the world is undergoing major transformation and rapid change that require world leaders to join in efforts to re-establish stability, growth and jobs. effective partnerships in the tourism sector are critical to the goal of reviving the global economy and leading it out of the present crisis.

the economic activity generated by tourism is responsible for 9% of global gdP and generates roughly 220 million jobs. In brazil it brings in revenues of us$40 billion annually and creates 6 million employment opportunities. given tourism’s dynamic catalytic effect on other sectors of the economy, the brazilian government is determined to join hands with this sector to reinforce tourism’s role in job creation and in achieving social goals through responsible growth policies.

We are proud to host the global travel & tourism summit in florianópolis, brazil. I have no doubt that this global meeting of leaders, representing all sectors of tourism activity from all over the world, will bring about signifi cant opportunities for tourism to help the global economy fully recover from the grave systemic crisis that is affecting all countries around the world.

It is a big honour and a great opportunity for brazil to host the 9th global travel & tourism summit. World tourism leaders will not only be able to experience our vast natural attractions and outstanding cultural and historical traditions, but will also see for themselves the huge potential of our domestic market and the growth of brazilian tourism over the last few years.

since 2003, the year the ministry of tourism was fi rst established, the institutionalisation of the sector has been remarkable. brazil’s tourism sector now operates within a clear policy framework, enjoying increasing investment in infrastructure, and offering a propitious and safe environment for private investment. We look forward to welcoming world leaders to the global travel & tourism summit in florianópolis in may.

our government of santa catarina takes pride in the partnership formed with the World travel & tourism council, brazil’s ministry of tourism and embratur to host the summit in florianópolis. our partnership and the summit will play a signifi cant role in enhancing the role of travel & tourism in developing our economy and creating a prosperous local community.

the World travel & tourism council is the industry leaders’ forum. our mission is to work with governments to raise awareness of the social and economic importance of one of the world’s largest generators of prosperity and jobs. In the current business climate, this mission is now more critical than ever before. the 2009 global travel & tourism summit will be instrumental in fostering partnerships between governments and industry to overcome the present economic downturn and set a steady course back to sustainable growth.

tourism is already a vigorous and expanding economic activity for brazil. Incoming tourism revenue has increased by 132% over the last fi ve years and the sector occupies the number one position in the country in terms of services exports. this achievement is the result of consistent public policy development, which has provided – and continues to provide – the necessary support for this industry to move forward, generating jobs and stimulating economic development while, at the same time, ensuring social and environmental sustainability.

this process, critical for brazil as well as for all other emerging economies, will take pride of place during the key sessions being held at the 9th global travel & tourism summit.

the global economic crisis threatens an end to globalisation and a resurgence of protectionism. banks are retreating from international lending, governments are overtly championing their domestic industries and jobs for their own citizens, and free trade is being challenged. at the same time, travel & tourism – the most global of industries and vital to building closer understanding and co-operation between nations – faces increasing security requirements, visa restrictions and higher taxation. In this session, we will discuss the importance of reviving international trade and investment, and the contribution that the travel & tourism industry can make to ensuring that the benefi ts of globalisation reach all communities. We will identify the barriers that need to be removed by government and industry to ensure that travel & tourism can achieve its potential.

travel & tourism accounts for 220 million jobs, representing 8% of total employment across

the world, and generates 9% of global gdP. and yet, in many national and regional economies, Summit Day Two: 16 May this industry lacks a supportive framework and active partnerships that can help to maximise its potential for growth in the longer term. In this session we explore the role of government in supporting the industry through a turbulent 2009, while helping to unlock its long-term potential – what is the role of the private sector? Media Tour DATE: Sunday 17 May, full day (5 hours)

Media delegates are being offered a full-day post-Summit tour that takes in many of the surrounding beaches, villages and scenic attractions. The tour will start just a few minutes from the Costão do Santinho Resort at the beach of Barra da Lagoa, where the lagoon empties into the sea and where you will have a chance to mix with the locals and observe the culture, customs, clothing and accents of the fishermen and their families. You will continue on to Praia Mole, the ‘soft beach’, with its fine powder sand, and then to Joaquina, a beach surrounded by ever- shifting sand dunes that faces out to the open sea. After that, the tour heads to the Lagoa da Conceição (Lagoon of the Immaculate Conception), a beautiful tourist village famous for its local shellfish-based cuisine.T he peaceful waters of the lagoon are also ideal for water sports and boat trips.

Driving across the island of Santa Catarina to the east coast, you will arrive at the beauty spot Praia do Morro das Pedras, which has an observation point offering a sweeping view of two beaches. To the left is the extremely long, wide beach of Morro das Pedras with its powerful waves that make it dangerous for swimming, but ideal for surfing. To the right is the Praia da Armação, one of the most beautiful beaches on the island; crystal-clear, but extremely cold blue waters lap its broad ribbon of fine, white sand. Despite being an important working fishing village with its brightly coloured boats, this has also become a popular resort with good facilities for tourists.

Further south is the most traditional fishing beach in the whole of Santa Catarina state, Pântano Sul. The beach is almost totally covered with traditional wooden boats of the type once used for whaling. You will then continue to Praia do Ribeirão da Ilha and the oyster farms where the first European community was established on the island. Traces of the 18th-century colonists’ origins in the Azores are preserved through the local architecture. The tour will stop for lunch at a very traditional seafood restaurant that faces the ocean.

After lunch you will be taken to the downtown fish market and the customs house where you will have another opportunity to mingle with the locals, the tour will then head north to Santo Antônio de Lisboa, one of the

oldest villages on the island, for your penultimate stop. This quaint little settlement, which enjoys officialPicture © Emirates, protected courtesy of www.arabian-adventures.com status owing to its outstanding cultural importance, is a treasure trove, preserving the traditions of a fishing village community among centuries-old buildings, as well as a cobbled main street built from rough-hewn stone in the days of slavery. The star attractions here are the church of Nossa Senhora das Necessidades, considered to be one of the most charming on the island, and the 200-year-old Casa Açoriana, now a museum and art gallery. The grand finale of the tour will be a refreshing cocktail by the sea in the magnificent setting of Jurerê International. 29

Matthew D Upchurch CEO, VIRTUOSO

Visionary, futurist and entrepreneur, Matthew Upchurch has parlayed his vision of a global travel network into Virtuoso, a multi-billion-dollar, by-invitation-only enterprise of exceptional travel advisors and travel providers, all working together to mutually prosper while delivering the world’s most satisfying travel experiences. Matthew serves as Virtuoso’s chief executive offi cer, overseeing the marketing, sales and operations that have made Virtuoso one of the most respected and successful companies in luxury travel. He perceived the Baby Boomer generation as one that prefers to work with experts in the important facets of their lives, including their prized leisure travel. Matthew’s entrepreneurial perspective grew out of an early love for travel, service, and innovation. Two family businesses, Percival Tours and Upchuch Travel, enabled Matthew to wear the hats of supplier and consultant, leading to his vision of Virtuoso. Now, 21 years after launching Virtuoso, Matthew keeps the network in the forefront, and its members are among the most successful travel advisors in the industry. Virtuoso continually implements new programmes to empower its advisors with an arsenal of marketing tools, training opportunities, sales programmes and industry resources that are unrivalled – all necessary for a successful career in travel planning. Visiting Santa Catarina is more than just a trip. It’s pure satisfaction! The State offers surprising diversity of geographical and cultural features all year round for all tastes and age groups. Over 500 beaches are scattered along 350 miles of a seemingly hand-carved coast, besides the dunes, lagoons and small islands. The scenery ranges from rural landscapes, progressive urban centres, mountains, canyons, sinuous valleys and rivers to waterfalls hidden within Brazil’s most preserved Atlantic Forest. The local people are hospitable and the State is synonymous with excellence. Its industrial output is exported to 190 countries in all continents. Social indicators and quality of life indexes are among the best in Brazil. Besides the diversity of geographical and cultural features and the excellent economic and social indicators, yet another factor is essential for the success of tourism in Santa Catarina: here, tourism is taken seriously. Tourist towns, beautiful landscapes and a magnificent gastronomy are part of its success. www.sc.gov.br
