Each photograph is accompanied by a 'particulars sheets' giving full name, date of birth, date of enlistment, trade or calling, birthplace, address prior to enlistment, rank, number, unit and distinctions. The reverse has the signature and address of sender. Series date range 1918 - 1952 Agency State Library of South Australia Responsible Access Open Determination Contents The photographs are arranged alphabetically by the surname of the individual. A - Z Note: The photographs are also available in the State Records‘ Flickr album at: https://www.flickr.com/photos/state-records- sa/albums/72157626501163158 9 January 2017 GRG 26/5/4 Special List to Photographic Portraits of South Australian Soldiers, Sailors and Nurses engaged in World War One 1914-1919 HOW TO USE THIS SOURCE Order by completing a Request Form, quoting GRG 26/5/4 and the photo number as the Reference Number For example: GRG 26/5/4/1508 WW1 Soldier Index - GRG 26/5/4 ABBREVIATIONS LIST Corps identification has been abbreviated as indicated in the following listing. Double entries, e.g. '1 OB, 32B', indicate that at some stage the individual transferred from one unit to another. The first figure is the initial posting, the second (in the case of multiple transfers) the final posting. Due to the complexity of corps structures and the inconsistencies of entries on the original 'Information Sheet' attached to each photograph, a number of units have been embraced under one abbreviation. For example 'Navy' refers to the Royal Australian Navy, the Royal Navy and the Merchant Marine. Similarly, 'AMC' includes the Australian Army Medical Corps, Field Ambulance units and the Australian Army Nursing Service. Similar groupings will become apparent to the user of the Index. Infantry Battalions have been shown as '10B', '16B', '48B' etc. while Light Horse Regiments are shown as '3LH', '9LH' etc. AC Armoured Car Sections AFC Australian Flying Corps AMC Army Medical Corps/Field Ambulance/Nursing Service Art Artillery units (Field/Siege/Royal Artillery (British) and Divisional Ammunition Column units) ARU Army Remount Units ASC Army Service Corps B Battalion (Infantry corps) Base Base Units/Unattached/General Reinforcements CC CamelCo~s Cyc Cyclist Company/Corps Eng Engineer Corps/Mining and Tunnelling Companies LH Light Horse Regiments MGB Machine Gun Battalion/Companies/Sections MP Military Police MT Motor Transport units Navy Royal Australian Navy, Royal Navy and Merchant Marine NBT Naval Bridging Train NZ New Zealand units ORD Ordnance Corps Pio Pioneer Corps/Companies Post Postal Corps Rail Railway Units (Broad Gauge, Light etc) RFC Royal Flying Corps (British) Sig Signalling/Wireless Corps/Companies ST Sea Transport TMB Trench Mortar Batteries (Light, Medium, Heavy) Vet Veterinary Corps/Sections Administration Records - Public Library, Later Libraries Department GRG26/5/4 Photographic portraits of South Australian soldiers, sailors and nurses who took part in World War One (c1918-c1952) Packet Name Date and Place of Birth Date of Enlistment Other particulars Packet 1508 ABBOTT, John 15 May 1897; Woolwich [?], England ["for Military 13 August 1915 10th Battalion, 50th Battalion purposes, age in August 1915 was given as 21"] Packet 751 ABBOTT, William Charlie 3 October 1898; Kingswood, near Quorn 26 June 1918 Rank: Trooper; 3rd Light Horse Packet 2177 ADAMS, Douglas Bernard 12 September 1896; Alberton 10 December 1914 Rank: Sergeant; 10th Battalion (also 48th Battalion?)
