Once the cradle of political and cultural renaissance of Serbia, nowadays it is a university, administrative, economic and cultural centre of Vojvodina proud of its multicultural approach and multi-confessionalism. The first written documents about the town date from 1694. Novi Sad gained the status of a free royal town in 1848, at a time when Vojvodina was a part of the Austro-Hun- garian Empire. The following important historical dates are related to the period after 1918 when Vojvodina became a part of Ser- bia to form the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, as well as in 1944, when the town was liberated from fascist occupation Today, Novi Sad has about 450,000 inhabitants. Serbian Athens, as it is also called, is a city of education, culture, a city of mu- seums, galleries, libraries and theatres as well. A few hundred year old cultural and educational activities remain a long standing tradition. In 1810, the first high school was established and in 1861 the first professional theatre, the Serbian National Theatre was founded. Matica Srpska, the oldest Serbian cultural institution, moved to Novi Sad from Budapest in 1864. Further develop- ment of the city led to the establishment of new cultural and educational institutions, especially the intensive development of education. Nowadays, there are numerous schools of all levels of education from primary to higher education. University of Novi Sad is regarded as especially important institution. 5 University of Novi Sad University of Novi Sad is the only university on the territory of Vojvodina and the second largest university in the country. It was founded on 28th June 1960 and it is autonomous, edu- cational, scientific and artistic institution of higher education. The University comprises 14 faculties located in 4 cities in Vojvodina: Novi Sad, Subotica, Sombor and Zrenjanin. In the history of music of European nations, the phenomenon of music migration is deeply connected with the history of Czech music and its protagonists. Moreover, the Czech music history represents one of the best examples for the theoretical re- search into migrations. Various and fertile premises and conclusions about the politi- cal, ideological and sociological causes of the musical migrations, as well as about their formal and aesthetical consequences, can be reached by observing the move- ments of Czech musicians across the map of Europe (and even of the world!), particu- larly in the 18th and in the 19th centuries.

International Memory of the World Register Documentary film on Correspondence theatre (Serbia) 2012-79 1.0 SUMMARY Correspondence theatre is a specific form of theatre play and organization, founded in Novi Sad, Serbia in 1974. That year was a turning point in ex-Yugoslavia. The year when one cultural concept, financed and ruled by the state and governing communist party, started to fade in front of a decentralized, so called self-governing, financed by Funds. Theoretically and practically, it was implemented by a group of theatre enthusiasts under the guidance of Mladen Dražetin, as an original model of theatre culture, an extension among the masses. In the beginning, theatre performances were created in the villages and towns of ex-Yugoslavia according to manuals delivered, to the organizers from Novi Sad, from all across the world, via letters, the telephone, the radio and fax machines. The actors in the performances were both amateurs, taking their first steps and professionals opting to taste a new playing and cooperative approach, more frank and informal. The new acting stage was interactive, the protagonists attained to the audience, direct communication with the audience was established, to mutual satisfaction. Within this model, different branches of theatre were established: dramatic, comical, ecological, invitations to peacekeeping and humanitarian actions, puppet/play and live plays in children’s hospitals and institutions. Each individual spectator was provided with the opportunity to make suggestion and remarks which the writers and the acting group would later incorporate to make a new play, one which would always have a humanistic sense. The method was to join two main principles: that each person had common ideals and needs and specific ones.

65Th Sterijino Pozorje Festival Selector's Report

65th Sterijino Pozorje Festival Selector’s Report REALITY – STRANGER THAN FICTION Theatres in Serbia are ending their 2019-20 season in a state of deep existential crisis, but, at the same time – at least when talking about the most relevant productions in these theatres – in a state of an artistically elevated and social self-awareness. What does this (apparent) paradox consist of? The most obvious sign of crisis is shown in quantitative measures. The fact that – according to the statistics – the number of premiers in the entire 2019 was at a historical low unfortunately corresponds with the situation in the 2019-20 season – when talking about the entire “domestic production,” as well as the first performances of contemporary Serbian dramas. Namely, when compared to the previous season, when 52 domestic productions were realized, including 35 first performances, this season witnessed only 38 domestic productions, including 27 first performances of Serbian dramas, concepts, or dramatizations of Serbian prose works. It is evident that this critical state was contributed by deteriorating financial conditions (irregular funding or lower production budgets), as well as organizational and structural difficulties (inability of theatres to hire professional and artistic cadre, artistic balancing), but the main problem is (still) the absence of long-term (sometimes even short-term) repertoire concepts. This absence causes, among other things, unbelievable oscillations in the stage presence of the contemporary Serbian drama – from the dominant stream to the almost episodical role in a single year. Therefore, in the past season, we have witnessed only two new playwrights whose texts were presented on the stage (Staša Bajac and Dimitrije Kokakov) and two real debutants (Ognjen Petković and Isidora Milosavljević) – while a relative counterbalance to this scarcity is the presence of a few successful productions of the new wave of dramatizations.
