I do not like to leave any job unfinished, I do not like to resign real possibilities that are around us and in the same time I try to keep loyalty. Without loyalty achieved success cannot offer us real joy.”1 In 2015, bitef festival, the pride of Serbian theatre circles, got a new artistic director Ivan Medenica, who wanted to reposition bitef festival on the world scale. Knowing my text “The leadership style of Mira Trailović ” (in: Caust, 2013) he proposed to me to organise the conference: Mira Trailović and cultural diplomacy: theatre festivals and geopolitics. From the idea to the realisation, the title of the conference was changed2, but the spirit of Mira Trailović and her contribution to cultural diplomacy through bitef, her activities as the director of Atelje 212 and as the director of the Theatre des Nations in 1982 in Nancy, has been evoked throughout the conference from the introductory speeches of Misha Shvidkoy, Ivan Medenica and myself, till the session: Testimonies that brought on the stage of Atelje 212 her former collaborators with numerous stories related to her visions, ideas and methods of operation –discussing cultural diplomacy in practice. Persistence, optimism and loyalty might be precise words to describe her work in theatre, but not sufficient to understand such a complex personality that had strength and courage to position her small theatre on the world scale, using the BITEF festival as a principal but not the only tool of communication. This conference was homage to her achievements, honouring also results that BITEF had in the years that followed, remembering other actors and partners in this endeavour, first of all, Jovan Ćirilov but also Milan Žmukić and many others (quoting here only those that are not any more among us). Mira Trailović influence went far beyond the institutions she created as those were inspirational for agents on other artistic scenes (music, visual art, film, etc.) in Yugoslavia and even for politicians that understood to what extent her visions might be shared within cultural policy and cultural diplomacy. Paving the way that led towards important social and cultural changes in Yugoslavia, Mira Trailović introduced the spirit of cosmopolitism, citizenship, urbanity as values. At the same time she was the PR machine capable of spinning and campaigning in the society in which those terms have not been known and in which similar activities in other cultural organisations have been considered blasphemy. Mira Trailović compensated her shortage of political credibility by surrounding herself with those who had that official political authority. She knew that it is important to show that she is close to them (for instance, to call some high official in front of the members of the ensemble) but also to secure their presence on each premiere. She always asked the major of Belgrade to open the festival in order to show that BITEF has it’s political importance, respect and value in society, even outside cultural circles. However, she wanted to be considered above all: the theatre creator, whose major traits are responsibility and critical self-consciousness. She used to say: “Only

PUBLIC THEATRE’S SOCIAL ROLE AND ITS AUDIENCEa Ksenija Marković Božović* University of Arts in Belgrade, Faculty of Dramatic Arts, Belgrade, Serbia Abstract Today, public theatre is directed toward adapting to its contemporary socio- economic context. In doing this, it is trying to preserve its artistic values and at the same time fulfill and diversify its social functions and missions. When we talk about public theatre’s social function, i.e. the public value it produces, some of the main issues concern its contribution to the most pressing social matters. In general, these issues concern public theatre’s role in strengthening social cohesion, cultural emancipation and social inclusion, its role in the process of opening dialogues, revising formal history and re-examining traditional forms of thinking. Fulfilment of these functions is strongly linked with the character of public theatre’s audiences. In more practical terms, the scope of public theatre’s social influence is dependent on how homogenous its audiences are. If one considers artistic organizations’ need for sustainability as a key factor in their need for constantly widening their audience, and particularly the inclusion of “others” (those not belonging to the dominant cultural group), in the context of contemporary society’s need for social and cultural inclusion, then the task of today’s public theatres becomes rather difficult. Simply said, there are too many needs to be met at the same time.

Duration: 2hrs, no intermission. 1 THE DRAGONSLAYERS Written by Milena Marković and directed by Iva Milošević, the play Dragonslayers deals with the subject of Sarajevo Assassination, the real beginning of the 20th century. A seventeen-year-old-boy with a gun, a would-be poet whose name – Gavrilo Princip – represents a historical symbol and a frequent subject of dispute, is presented as the protagonist, together with his compatriots and rebels in fight for freedom, usually named as Mlada Bosna. The piece is written as a “heroic cabaret”, in a form of an ironic history lesson, and tells the known story of the assassination using bustling poetic language to express the key demand – the demand for freedom. It is not a historical play, but a contemporary piece which examines the position of today’s young man and his need to express the demand – to be free. Iva Milošević: ‘The key point of this play is that it glorifies the freedom-loving spirit. Milena starts from the assumption that her heroes were fighters for freedom who sacrificed themselves for wellbeing of others in profound and sincere faith.

There is a lack of understanding about how the process of institutional forgetting works and how some memories stay a part of oral narratives and commu- nicative social memory while they are omitted from the official memory represented by the official documents and events of remembering. Inspired by Paul Connerton’s article on the typology of forgetting we explore his typology in selected case studies of three public theaters located in Belgrade, focusing on remembering policy and practices investigating if a type of forgetting typical for a state/society/nation level is possible to be applied in the context of a cultural organization. We agree with Wessel and Moulds that developing common language and terminology would be important and beneficial for cross disciplinary dialogue. In this sense, the study shows how the typology of for- getting in societies can be applied and developed in the organizational memory studies and cultural management. The focus of the research is the dynamics of remembering and forgetting explored through analysis of the interaction between changing context, official institutional memories, and social communicative memories.

    JOY OF EUROPE MEETING IN NIS October 7th Nis City Deputy Mayor Milos Bandjur has met with the children from Macedonia, Bulgaria, Montenegro and Russia who are participating in the international meeting of children entitled Joy of Europe held in Nis. The children’s meetings have been organized for the past 10 years by the Church ensemble Branko from Nis with the help of the Children’s Cultural Center in Belgrade. This is the 10th jubilee festival “Friendship Meetings – Joy of Europe” in Nis, and this year’s motto of the festival has been inspired by the verses written by poet Mika Antic – Every child has wings, he or she has just to remember where they grow hidden, and they will immediately fly. The Ambassador expressed his satisfaction with his visit to Nis, a city of rich history and culture, which is rapidly modernizing industrially.
