Only the basic definitions and results have been included in this appendix. More complicated concepts (such as stochastic processes, Ito Calculus, Girsanov Theorem, etc.) are discussed directly in the main body of the book as the need arises. A.1 PROBABILITY, EXPECTATION, AND VARIANCE A variable whose value is dependent on random events, is referred to as a random variable or a random number. An example of a random variable is the number observed when throwing a dice. The distribution of this ran- dom number is an example of a discrete distribution. A random number is discretely distributed if it can take on only discrete values such as whole numbers, for instance. A random variable has a continuous distribution if it can assume arbitrary values in some interval (which can by all means be the infinite interval from −∞ to ∞). Intuitively, the values which can be assumed by the random variable lie together densely, i.e., arbitrarily close to one another. An example of a discrete distribution on the interval from 0 to ∞ (infinity) might be a random variable which could take on the values 0.00, 0.01, 0.02, 0.03, ..., 99.98, 99.99, 100.00, 100.01, 100.02, ..., etc., like a Bund future with a tick-size of 0.01% corresponding to a value change of 10 euros per tick on a nominal of 100,000 euros. -

This History of Modern Mathematical Statistics Retraces Their Development
BOOK REVIEWS GORROOCHURN Prakash, 2016, Classic Topics on the History of Modern Mathematical Statistics: From Laplace to More Recent Times, Hoboken, NJ, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 754 p. This history of modern mathematical statistics retraces their development from the “Laplacean revolution,” as the author so rightly calls it (though the beginnings are to be found in Bayes’ 1763 essay(1)), through the mid-twentieth century and Fisher’s major contribution. Up to the nineteenth century the book covers the same ground as Stigler’s history of statistics(2), though with notable differences (see infra). It then discusses developments through the first half of the twentieth century: Fisher’s synthesis but also the renewal of Bayesian methods, which implied a return to Laplace. Part I offers an in-depth, chronological account of Laplace’s approach to probability, with all the mathematical detail and deductions he drew from it. It begins with his first innovative articles and concludes with his philosophical synthesis showing that all fields of human knowledge are connected to the theory of probabilities. Here Gorrouchurn raises a problem that Stigler does not, that of induction (pp. 102-113), a notion that gives us a better understanding of probability according to Laplace. The term induction has two meanings, the first put forward by Bacon(3) in 1620, the second by Hume(4) in 1748. Gorroochurn discusses only the second. For Bacon, induction meant discovering the principles of a system by studying its properties through observation and experimentation. For Hume, induction was mere enumeration and could not lead to certainty. Laplace followed Bacon: “The surest method which can guide us in the search for truth, consists in rising by induction from phenomena to laws and from laws to forces”(5). -

In particular, this distribution will arise in the study of a standardized version of the sample mean when the underlying distribution is normal. In addition to supplying the proof, Exercise 1 provides a good way of thinking of the t distribution: the t distribution arises when the variance of a mean 0 normal distribution is randomized in a certain way. -
Randomized Algorithms
Chapter 9 Randomized Algorithms randomized The theme of this chapter is madendrizo algorithms. These are algorithms that make use of randomness in their computation. You might know of quicksort, which is efficient on average when it uses a random pivot, but can be bad for any pivot that is selected without randomness. Analyzing randomized algorithms can be difficult, so you might wonder why randomiza- tion in algorithms is so important and worth the extra effort. Well it turns out that for certain problems randomized algorithms are simpler or faster than algorithms that do not use random- ness. The problem of primality testing (PT), which is to determine if an integer is prime, is a good example. In the late 70s Miller and Rabin developed a famous and simple random- ized algorithm for the problem that only requires polynomial work. For over 20 years it was not known whether the problem could be solved in polynomial work without randomization. Eventually a polynomial time algorithm was developed, but it is much more complicated and computationally more costly than the randomized version. Hence in practice everyone still uses the randomized version. There are many other problems in which a randomized solution is simpler or cheaper than the best non-randomized solution. In this chapter, after covering the prerequisite background, we will consider some such problems. The first we will consider is the following simple prob- lem: Question: How many comparisons do we need to find the top two largest numbers in a sequence of n distinct numbers? Without the help of randomization, there is a trivial algorithm for finding the top two largest numbers in a sequence that requires about 2n − 3 comparisons. -

DeCarlo Fordham University For symmetric unimodal distributions, positive kurtosis indicates heavy tails and peakedness relative to the normal distribution, whereas negative kurtosis indicates light tails and flatness. Many textbooks, however, describe or illustrate kurtosis incompletely or incorrectly. In this article, kurtosis is illustrated with well-known distributions, and aspects of its interpretation and misinterpretation are discussed. The role of kurtosis in testing univariate and multivariate normality; as a measure of departures from normality; in issues of robustness, outliers, and bimodality; in generalized tests and estimators, as well as limitations of and alternatives to the kurtosis measure [32, are discussed. Approaching Mean-Variance Efficiency for Large Portfolios ∗ Mengmeng Ao† Yingying Li‡ Xinghua Zheng§ First Draft: October 6, 2014 This Draft: November 11, 2017 Abstract This paper studies the large dimensional Markowitz optimization problem. Given any risk constraint level, we introduce a new approach for estimating the optimal portfolio, which is developed through a novel unconstrained regression representation of the mean-variance optimization problem, combined with high-dimensional sparse regression methods. Our estimated portfolio, under a mild sparsity assumption, asymptotically achieves mean-variance efficiency and meanwhile effectively controls the risk. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that these two goals can be simultaneously achieved for large portfolios. The superior properties of our approach are demonstrated via comprehensive simulation and empirical studies. The optimal mean-variance portfolio has a simple explicit expression1 that only depends on two population characteristics, the mean and the covariance matrix of asset returns. Under the ideal situation when the underlying mean and covariance matrix are known, mean-variance investors can easily compute the optimal portfolio weights based on their preferred level of risk.
