Participants at my weekend seminars, as well as subscribers to my Endtime Issues Newsletter, often ask me: Why are some of my beliefs biblically wrong? How can they be unbiblical, when they are held by the vast majority of Christians? To answer these questions, I have devoted thirty years of my life researching and writing 18 books which examine some of today’s popular beliefs from a biblical perspective. Furthermore, a large num- ber of the 200 Endtime Issues Newsletters which I have emailed dur- ing the past 10 years to over 35,000 subscribers, examine popular beliefs historically and biblically. This book represents an expansion of the studies posted in my newsletters, which are readily accessible at www.biblicalperspectives.com/endtimeissues/ Reasons for Writing This Book Two major factors motivated me to spend one year of my life to further research and write this book on Popular Beliefs: Are they Biblical? The first, is my passion for biblical and historical accu- racy. An example is the five years I spent at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome,

  • 4. a History of Questions on Doctrine
A History of Questions on Doctrine 1 Fidelity or Compromise? Russell Roland Standish Lessons from the First Advent “Ye do err, not knowing the Scriptures, nor the power of God.” 1 With these startling words our Saviour laid bare the poverty of Biblical understanding of the Sadducees, the most liberal element of God’s Church in His day. 2 The contemporary conservatives, the Pharisees, fared no better. Christ prefaced His response to their question concerning the payment of tax with the words, “Why tempt me ye hypocrites?” 3 Christ’s answer to this latter question left the Pharisees so embarrassed that “When they had heard these words, they marveled, and left him, and went their way.” 4 The Sadducees were similarly humiliated before the listening church members who were “astonished at his doctrine.” 5 Here were the leaders of God’s designated church on earth, the intelligentsia of that church, exposed as Scriptural ignoramuses, by a young man whose curriculum vitae lacked any College or University education and whose lone “elementary” education was supplied in a home-schooling environment. Yet at the age of twelve He was vastly superior in the knowledge of the Old Testament to the most eminent theologians of the day. 6, 7 God’s Church at the time of the First Advent was led by ecclesiastical leaders and doctrinally influenced by theologians, both of whom were teaching rank apostasy. To declare this plain fact concerning the Jewish Church in our Seventh- day Adventist Churches of the twenty-first century would arouse little, if any, opposition from the communicants present.

ABSTRACT THE TIME OF THE SECOND COMING AND THE MEMBERS OF THE SANHEDRIN by Alina-Roxana Lupu Chair: Laurențiu Florentin Moț, Ph.D. ABSTRACT OF GRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH Thesis Andrews University Master of Arts Title: THE TIME OF THE SECOND COMING AND THE MEMBERS OF THE SANHEDRIN Name of researcher: Alina-Roxana Lupu Name and degree of faculty chair: Laurențiu Florentin Moț, Ph.D. Date completed: April 2018 Problems The aspects related to the time of the Second Coming of Jesus were a constant concern of the believers and Bible’s scholars. There are many challenging verses in the Scripture that are talking about the Parousia in temporal terms. This present study was to determine to what extend Jesus’ answer before the Sanhedrin (Matt 26:64) was related to the time of the Parousia and with that generation of his accusers.

  • Justinian's Metamorphosis from Chief of Staffs to Th
International Journal of Humanities and Social Science Vol. 7, No. 1; January 2017 538 A.D. and the Transition from Pagan Roman Empire to Holy Roman Empire: Justinian’s Metamorphosis from Chief of Staffs to Theologian*1 Keum Young Ahn; Gerard Damsteegt; Edwin de Kock; Sook Young Kim; Jhung Haeng Kwon; Myun Ju Lee; Nicolas Miller; Dae Geuk Nam; Trevor O’ Reggio; William H. Shea; Alberto R. Treiyer; Koot van Wyk Emeritii, or Retired, or Active Professors and Researchers Abstract The year 538 A.D. became the turning point in the history of the Roman Empire since so many aspects on political, administrative and economical levels were already switched off that when Justinian declared himself to be a theologian from this year and no longer a soldier, he crossed the barrier of his mandate between what is purely civil obligation and what is religious obligation, similarly to Constantine before, and entered in competition with the papal function and this role is evidence of Justinian’s ongoing caesaro-papism. The quest for unification of the empire by unification of the church, the fever for church-building projects with his wife Theodora, the persecution of enemies of the church and heretics, his disdain with the Sabbath although his second name was Sabbatini, his support for suppressing any eschatological fever in line with the church fathers and Oecumenius and yet trying to build the ‘Kingdom of God’ on earth, all this indicate the problem 538 was for the Roman Empire and the Catholic Church. Archaeological and historical original sources of Justinian and contemporaries of popes, biographer of Justinian and a commentator on Revelation (Oecumenius) are very revealing of these times and the shift or transition of what belonged to the Roman Empire handed over since 538 A.D.

  • What Le Roy Froom Did
What Le Roy Froom did to Form a New Movement “Among” SDA’s Le Roy Edwin Froom - 1890 – 1974 Following information was adapted from Truth Seeker Church What Le Roy Froom did: 1) Falsify the history about the original SDA pioneer position regarding the trinity. This revisionist history can be seen in the books Questions on Doctrine and Movement of Destiny. While Froom is not the originator of this tactic he is most certainly the key perpetuater and popularizer of it. 2) Burn evidence to the contrary. This little known fact reveals much about Mr. Froom. True historians do not burn the source material yet Froom did! When I learned about this I was not even surprised. It fit the pattern perfectly because based on the personal letters that he received LeRoy Froom actually knew the truth but chose to lie anyway. It's just more dishonest, underhanded tactics on Froom's part. 3) Promote unbegottenism by introducing new theology and playing a part in having the old pioneer references to the begotten Son expunged. Due to this Froom is certainly culpable for the psuedo-tritheistic doctrine that exists in Adventism today. 4) Manipulate the inspired data from the Spirit of prophecy. Froom did this on a few subjects. Basically he used partial data presentations, out of context quotations and ellipses to make Mrs. White seem like she was supporting doctrines that she really was not (i.e. trinity, [pre- fall, sinless flesh] nature of Christ, [completed] atonement [at Calvary]) [brackets added for clarity] Movement of Destiny or Movement of Deception? Leroy Froom was best known in the Seventh-day Adventist church for his work as editor for several church publications, a church historian, secretary of the General Conference Ministerial Association, and author of several books.

THE MILLERITES AND THE SEVEN TRUMPETS OF REVELATION Os Mileritas e as Sete Trombetas do Apocalipse Gerson Cardoso Rodrigues1 ABSTRACT The purpose of this article is to present the Millerite’s growth, understanding and contribution on the interpretation of the seven trumpets of the book of Revelation. This research will be a documentary study based on published primary sources. Since many Millerites wrote articles and letters in which they mention their interpretation on the trumpets, it is above the scope of this research to comment on all of them. Therefore, the article will focus on William Miller (founder of the Millerite movement) and Josiah Litch (the “theologian” of the movement). Nevertheless, it does not exclude brief comments about other Millerites. Secondary sources will be used where appropriate to furnish information concerning historical context and background of perceptive insights. It is beyond the scope of this research, however, to either depict in detail the development of their interpretation or to analyze what was original from them and what they copied from contemporary expositors. Moreover, this research does not intend to examine every detail of the prophecy but only explore the dates and events they hold as the beginning and ending of the trumpets.

  • A Definition and Short History of Historicism As a Method for Interpreting Daniel and Revelation
Journal of the Adventist Theological Society, 14/2 (Fall 2003): 1–14. Article copyright © 2003 by Reimar Vetne. A Definition and Short History of Historicism as a Method for Interpreting Daniel and Revelation Reimar Vetne Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary Andrews University The main approach Adventists have taken to the books of Daniel and Revelation, the so-called historicist method of prophetic interpretation,1 was no invention of Adventists. It was the most commonly used approach throughout most of church history. Yet today few outside the denomination share the ap- proach, and it seems hard even to get others to understand the Adventist posi- tion. This article will reflect on ways the term historicism has been understood and communicated by Adventists. I will suggest some elements that might be useful to share in conversations with non-Adventist interpretersÑnamely a defi- nition of historicism and a brief history of its prominent usage throughout church history. Follow-up articles by Jon Paulien will reflect on and evaluate the historicist method in light of recent scholarship (this issue)2 and some select cases from the biblical data (forthcoming). The Nature of Historicism Historicism as ÒSchool-of-Interpretation.Ó The traditional way Advent- ists use the term historicism (in relation to interpretation of biblical prophecy) is 1The essence of the historicist approach is part of the official faith of the Seventh-day Advent- ist church, last confirmed in a report by the Methods of Bible Study Committee approved by the 1986 General Conference Annual Council: Òapocalyptic [prophecy] emphasizes the sovereignty of God and His control over history,Ó Òapocalyptic prophecy presents the course of history from the time of the prophet to the end of the world.Ó ÒActions of General Interest From the 1986 Annual CouncilÑ1,Ó Adventist Review (Jan 22, 1987): 19.
