Attempt at first intercontinental jet-crossing ends highlights the courage of the attempt

2009, November 25th - The Webtel.mobi Intercontinental Challenge was launched today from Moroco, (Africa) to Spain (Europe), and it saw the Webtel.mobi Challenger effect a controlled marine landing en-route.

The CEO of Webtel.mobi, Stuart Sterzel, declared that although the full crossing from Africa to Europe had not been completed, the event was nevertheless a success. “Nothing that is worth achieving is easy” said Sterzel.

He added: “ All great and significant events have their beginnings, and these very often are not events that work on the first attempt. The significance is not in the crossing itself, but rather the courage to decide to attempt it. This takes courage is required in the door of the aircraft before exit – not on the route – and this courage was displayed amply today.”

Sterzel emphasised that all such attempts need to be planned extensively with a step-by-step approach towards safety and rehearsals, so that they are carried out in as safe a manner as possible.

A former Special Forces Operator before pursuing a career in business, Sterzel personally entered the North Atlantic Ocean from a Search and Rescue helicopter in order to carry out the search and rescue rehearsal himself before giving the green light to the event.

Sterzel said in a post rescue interview that he had never in his life asked anyone to do that which he himself was not prepared to do, but that having carried out the search and rescue exercise himself, he was satisfied that the event could go ahead under maximum safety conditions.

In summary, he said, “I am extremely proud of Yves Rossy, and for me and my company, his demonstration of courage in exiting the aircraft is what it is all about. An example of a fine aspect of human nature, and one that we will always support because it mirrors our own company’s philosophy.

The Challenger and the CEO have both stated their intention to complete the remaining distance of the Challenge in the near future.
