Chris Amlin I-LYA 2016 Welcome extended to all I-LYA, GCBA and AYC members 216-531-9052 2 Inter-Lake Yachting Association 2016 From the Commodore This year we celebrate the 123rd Annual Sail Regatta, the 41st Power Boat Regatta, the 61st Junior Sail Regatta and I-LYA’s 131st birthday! This is an excit- ing year for Lady Sharon and me as well as the rest of Team 2016. Every year, the Commodore wants to leave the organization just a little better than the last and we are no exception to that rule. Team 2016 has been working hard all through the winter to find ways to deliver an improved program regardless of sail or power and I believe that our folks have done just that. I am amazed at just how many people it takes to prepare and deliver the events that I-LYA will host this year. The time, dedication, energy and effort that it takes to prepare and plan our meetings and regattas is huge, and with- out the support of our volunteers that sit on the various committees, this simply could not be done. I would like to extend a special note of thanks to Senior Power Chair and Rear Commodore Mike Powers, Senior Sail Chair Jim Miller, Junior Power Chair Bob Lang, and Junior Sail Chair Dave Chapman for heading up our regattas for 2016. There is very little doubt that these events will be successful as a result of their efforts and that of their volunteers. Another incredibly important group are the businesses that support I-LYA in terms of sponsorship, advertising and in-kind contributions. As you read through the 2016 yearbook, please take note of the goods and services these Chris Amlin folks provide and if at all possible, utilize their companies. Without them, 2016 I-LYA Commodore our regattas would be neither financially viable nor affordable. For the 2016 season, The Yachtsmen’s Fund has again stepped up to support our Junior Sail and Junior Power programs. The dollar-per-member contributions that the Power and Sail Clubs make to the Yachtsmen’s Fund allow it to continue to offer the level of financial support that the Junior programs need to sur- vive. If your Club wishes to become a dollar-per-member contributor, please I-LYA contact any of the Fund trustees. Contact information can be found within Event Dates the 2016 yearbook. To all those folks that support the Inter-Lake Yachting Association… Thank you ! 2016 In closing, I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize the Village of Put-in-Bay, April 1–2 Spring Meeting Put-in-Bay Yacht Club and the Put-in-Bay Chamber of Commerce. Together, July 17–21 Junior Bay Week they truly are the best example of partnership between local business, local Aug 3–4 Deepwater Races government, private groups and associations such as ours. His family moved from there to Vancouver Island, British Columbia where his father, Bill, worked in the lumber mill. Eventually the family moved back to Amherstburg, Ontario where Chris attended grade school and later, General Amherst High School. He attended St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario; Georgian College at the Owen Sound Campus for Ontario Land Surveying; and Ryerson University for engineering. After working in survey- ing, construction, and owning his own business, Chris is currently working as a Senior Project Director out of Vancouver, British Columbia for the Ledcor Group. His job requires him to travel extensively and, at times, he seems to spend more time in airports and in the air than anywhere else ! Chris has a daughter, Alysha (Dave), from his previous marriage and she and her husband are expecting their first child. Sharon has a son, Jason (Emily), from her first marriage. Jason and Emily are proud parents of a son, Preston Michael French, who was born on October 17, 2015, making Chris and Sharon first-time grandparents. Chris and Sharon are also very fond of their two dogs Angel and Molly. Chris’ early years of boating involved a 16' fishing boat, a 28' Rinker, a 34' Wellcraft, and finally, the 420 Sea Ray, called Insta Gator III, The Finale! It has been suggested that Insta Gator III, The Finale?? might be more appropri- ate but Sharon is standing firm to this boat definitely being The Finale.

This past winter and spring have brought record rainfall and the highest Lake Erie levels since the 1920s. As a result, even getting on the water has been an effort. Bob Sagan stepped down from the ISCA Marketing Vice President position in December of 2018. He has devoted 15+ years on the board and wants to sail with his daughter more before she grows up. Michigan Fleet 38 has hosted national championships in 2015, 2009, and 2001. Bob designed banners for events and signs which have been used at boat shows and regattas. He was instrumental getting the Interlake in the finals of the Sears Junior Championships in 2014. Bob has always been the “go to” guy at Traverse City. Ramblings p12 use my bully pulpit to again invite and implore all of our Nominations Time p13 membership to take part in the weekend’s activities. In my Coast Guard Day p13 mind, the idea of an “annual regatta” is not just the high Coming Events p14 point of any yacht club’s sailing season, but a time-tested Heard ‘Round the Club p14 responsibility in which our club serves to both draw us together as well as welcoming guests from across our region. On the bulkhead of my Tartan 27, Olin, hangs a framed postcard from a very different era that depicts an extremely familiar scene. Most likely produced in the late ‘40s or early ‘50s, it depicts the awards ceremony at the end of a regatta at the Put-In-Bay Yacht Club on Lake Erie. The scene is identical to that of similar occasions that most of us have attended. If you’ll indulge my practice of undergraduate-level art history interpretation, I’ll point out many of the constants that we see to this day.

By Brad Beebe Y-2692 Looking back on the 2011 Beers, three things come to mind. Wind, wind, and wind. Winds stayed in the 12 MPH range with typical Atlanta Yacht Club gusts for pretty much all of Saturday and Sunday, creating some great conditions for the Juniors, Gold and Blue fleets. The lake was, shall we say, depth challenged as it can be this time of year. But that was a minor nuisance because about the only gasoline burning boats on the lake were the committee, rescue, mark, and spectator boats. Friday started off with Karl Andersen’s annual golf tournament. Ten players competed for the coveted green PFD. Pem Williams, Christa Ross and Steve Ross edged out the other teams to take top honors. • Merganser in the Hebrides 2018
Merganser in the Hebrides 2018 Not counting the voyage from Tollesbury to Ardrossan on the back of a truck we travelled 1200 miles through the inner and Outer Hebrides in May, June, July and August 2018. ‘We’ comprised my wife Liz and I, the true boat-dog Jester and a series of friends for a week here and there. Merganser, a Haines 340 offshore motorboat proved the perfect boat for the trip. A displacement cruiser capable of 18 knots but giving us 400+ range at 8 knots, she had spent her previous few years as a flat in St Katharine’s Dock, hence the family nickname ‘The Sitting Duck’! With two Yanmar diesel engines, generator, 2 double cabins, two bathrooms, 2 large holding tanks, heater, sheltered steering position in a Bimini upstairs and panoramic views from inside the saloon she could hardly have been more perfect for a meander around the Scottish NW. All this and only 1.2m draft allowing access to all the most sheltered nooks and crannies. We chased the truck up the A1 on May 14th and finally caught up the next day just as Merganser was kissing the water in Ardrossan marina at the mouth of the Clyde. After a day of the usual preparation and making sure we had enough stores to be independent out in the islands we set off to Arran. Almost as we left Ardrossan the wind dropped away and the sun came out...it was the start of the amazing weather and, with hindsight, we could not have been luckier with the timing of our ‘sabbatical’! Before going further, it is probably worth setting the scene a little more.

In 1963 or so, my parents and our neighbors in partnership bought an early Tartan 27—the classic S&S design that launched the company. For years, we cruised and raced the boat all over the Northeast as a family of five and thought nothing of staying aboard for a week at a time. When my folks decided to move up in size, they sold the boat to another neighbor, who kept it for 30 years and cruised it all over New England. When he decided to sell, who should step up to buy the then-40-year-old boat but my nephew, who keeps it near Boston and sails it whenever he can…now with a new engine and new sails, but still the same 47-year-old cruiser. So the boat is still in the family. That says a lot about Tartan’s place in the American sailing scene. The boat building company, founded by Ohio native Charlie Britton in 1960, has always been focused primarily on solid, honest boats that appeal to families, whether they are cruising in a Tartan 37 or beating around the buoys in a Tartan Ten. While times change and designs evolve, that fundamental Tartan quality remains the same.In July, I had the chance to test sail the center-cockpit Tartan 5300 Luora, which belongs to Jeff and Linda Lennox.
