Cultural Détente manifested from within Western liberal, democratic society after the strict conformities of the 1950s. After the dissipation of McCarthyism and the anti-Communist crusaders, the public was ready to embrace a ‘thaw’ in tensions. Even with all of the evidence already in place, there has yet to be any historical evaluation of a 1960s Cultural Détente that anticipated and made possible the détente of Richard Nixon.

It will not be like revolutions of the past. It will originate with the individual and with culture, and it will change the political structure only as its final act. It will not require violence to succeed, and it cannot be successfully resisted by violence. […] This is the revolution of the new generation. Charles A. Reich, The Greening of America (1970) During the late 1960s and early 1970s television produced, through a series of innovative and at times unusual shows, what M. Keith Booker terms a “cognitive estrangement” (Booker 2). These shows encouraged viewers to “look at the world in new and different ways, rather than merely act as passive consumers of the television signal” (2). Yet, despite its crucial impact, television cannot be seen as a significant force for social and cultural change at the time. As a matter of fact, it was rejected by the counterculture movement, notably by one of its gurus, Charles A. Reich. Television was envisioned by Reich as an instrument of social control which deeply influenced “public consciousness” (Reich 95). Nevertheless, the present study will try to show how television eventually impacted the counterculture movement. In order to substantiate my claim, I will, therefore, examine how certain television series and films played, to a certain extent, a part in the social upheavals as well as mirrored, through a number of visual echoes, the growing scepticism of the younger generation of the late sixties and early seventies.

    GEORGE MARKSTEIN PROFILE (from Free For All magazine 2005, by Roger Langley) George Markstein, who died in 1987, was a guest at two Prisoner events and also appeared in the 1984 Channel 4 documentary, Six Into One: The Prisoner File. Gourmet and raconteur, in 1980 he appeared at the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts) in London at Six of One's gathering and in 1982 he took part in a Prisoner screening at the Scala Cinema, also in London. He answered questions from a large audience and spoke separately to Roger Langley for the then "Escape" society magazine. Let's now inspect the books and scripts penned by the writer and review his career. Markstein said his intention was to take The Prisoner out of the Village into the world outside. For him, No. 6's adventures had only just begun. He wanted to show the man as being trapped universally, never able to escape. However, he disliked reading too much into the series and dismissed its allegorical aspirations. When he found an episode being screened in Los Angeles, he scoffed at the views being expressed by a psychiatrist, 'explaining' the series to viewers. He was scathing about scholars studying the series for philosophical or sociological courses. Markstein felt that there was much wrong with British TV. His view was that too many people were involved in the running of TV stations and not enough creative individuals. He likened TV merely to a cassette recorder and did not think that the addition of a screen with pictures made television an "art form".
