, how would your reflection appear?’ Dick answered this by using Vue 8 graphic modelling software. The result reminded Dick of Murray Leinster’s classic SF tale ‘The Aliens’. Most of the writers were much easier to talk to, and made me feel much more welcome, than did most of the fans. In 1968, I did my best to enter fandom in Mel- bourne, although I was also trying to finish a Diploma of Education as the final part of my training to become a secondary teacher. I was living with my family in Bacchus Marsh, an hour’s country train ride away from Melbourne. The last train home left at 6.20 p.m., so I could not attend meetings of the Melbourne SF Club. I did visit John Bangsund’s place several times, and there got to know Damien Broderick and George Turner a bit better, talked to John Foyster, and began to talk to Leigh Edmonds, with whom I had most in common. Leigh was about my age, also a bachelor who found that being an SF fan was more than a bit of a barrier to finding a girlfriend, and en- thused about many of the books and records I enjoyed. Count Dracula, from Bram Stoker‘s novel Dracula (1897), is an example of an evil being which belongs to the class of the ―old‖ vampire. Religious fears and the control of the church were much of what contributed to the terrors which the old vampire conveyed. Count Dracula as an example of the old vampire was a demonic creature who has strayed away from Gods grace and could not even bear to look at religious symbols such as the crucifix. The image of the literary vampire has changed with time and in the latter part of the 20th century it has lost most of its monstrosity and religious connotations. The vampire‘s popular image is now more of a misunderstood troubled soul who battles its inner urges to harm others, this type being the ―new‖ vampire.

It develops a framework for tracing the relationships between real world science and technology and innovation and science fiction/speculative fiction involving processes of transformation, central to which are questions of influence, persuasion, and desire. This is contrasted with the more commonplace assumption of direct linear transmission, SF providing the inventive seed for innovation– instances of which are the exception rather than the rule. The model of influence is developed through an investigation of the nature and evolution of genre, the various effects/appeals of different forms of expression, and the ways in which SF may be appropriated by its various audiences. This is undertaken (i) via an inter- disciplinary survey of work on SF, and a consideration the historical construction of genre and its on-going importance, (ii) through the development of a prototype database exploring transformational paths, and via more elaborated loops extracted from the database, and (iii) via experiments with the development of a web crawl tool, to understand at a different scale, using tools of digital humanities, how fictional ideas travel.

    Terry Dowling Wins DITMAR and ATHELING AWARDS Harlan Ellison Wins Fans At Syncon *83 BRUCE GILLESPIE TO RECEIVE WORLD SF AWARD TOE AUSTRALIAN SCIENCE FICTION ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS - THE DITMARS, were presented at the 22nd Australian National Science Fiction Convention -SYNCON '83, which was held at the Shore Motel, Artarmon, Sydney, June 10-13. The highlight of this well organised convention, one of the best all round sf cons we have seen in Australia, was the showman like performance of the Guest of Honour, HARLAN ELLISON. He had all the fans practically eating out of his hands, with the colourful and dramatic style of his speech making, readings and conversation. Besides TERRY DOWLING, the inevitable two awards went to MARC ORTLIEB again and ROBIN JOHNSON received the Special Award for Services to Australian Science Fiction. D Chairperson Minsoo Kang, Ph.D. Carlos Schwantes, Ph.D. Huesing 2 Abstract British spy fiction author John le Carré inspired Cultural Détente, a movement in American popular culture which banished the simplicities of the 1950’s and replaced it with a relaxation of tensions from 1960-1965. Cultural Détente manifested from within Western liberal, democratic society after the strict conformities of the 1950s. After the dissipation of McCarthyism and the anti-Communist crusaders, the public was ready to embrace a ‘thaw’ in tensions. Even with all of the evidence already in place, there has yet to be any historical evaluation of a 1960s Cultural Détente that anticipated and made possible the détente of Richard Nixon.
