Introduction to Busan BUSAN, a bustling city of approximately 3.7 million residents, is located on the southeastern tip of the Korean peninsula. The size of Busan is 765.10㎢ which is 0.8% of the whole land of the Korean Peninsula. The natural environment of Busan is a perfect example of harmony between mountains, rivers and sea. Its geography includes a coastline with superb beaches and scenic cliffs, mountains which provide excellent hiking and extraordinary views, and hot springs scattered throughout the city. Busan enjoys four distinct seasons and a temperate climate that never gets too hot or too cold. Busan is the second largest city in Korea. Its deep harbor and gentle tides have allowed it to grow into the largest container handling port in the country and the fifth largest in the world. In the coming years, capacity is set to grow further with the opening of the New Port. The city’s natural endowments and rich history have resulted in Busan’s increasing reputation as a world class city of tourism and culture, and it is also becoming renowned as an international convention destination. 2. Festivals 1) BIFF Busan International Film Festival: Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), held annually in Haeundae and Nampodong in October, is one of the most significant film festivals in Asia 2 Kyungsung University International Summer Camp 2) Busan Sea Festival Busan Sea Festival is the most significant sea festival in Korea which shows the attractions of Busan, the City of the Sea. It’s held at six beaches in Busan simultaneously in the summer 3) Busan Fireworks Festival This annual festival is held in October at the Diamond Bridge, which is a significant attraction of Busan with tremendous high- tech fireworks. 4) Busan International Rock Festival 3 Kyungsung University International Summer Camp This festival is held at Samrak Riverside Park under the slogan of “Music + People + Nature” 5) Jagalchi Festival Busan Jagalchi Festival is Korea’s biggest seafood festival that is held at Jagalchi Market. It promotes characteristics. 4 Kyungsung University International Summer Camp 3. Tourist Attractions 1) Haeundae Beach Haeundae, the largest beach in Korea, is conveniently located and boasts its 2 km-long white sand beach, shallow waters and a wide selection of amenities (hotels, condominiums etc.) Haeundae Beach is one of the finest beaches in the world with a gorgeous coastline, refreshing walking paths and scenery, and a variety of entertainment facilities. It also offers plenty of things to see and enjoy year round such as the Busan Aquarium, Dongbaek Island, Orukdo Island, Dalmaji Hill, the Yachting 2)center Gwangalli and hotBeach springs 2) Gwangalli Beach Gwangalli Beach is considered an ideal summer vacation spot because of the clear ocean and waves that are not too high or calm, as well as its easy access from downtown Busan and convenient location. A spectacular night view of the Gwangan Bridge makes Gwanganlli Beach one of the most famous beaches in Korea. 5 Kyungsung University International Summer Camp 3) Youngdusan Park Youngdusan means “Dragonhead Mountain” The name came from the shape of the mountain that looks like the head of a dragon rising above the sea. Standing 120-meters high, Busan Tower has an observation deck which commands a spectacular view of Busan and the surrounding sea at a glance. The view is strikingly beautiful, especially at night. 4) Igidae Park At Igidae Park, located in Youngho Dong, visitors can enjoy a scenic drive overlooking outstanding ocean and bizarre-looking rock cliffs. It is also a famous fishing spot. 6 Kyungsung University International Summer Camp 5) Taejongdae Famous for its fantastic scenic view along the seashore, Taejongdae offers visitors magnificent scenery with towering cliffs and intriguing rock formations such as Shinsun-bawi and Mangbuseok. 6) Nurimaru APEC House The name “Nurimaru APEC House” was made from the combination of Nuri (world, glove in Korean), Maru(top, summit in Korean) and APEC house. Thus “ Nurimaru APEC House” means “ the house where world top figures get together for APEC meetings”. It was used for the 2nd APEC leaders ‘meeting and leaders’ luncheon during the APEC summit held in November 2005 7 Kyungsung University International Summer Camp 7) Busan Cinema Center Busan Cinema Center(Dureraum) is set to confirm the Busan International Film Festival’s(BIFF) place as one of the top film festivals in Asia. The multi-story center boasting the world’s largest roof and cutting-edge outdoor stage, located in U-Dong Centum city, Haeundae District, offers a land of 30,217 square meters but spans a total floor space of 54,335 square meter, The theater has one story underground and nice stories above ground. 4. Information of a Public transportation. Subway Busan’s extensive subway system makes it possible to go just about anywhere. There are four lines (1,2,3 and 4) and 8 transfer stations which are Deokcheon, Minam, Dongnae, Yeonsan, Suyeong, Seomyeon, Sasang and Daejue. It means that we can move easily at any where. Destination announcements are made in English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean. The sound of a bird is used for stops that are transfer points, accompanied by announcements in these languages 8 Kyungsung University International Summer Camp 1) How to take subway. ① Buy a ticket at the Auto Ticket Machine or Ticket Booth. I. Choose a ‘section button’,which is divided into 1 and 2 section or ‘line button’ including your destination. Or you can also select 1 day pass ticket and return ticket. II. If you push Line button, you have to find your destination on the next screen. III. After checking the next screen which show money you have to pay, put the money into the Auto Ticket Machine. IV. Pull the ticket and your exchange money out if you have. ② Insert ticket into the ticket slot and retrieve when the ticket pops back out. ③ To exit at the destination, insert ticket into the ticket slot again. The ticket will not pop back out this time. 2) Available Hanaro transportation card for both bus and metro Our university will distribute Hanaro transportation card to foreign students with 10,000RKW loaded to work. Subway (pass) ticket : disposable. 9 Kyungsung University International Summer Camp 3) Fare Table Above a fare table is divided into two sections. First one is about Transportation Card, Tickets and the other is about Metro discount Cards. We do not worry about Metro discount Card because our university will distribute Hanaro Transportation card to all students with 10,000KRW loaded to work. Price is different depends on where to go. All area is settled by two Sections. After you find your destination, then you can get a ticket easily. BUS Fare Cash Fare Hanaro Card ADULT 1200KWR 1150KWR There are three types of buses : local buses, cross-country buses, and airport buses. Local buses are three types of buses : city bus, city express bus and late night bus. A bus fare can be paid in cash (coins), by bus card, or transportation card (used to pay both bus and subway fares) upon boarding the bus. To indicate you want to get off, push the button on the wall. Get off through the back door. * In case of Transportation Card, the free transfer is possible within 30 minutes 10 Kyungsung University International Summer Camp from alighting. However, passenger must touch the Card on the card reading machine when alighting and get off. (limited to only one round. except the same route) Taxi Available anywhere including at taxi stands to go anywhere. An available taxi is indicated by its lighted cap or red sign on its right side. The fare system is based on both distance and time. The fares are 1,800 won for the first 2 kilometers and 100 won for each additional 169 meters. If the taxi is going less than 15 kilometers per hour, an additional charge of 100 Won per 41 seconds is added to the fare. The fares increase 20 percent after midnight until 4 a.m. (late-night surcharge). KTX The Super High-speed KTX, the cutting-edge technological integration which connects the whole nation within three-hour living area in a fast and comfortable way, is the newest and most preferred transportation means for the next generation. Ticket purchasing is made on a reservation system and the reservation must be made at least one week earlier. Kyungsung University has been established by the Reverend Dr. Kim Gil-Chang, a pioneer of Christianity in Korea. Originally the school was called Kyungnam Teachers' College and was established under the ideals of Christian love and service. In 1979 the school was re-organized and renamed as Pusan Industrial University sanctioning as a general university in September, 1983. The name of the university was changed to Kyungsung University in 1988 as part of the process of becoming an international university which can fulfill the needs of today's society. As of 2004, the university has 9 undergraduate colleges(Liberal Arts, Law and Politics, Commerce and Economics, Science, Engineering, Pharmacy, Arts, Theology, and Multimedia) encompassing 5 different faculties and 50 departments.
