1. Connexion ARC presents Richard Layzell’s The Naming on May 31 at 6pm in the Charlotte Street Arts Centre Auditorium

The Naming is a major new work by UK-based performance artist, Richard Layzell, which challenges categorization and conventions in contemporary art practice and in ecology. This ambitious project draws on Layzell's previous experience in galleries, the art industry and his extensive work with communities to question evolved norms and perceived boundaries in: institutions, galleries, installations, performances, artist residencies, socially engaged practices, and public spaces. 2. The Saint John String Quarted presents Bass-Ic: It’s All about the Bass in McCain Hall on May 31 at 7:30pm

The Saint John String Quartet is joined on stage by Symphony New Brunswick’s principal bass player, Andrew Miller in a concert featuring these SNB musicians as a String Quintet. The lush sound of the string quartet is enhanced by the extra bass voice.

3. Grand Re-Opening of the Charlotte Street Arts Centre on May 31 from 4 to 9pm

4. Solo Chicken Productions presents A Record of Us in the Black Box Theatre on June 1 at 7:30pm

A Record of Us was created using the text of celebrated New Brunswick author David Adams Richards as the catalyst, resulting in a physical theatre performance that evokes the raw beauty, enduring humour, and hardscrabble realities of life in this province. It was the main stage offering at the 2016 NotaBle Acts Theatre Festival and was created through residency opportunities with Charlotte Street Arts Centre, and the Fredericton Playhouse. This piece celebrates the work of a new generation of NB artists who are now making a resounding impact in their field.

6. POSTDATA with Quiet Parade at The Capital on June 1 at 8pm

The frontman of beloved alternative outfit Wintersleep, Paul Murphy has built a circle of collaborators, friends, and family around him for more than a decade. Murphy first released music with Postdata in 2010, a self-titled debut that saw him working with his brother Michael to record a set of songs that dealt with family, legacy, and connection. Now, Postdata returns with Let’s Be Wilderness, a record characterized by those two old bickering friends: love and death.

7. Pension Clothing Two-Year Celebration at The Capital Complex on June 1 at 10pm

This evening of dance, showcases the work of Dance Fredericton’s very talented senior school as well as the competitive teams from this past year. The audience will be amazed at the high level of talent that is presented in the genres of ballet, contemporary and jazz in this mixed program. The choreography is artistic and original. 11. Jaclyn Reinhart & Adam Washburn at Grimross Brewing Co. on June 2 at 8pm

Jaclyn Reinhart isn't afraid to wear her heart on her sleeve writing and performing songs that draw from real life experiences. This insightfully funny and charming singer-songwriter performs a balance of a roots pop/rock style that blend her influences and love of icons such as Serena Ryder, Jann Arden, and Sheryl Crow.

Adam Washburn is a singer/songwriter from Saint John, NB. His first full-length album, Lift Me Up, was recorded with Dale Murray at Come Undone Records. It was written during Adam's time living in Halifax, NS.

The Young Novelists are a -based band fronted by husband and wife Graydon James and Laura Spink. Wendy McLeod MacKnight will visit the downtown library as she launches her novel The Frame-Up, set in Fredericton! Have you ever looked at a painting and wondered what it would be like if the people or creatures inside the painting were alive? Set in the Beaverbrook Art Gallery, this novel explores this idea, and the story mixes thrilling adventure, loads of art theory and art history, real masterpieces as characters, and plenty of humour. 3. Workshop in Suzuki Method of Actor Training at The Playhouse June 4-9

Returning again after offering training in June of 2016, Theatre New Brunswick is pleased to announce Kameron Steele will once again join us for an exciting week long workshop in the Suzuki Method of Actor Training. The Suzuki Method of Actor Training, created by celebrated Japanese director Tadashi Suzuki, is a rigorous physical practice of actor training that places focus on the body in relationship to and in support of speaking in performance. Day camps for young artists run weekly from June 25 to August 24. Camps run 5 days, or 4 if the week includes a statutory holiday. A limited number of spaces are available for camps. 7. Join the UNB Centre for Musical Art's for this Season of Summer Music Camps

The Centre for Musical Arts is offering a wide variety of camps that are suitable for kids with or without an extensive musical background. With camps for kids between the ages of 3-17, we are sure to find something suitable for your child. Our camps include; Youngster's Camp, the new Electronic Music Camp, Songwriter's Camp, Youth String and String Camp, as well as Band Camp!

8. Summer Band Camps

MacRae Musical Arts Studio will be holding two new summer band camps this August, aimed at children between the ages of eight and eleven. The Junior Band Camp, being held from August 7 to 10, will be open to children who have been involved in their school bands for at least one year. The Beginner Band Camp will take place from August 13 to 17, and will require no previous experience.

Students attending the camps will get to choose between flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone and percussion and will be provided instruments if needed. All activities will be held at The Ville Cooperative in Marysville. Registration opened May 2, 2018 and the registration deadline is July 10, 2018. The NB Film Co-op’s annual filmmaking workshop series presents classes in all aspects of filmmaking from screenwriting to editing to how to become a stunt person in film and television. New Structures in Weaving Do you have the basics of weaving down but want to learn more? In this 5-day workshop, you will be able to choose from a variety of different structures and create an assortment of samples and a project! Auditions | Call for Artist Submissions & Awards

1. Call for Design Concepts: Carleton Street Gateway Columns

The City of Fredericton invites design submissions from New Brunswick professional artists, graphic designers, and architects for the art component of the Carleton Street Gateway Columns. The gateway column includes a 3.824-metre steel column that is a ‘laser-cut perforated and rolled steel sheet’, cut to illustrate a visual “story” within the positive and negative spaces of the column.

The “story” should include elements of the site’s military history (examples include the March of the 104th and the founding of the Canadian military), as well as, the evolution of the Garrison District into a cultural and festival public square space. The artist may also consider other elements from Fredericton’s history and culture. The selected design will be converted to a vector-based digital drawing that will be used to ‘laser-cut’ the steel sheet prior to rolling and installation on bases.

Note that the top of the columns will be capped with a beaver statue, the design of which is not included in the scope of this Call for Design Concepts.

Submissions will be accepted by mail, hand delivery, or electronically until May 31, 2018 at 4:30pm Atlantic Standard Time. Hand or mail delivery to:

2. CBC Poetry Prize

Submit your original, unpublished poetry! You can write a poem or collection of poems, up to 600 words in length. There is no minimum word requirement. The winner receives $6,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts and will have the opportunity to attend a 10-day writing residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Their winning submission will be published on CBC Books. Four finalists will each receive $1,000 from the Canada Council for the Arts and have their poetry published on CBC Books.

The competition is open for submissions from April 1 to May 31, 2018. All Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada are eligible to apply. 4. Council of the Arts Fredericton Performing Arts Scholarship

Students planning to pursue studies in a recognized program in the performing arts are invited to apply. The annual award is valued at $5,000. It is intended for residents of the greater Fredericton area. The course of study can take place at any institution recognized by the Canada Revenue Agency and must involve performance or production. Students at secondary, post-secondary and graduate levels are eligible. Information and application guidelines are available through the Fredericton Community Foundation at www.fredfdn.ca.

5. Artist-in-Residency School Program Grant, Anglophone Sector

The Artist-in-Residency School Program funds art projects which are based on Fine Arts curricular outcomes, and are a collaboration between one or more teachers and one or more artists. Schools in Anglophone districts are eligible to apply to the program by initiating a project together with a professional artist(s) in any, but not limited to, the following artistic disciplines: music, dance, theatre arts, literature (playwriting, storytelling), plastic arts and media arts such as film, and video. The general objectives of this program are to encourage students to express themselves and to think creatively and critically through education in the arts. Funding provided for a maximum of $3,000 per residency.

Applications for residencies occurring in the fiscal year that begins on April 1, 2018 must be received by email no later than September 28, 2018.

Once approved, residencies should end no later than the end of the school year. Only schools may initiate and present proposals with the collaboration of one or more artist. 6. Call to Artists for Recovery Art Show

Addiction and Mental Health Services Fredericton, Horizon Health Network, is pleased to issue a Call to Artists to participate in the 6th annual Recovery Art Show, an exhibition highlighting recovery from addiction and mental illness. Creativity and artistic expression can play an important role in recovery. The purpose of this exhibit is to show art depicting people’s experience of recovery, increase public awareness, spark discussion, teach and change perceptions.

The show will be exhibited at the Fredericton Public Library, November 1-29, 2018. Works in all media, of any size and completed in any year will be considered.
