Effective partnerships in the tourism sector are critical to the goal of reviving the global economy and leading it out of the present crisis. The economic activity generated by tourism is responsible for 9% of global GDP and generates roughly 220 million jobs. In Brazil it brings in revenues of US$40 billion annually and creates 6 million employment opportunities. Given tourism’s dynamic catalytic effect on other sectors of the economy, the Brazilian Government is determined to join hands with this sector to reinforce tourism’s role in job creation and in achieving social goals through responsible growth policies. We are proud to host the Global Travel & Tourism Summit in Florianópolis, Brazil. I have no doubt that this global meeting of leaders, representing all sectors of tourism activity from all over the world, will bring about signifi cant opportunities for tourism to help the global economy fully recover from the grave systemic crisis that is affecting all countries around the world. 3 Main section 2009.indd 3 27/4/09 12:27:45 The Honourable Luiz Eduardo Pereira Barretto Filho MINISTER OF TOURISM, BRAZIL It is a big honour and a great opportunity for Brazil to host the 9th Global Travel & Tourism Summit. World tourism leaders will not only be able to experience our vast natural attractions and outstanding cultural and historical traditions, but will also see for themselves the huge potential of our domestic market and the growth of Brazilian tourism over the last few years. since 2003, the year the ministry of tourism was fi rst established, the institutionalisation of the sector has been remarkable. brazil’s tourism sector now operates within a clear policy framework, enjoying increasing investment in infrastructure, and offering a propitious and safe environment for private investment. We look forward to welcoming world leaders to the Global Travel & Tourism Summit in Florianópolis in May. 4 Main section 2009.indd 4 27/4/09 12:27:46 His Excellency Luiz Henrique da Silveira GOVERNOR OF SANTA CATARINA Located in Southern Brazil, Santa Catarina and its capital, Florianópolis, are acclaimed for the region’s outstanding natural beauty – 50% of the total land area of Florianópolis is conserved as natural reserves. The national and regional governments’ commitment to the conservation of the natural environment and local culture of Santa Catarina was one of the key factors which attracted the 2009 Global Travel & Tourism Summit. Our Government of Santa Catarina takes pride in the partnership formed with the World Travel & Tourism Council, brazil’s Ministry of Tourism and Embratur to host the Summit in Florianópolis. Our partnership and the Summit will play a signifi cant role in enhancing the role of Travel & Tourism in developing our economy and creating a prosperous local community. We look forward to welcoming you to Santa Catarina. governmentAligning efforts of and the private sector in an active partnership 5 Main section 2009.indd 5 27/4/09 12:27:47 Geoffrey J W Kent CHAIRMAN, WORLD TRAVEL & TOURISM COUNCIL CHAIRMAN & CEO, ABERCROMBIE & KENT The World Travel & Tourism Council is the industry leaders’ forum. Our mission is to work with governments to raise awareness of the social and economic importance of one of the world’s largest generators of prosperity and jobs. In the current business climate, this mission is now more critical than ever before. The 2009 Global Travel & Tourism Summit will be instrumental in fostering partnerships between governments and industry to overcome the present economic downturn and set a steady course back to sustainable growth. Jeanine Pires PRESIDENT, EMBRATUR Tourism is already a vigorous and expanding economic activity for Brazil. Incoming tourism revenue has increased by 132% over the last fi ve years and the sector occupies the number one position in the country in terms of services exports. This achievement is the result of consistent public policy development, which has provided – and continues to provide – the necessary support for this industry to move forward, generating jobs and stimulating economic development while, at the same time, ensuring social and environmental sustainability. This process, critical for Brazil as well as for all other emerging economies, will take pride of place during the key sessions being held at the 9th Global Travel & Tourism Summit. Governments and central banks are spending billions of dollars to prevent a slide into world depression, but will this really create the foundations for sustained recovery? How should the structures of our global institutions, international policy co-ordination and the fi nancial sector be renewed? And how can the Travel & Tourism industry contribute to the creation of a new global economic order? In this session, leading economists from all corners of the globe will discuss the outlook for the world economy, its impact on the Travel & Tourism industry in the short and medium term, and how we can create an effective partnership with governments and other stakeholders to transform economies.
