												  Exegesis, Empire and Eschatology: Reading Orosius’ Histories Against the Pagans in the Carolingian WorldGraeme Ward Exegesis, Empire and Eschatology: Reading Orosius’ Histories Against the Pagans in the Carolingian World This essay seeks to uncover nuggets of eschatological thought in three Carolingian commentaries on the Gospel of Matthew. It does so by examining the different ways that Hrabanus Maurus, Paschasius Radbertus and Christian of Stavelot read and in- terpreted Orosius’ Seven Books of Histories Against the Pagans, a work of Christian apologetic history composed c. 417. Orosius’ Histories, which were hugely influential throughout the whole of the Middle Ages, typically have been seen as expressing a dis- tinctly eschatological understanding of the Roman Empire, an understanding that is frequently contrasted with that of Orosius’ teacher and dedicatee: Augustine of Hippo. The exegetical reception of Orosius, which has not yet been subject to close scrutiny, reveals that some ninth-century intellectuals did not use Orosius to show that the du- ration of the world was bound to the lifespan of the Roman Empire. Rather, they em- ployed the Histories as an authoritative account of the beginnings of the ecclesia, the Christian Church. These biblical exegetes fashioned close intertextual bonds between Orosius’ narrative and Matthew’s account of the birth of Christ. By bringing Orosius into dialogue with the central narrative of Christianity, they invested the Histories with eschatological meaning. 1 Introduction Eschatological thought permeated all forms of Christian practice and belief in the Middle Ages, not least because it was written into the scriptural core of Christianity: the books of the Old and New Testaments.1 Consequently, biblical exegesis – that is, the interpretation of the various books of the Bible – comprised a particularly im- portant medium through which ideas about Last Things were communicated to me- dieval monks and clerics, and perhaps also lay people too.

What prompted me to write on this strategic question at this time is the statement that General Douglas McArthur made at the end of World War II, when he accepted the surrender of the Japanese military forces on the deck of the battleship Missouri, on September 2, 1945. McArthur had fully realized that “we have had our last chance” and that the next war was going to be a war of extension, because he understood that a thermonuclear war was unsurvivable. He stated: "Military alliances, balances of power, leagues of nations, all in turn failed, leaving the only path to be by way of the crucible of war. The utter destructiveness of war now blots out this alternative. We have had our last chance (My emphasis). If we will not devise some greater and more equitable system, Armageddon will be at our door. Ford, CSC, S.T.D. ABSTRACT This dissertation investigates and compares the hermeneutics of the French Jesuit theologian, Henri de Lubac (1896-1991), and the German philosopher, Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900-2001). The writings of both Gadamer and de Lubac continue to generate scholarly investigation, including proposals to apply their insights to contemporary biblical interpretation. Although de Lubac and Gadamer were contemporaries, they never directly engaged each other’s writings; this dissertation brings their thought into dialogue. Chapter One provides a biographical overview of the lives of both scholars by situating the texts that will be examined within the broader context of each work. Since de Lubac approached the subject of biblical interpretation chiefly as an historian of exegesis, the first step in this comparative investigation is a formulation of de Lubac’s hermeneutical principles. Chapter Two, which constitutes the major portion of this dissertation, analyzes de Lubac’s works Catholicisme, Histoire et Esprit, Exégèse médiévale, and La Postérité spirituelle de Joachim de Flore in view of understanding his hermeneutics.

In our work primarily key voices, forms and the words of Khazar Turkish have been determined with respect to the features of voice and forms of the existing words remaining from that period. Apart from these determined key features it have been determined the mu- tual aspects of Karachay-Malkar, Karaim, Krymchak and Kumuk Turkish which are known as the remnants of Khazar and it has been intended to reveal the vocabulary of Khazar Turkish. Part one of this book, and particularly chapter four, provides an overview of the history of hermeneutics and homiletics which both aided my understanding of the subject and exposed a significant gap in my knowledge. Specifically, Johnson helped me to see how little I knew about the interpretation and proclamation of the Bible over the last twenty centuries, and how significant a bearing this history has on current issues and debates. Since my Doctor of Ministry concentration is preaching, I thought this gap unacceptable and thus requested an independent reading course which was eventually entitled, “Historical Survey of Hermeneutics and Homiletics.” I set two objectives for the course. First, I aimed to develop a broad and general understanding of the history of the relationship between hermeneutics and homiletics in the Christian church. I have fulfilled this aim by reading a little over five-thousand pages of secondary material, and by building a basic mental framework which now needs to be clarified, strengthened, and built out.

												  Manuscript Number 193 Christ Church Cathedral LibraryChrist Church Library MS 193 Brian Deutsch * Some months ago I had a chance to examine the collection of Hebrew manuscripts at the Christ Church Library. They include several cabalistic works including a large work on the Book Of Creation by a known 16th century cabalist,1 a transcript of Nachmanides’ treatises on Cabala,2 a book on mathematics being a translation of a famous Arabic scholar into Hebrew,3 a book on medicine,4 a treatise on the laws of the Talmud by Mordecai in abridged form,5 a copy of Gersonides’ translation of Averroes, Thomas Aquinas and Aristotle into Hebrew with his commentary.6 There is a further large manuscript on philosophy from an as yet unidentified source,7 and an unpublished commentary on the Bible.8 Several of the manuscripts are signed by the scribes and dated, the earliest of these is from 1410. Little is known as to how these volumes came to the Library, although the recent discovery by Dr David Rundle of an entry in the Donors Book 9 records the gift of thirteen Hebrew manuscripts in 1683 by John Fell, Dean of Christ Church and Bishop of Oxford. The first part of MS 193 is not dated but has the name of the scribe10 at the end and is only a fragment. Bound together in the same volume and is also a most interesting copy of a famous correspondence between the head of the Jewish community in Cordova, Spain, and the king of the Khazars. It was originally written around the year 960, as by the end of that decade the great fear of King Joseph in his letter had indeed happened and the Russians had overrun his land (which is the present day Ukraine, a prequel to todays events maybe?)..

Great buildings, such as Hagia Sophia were built during these times. Despite the distances, contacts with the Scandinavians took place, in some cases cooperation against common enemies. The Byzantine lineages to us are shown starting fr o m different ancestors. There are many royals to whom we have a direct ancestral relationship and others who are distant cousins. These give an interesting picture of the history from those times. Wars took place among others with the Persians, which are also described in the book about our Persian Royal Ancestry. Additional text for many persons is highlighted in the following lists. This story begins with Emperor Tiberius II, (47th great grandfather) born in 520 and ends with the death of Emperor Constantine XI (15th cousin, 17 times removed) in battle in 1453. His death marked the final end of the Roman Empire, which had continued in the East for just under one thousand years after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. No relations to us, the initial Emperor of the Byzantine was Justin I , born a peasant and a swineherd by initial occupation, reigned 518 to 527.

												  The Book of Mormon Claims an Ancient Israelite Heritage ForSwimming in the Gene Pool: Israelite Kinship Relations, Genes, and Genealogy Matthew Roper he Book of Mormon claims an ancient Israelite heritage for the TAmerican Indian, and since identifiable genetic evidence that might connect contemporary Native Americans with modern Jews is lacking, critics of the Book of Mormon assert that this contradicts the revelations of Joseph Smith and long-held traditional views about the Book of Mormon. Further, the critics suggest Latter-day Saints should abandon their belief that the Book of Mormon is an authen- tic account of an ancient American people and concede it to be an anachronistic specimen of nineteenth-century racist ideology.1 Several assumptions underlie these arguments against the Book of Mormon, and these are not always made clear. For example, what do we really know about the hereditary background of Israel and the ancient Near East? Were they a uniform genetic group? What genetic characteristics would distinguish an ancient Israelite population from other Asiatic groups of the same era? Are modern Jewish populations hereditarily the same as ancient Israelite populations? Are modern Asiatic populations hereditarily the same as ancient Asiatic popula- tions? Those who wish to demonstrate on the basis of DNA studies that Native American populations do not have Israelite roots should first establish what an ancient Israelite source population should be like. When one examines the biblical account and later Jewish his- tory, however, it becomes clear that Israel was never a genetically homogeneous entity. Further, examination of the nature of ancient Israel raises similar questions about the genetic heritage of the “peo- ple of Lehi” (3 Nephi 4:11) as described in the Book of Mormon.
