The namesake of that typeface was equally as popular as the typeface is now when he was around. Starting out as an apprentice punch cutter Claude Garamond 2 quickly made a name for himself in the typography industry. Even though the typeface named for Claude Garamond is not actually based on a design of his own it shows how much of an influence he was. He has his typefaces, typefaces named after him and typeface based on his original typefaces. As a major influence during the 16th century and continued influence all the way to today Claude Garamond has had a major influence in typography and design. Claude Garamond was born in Paris, France around 1480 or 1490. Rather quickly Garamond entered the industry of typography. He started out as an apprentice punch cutter and printer. Working for Antoine Augereau he specialized in type design as well as punching cutting and printing. Asimismo, ofrece un panorama de los proyectos secundarios que, al hilo del mencionado, han surgido en el contexto del equipo: el primero se refiere a la visualización de datos sobre mapas y el segundo está relacionado con la creación de un repertorio digital de imágenes contenidas en libros impresos en la temprana edad moderna. Smith4 and Katherine Eremin5 Abstract The Emerson-White Hours (MS Typ 443–443.1, Houghton Library, Harvard University) is a book of hours and missal produced in Valenciennes, Bruges, and Ghent in the late 1470s or early 1480s. There are seven full-page miniatures (many more have been removed), fourteen historiated borders, 28 historiated initials, and 24 calendar illustrations in tempera and gold. Text pages have shell gold trompe-l’oeil borders. The illuminators include Simon Marmion, the Master of the Houghton Miniatures (named for this manuscript), the Master of the Dresden Prayerbook, and one of the Ghent Associates. The goal of analysis was to determine if identifcation of palettes supported previous stylistic attributions. Focusing on the illuminations attributed to Simon Marmion and the Houghton Master, we demonstrate that technical analysis can support attribution by identifying diferences in artists’ pigment preferences, pigment blending, and technique of paint application, particularly how the artists render shadows. HISTORY of the BOOK Chapter 5. The Invention and Spread of Printing Blocks, type, paper, and markets, contact Impressions of wood blocks on cloth, or metal stamping in clay, wax, and leather, existed long before the idea of movable type was realized in Mainz. As we have seen, scrolls, tablets, and the bound codex book were all fully developed by the 15th century, and the range of materials pressed into use for writing included palm leaves, bark, walls, and skin in addition to vellum, parchment, papyrus, clay and paper. Of these, paper was the last to be invented, and until the creation of synthetic materials in recent centuries and digital modes of display, paper remained the most important and ubiquitous substrate for written language. And though the use of seals and stamps can be traced almost into prehistory, the idea of printing multiple copies of a text for purposes of distribution to a literate audience is more recent. The first printing for texts was most likely invented in China, with Chinese characters cut in the faces of individual wooden blocks, or whole texts cut in a single block.1 But the innovations brought to this art by Johann Gutenberg in the middle of the 15th century changed the scale and scope of printing.2 Not only was movable type a radical improvement in achieving efficiency for reproduction of multiple copies of a text, but the rationalization of labor that was embedded in this innovative shift created a model that would inform practices well into the industrial revolution hundreds of years later.3 Literacy, already on the rise in the late Middle Ages in Europe, and integral to certain communities in Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, and Northern Africa, would be fostered by increased availability of printed texts.4 Controversies would arise as debates about access to religious texts, in particular, would split along fault lines of belief. -

ISBN: 9788466934930 Bruno Feitler1 It was part of the strategies adopted by every important family in the Iberian Ancien Régime, whenever possible, to dedicate one or more of their children to the Church. Such ordinations were the result of specific vows, strategies of prestige, or simply a way of keeping the family estate undivided. More than one foreign traveler, in his chronicles, drew attention to the high proportion of priests, friars and nuns among the population of Lisbon, for example. Because of their number, but mainly because of their specific status and the role they played, the men and women of the Church constituted an important social group in Iberian society. They deeply influenced the economy and politics of those kingdoms, not to mention the obvious religious and disciplinary roles that they played. Furthermore, between 1500 and 1520, 40% of the books printed in the Iberian Peninsula were religious ones (not taking into account Bibles, but including printed papal bulls). According to Wilkinson, this ratio increased to 46% between 1580 and 1600. Obviously, the men and women of the Church did not write works (printed or handwritten) that were related solely to religious subjects, yet, nevertheless, both these population numbers and publishing data pinpoint the importance of religion, and consequently of the clergy, in the written culture of the Iberian early modern world. The volume edited by Federico Palomo and entitled The Memory of the World: Clergy, Erudition and Written Culture in the Iberian World (16th-18th centuries) provides us with an innovative discussion of the role played by clerics in the production, circulation and eventual printed publication of texts about a broad series of subjects during the Iberian early modern period, ranging from theology to comedies, or from chronicles to scientific treaties. -

Honorary Membership. -At the October meeting of the Council, Geoffrey Keynes, author of the “Bibliog- raphy of William Blake,” lately published by the Grolier Club, was elected an Honorary Foreign Cor- responding member of the Club. A Bequest to the Club. -One of the chief interests of the late Hamilton B. Tompkins was the collection of prints suitable for extra-illustrating “Franklin in France” by Edward E. Hale and Edward E. Hale, Jr. 74 In his will he bequeathed the work, which he had en- larged to six volumes, to the Club, together with a sum of money for binding it suitably. The books have recently arrived and, as soon as they have been bound, will be on exhibition in the Library. They will be greatly valued, not only as an important possession, but as a token of the donor’s regard and thought for the Club. Mr. Tompkins had been a member since 1887. The House. Beyond a rearrangement of the Books in the Library and Print Room, the replacing of the descriptive labels for the Club’s collection of Bindings and the usual cleaning, there have been other im- provements during the summer. The walls and ceil- ings of the Club Room have been thoroughly cleaned and the ceilings of the Hall and Librarian’s room have been recalcimined. -
