Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

We do not confine ourselves to the work of English students, nor are we at pains to be littered with the Illustrious Dead and Dying. Our claim has been one of uncompromising independence: therefore not a line in these pages has been written by any but degreeless students or young graduates. It has been our object to gather all and none but the not yet ripe fruits of art, science and philosophy in the university. We did not wish so much that our articles should be sober and guarded as that they should be stimulating and lively and take up a strong line. We were prepared in fact to give ourselves away. But we know that Cambridge is painfully well-balanced just now (a sign, perhaps of anxiety neurosis) and so we were prepared also to find, as the reader will find, rather too guarded and sensible a daring. Perhaps we will ripen into extravagance. Contributions for the second number should be send to W. Empson of Magdalene College. THE ILLUSORY DISTINCTION BETWEEN EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY AND EQUALITY OF RESULT DAVID A. STRAUSS* I. INTRODUCTION "Our society should guarantee equality of opportunity, but not equality of result." One hears that refrain or its equivalent with increasing frequency. Usually it is part of a general attack on gov- ernment measures that redistribute wealth, or specifically on af- firmative action, that is, race- and gender-conscious efforts to im- prove the status of minorities and women. The idea appears to be that the government's role is to ensure that everyone starts off from the same point, not that everyone ends up in the same condi- tion. If people have equal opportunities, what they make of those opportunities is their responsibility. If they end up worse off, the government should not intervene to help them.1 In this Article, I challenge the usefulness of the distinction be- tween equality of opportunity and equality of result. -

Iron Maiden – Live After Death DVD Review By Michael Makuch 3/9/08 I just purchased a blast from the past in the form of Iron Maiden’s “Live After Death” DVD. For the first time in over 20 years this live show documents Maiden’s seminal Powerslave Tour. I used to have a VHS copy many years ago and I haven’t seen the show for many years so it is a treat to be able to own this treasure of a concert film in a high quality DVD format. In fact, this is the first time this concert has been available in any format since it was originally released in the mid 80’s. “Live After Death” is a 2 DVD set and is affordably priced at around $15. The first disc is the original concert while disc 2 contains documentaries, rare live footage, a picture gallery and two promo videos from the Powerslave album. The set beautifully reproduces the graphics and contains a decent booklet, which is a rarity in most DVD packages. We’ve all come a long way from the time I found a busted cassette of “Live After Death” (no doubt tossed from a car in a fit of disgust with regard to the thin tape used in ‘double length’ single cassettes and their ability to bind easily with in-dash cassette players), that needed some reconstructive work that required a risky tape transplant to another tape body and razor sharp splicing to resurrect the music contained therein, to the point where I now possess said concert on CD audio and, now, DVD video formats I couldn’t have conceived of in the old days! The music itself, of course, is timeless. -
