In the same year he became a researcher at the Department of Jurisprudence and Legal History where he worked on a FWO-project on Belgium’s legal periodicals. In September 2014, he successfully defended his dissertation "Vectors of law. History of Belgium’s legal periodicals”. He posited that legal periodicals are not only mirrors but also vectors of law. Vector must be seen as a 'distributor' of ideas about law and justice. The editors, who often responded to social and legal developments, plaedy a significant role. Today he is doctor-assistant at the Law Faculty where his focus lays on legal journals as creators of nations. His hypothesis is that these journals contributed to the development of national law in nation states and also filled the role as 'colonizers'. He also works on the administrative aspects - within both international and national law - of the German occupation in both world wars. Knowing how to use them can be a major advantage when you are a revolutionary, creating a new state, as we shall see (Fig. 1). The territory concerned here is the southern part of what is called The Low Countries, or what was known in the 14th-15th century as the Burgundian Netherlands, and later as the (Habsburg) Spanish (1556-1715) or Austrian (1715-1795) Netherlands. While the chief examples of this peculiar status,- Belgium, Luxemburg and Switzerland,-are plainly, by reason of restricted area and population, in no condition to cope with the greater powers surrounding them, it is not alone their lack of size or strength that has marked them out for permanent neutrality or neutralization, but rather their essential relation to the map of Europe and the many conflicting interests innate in its geographical outlines which have seemed to make neces- sary their fixed withdrawal from plans of rivalry or territorial ambition and the creation in this manner of certain inter-spaces destined for peace whatever may be the fate of their more powerful neighbors. The precise conditions of such a neutrality are to be found in a long line of treaties and agreements comprising within their horizon a great variety of objects. For the purpose of the present examination, however, we shall lay out of detailed view all aspects of permanent neutrality save those attaching to the three governments just named since to consider the various phases of the subject would require much more space than that at the disposal of a single article.

    Lives of Saints Nicholas, Vitalis, Agatha, and Agnes In Latin, illuminated manuscript on parchment France, c. 1788 i (parchment) + 28 + i (parchment) folios on parchment, complete (collation i-iv6 v4), no catchwords or signatures, ruled very lightly in lead (justification 90 x 56-53 mm.), written in a mannered gothic bookhand by one scribe in fifteen long lines, red rubrics, two- to one-line red or blue initials with yellowish-green or red pen decoration respectively, one three-line red initial with yellowish-green and red pen decoration, one six-line modelled blue initial with elaborate red penwork, TWENTY-FOUR ILLUMINATED INITIALS, six- to four-line, with extensions up to ten lines, initials are white-patterned blue, pink, lavender, or orange on gold grounds, often chased, or gold initials on colored grounds, with a variety of different pen and painted decorations extending from the initials, ONE FIVE-LINE HISTORIATED INITIAL of St. Nicholas, a few leaves darkened (likely original color of the parchment), and slightly bowed, initials ff. 1 (possibly touched up), 4. 5, 8 with slight wear, but overall in excellent condition. Bound in brown pigskin, likely in the nineteenth century, coat of arms of La Tour d’Auvergne painted in full color on the front cover, covers bowed, slightly rubbed, but in excellent condition. Dimensions 138 x 106 mm. A very pretty small volume, suitable in every way as a gift for a princess. The fidelity to the techniques of the medieval manuscript evident in this book, which was made in the late eighteenth century, is remarkable, and somewhat surprising at this date.
