WEEKLY BULLETIN 20th March 2015

Dear Parents,

This week saw the eagerly-awaited solar eclipse take place during the morning session of Friday 20th March. Hundreds of students were able to view this event using viewing devices created with the support of the Science department. My thanks to all staff involved and to Mrs Griffiths for her organisation on the day.

We wish or U15 Hockey team all the best as they play in the final of the county cup next week.

Congratulations to Cameron Sykes and Saffron Blake who were recently elected to serve as key members of the Youth Parliament. These elections took place across all schools in the county with almost 6,000 votes being cast overall. We have received special commendation from Cornwall Council for the number of online votes cast by students at Richard Lander School, which was the highest for any school across the county. This is evidence of the engagement of our students to the democratic process. In a General Election year, that is a fine testimony indeed.

On a final note: can I remind parents to remain supportive regarding the school uniform policy. This applies especially to trousers which should not be skinny or tight in style and should not be denim or chino type material.

Only students who had taken part in the pinhole workshops and watched the safety briefing and information video were allowed outside, under strict instruction not to look directly at the sun.

Some students upgraded their pinhole creations with cereal boxes and many members of staff and parents raided their lofts to find their eclipse glasses from 1999. Some students bought glasses or Solar Astro film online and made viewing aids with this material. The ICT department used a webcam to provide a live feed to the school hall for anyone who chose to remain inside. Mr Lloyd-King said: “The weather was extremely kind to the students and staff of Richard Lander, providing perfect conditions to view this rare astronomical event. The solar viewers made by the students were very successful and able to produce clear images of the eclipsed Sun, projected onto white boards set up for the event. Students were encouraged to experiment with the aperture size to produce brighter images at the expense of focus which provided an

Pet Care

By Grace Duffield - in conjunction with Companion Care Vets Truro

Most animals will get a disease within their lifetime, so it is important to vaccinate your pets against several diseases. Dogs should receive their first vaccination at the age of 6-8 weeks, however, this is only a temporary vaccine and needs to be followed up by another one at the age of 12 weeks. Until you get this secondary vaccination you should not allow your puppy out into public areas. Dogs should also be routinely vaccinated for leptospirosis, kennel cough and hepati- tis. For more information contact your vet. Cats also receive their first vaccination at the age of 6-8 weeks, this is then followed up at the age of 12 weeks. Booster shots are then given at 1 year of age, and then once every three years. This vaccine covers feline herpes, calicivirus and panleukopeina. Cats should also receive a rabies vaccine at 4 months of age, boosters are given every 1 to 3 years, depending on local rabies regulations. The feline leukemia vaccination is administered at 8 weeks of age, and followed up when the kitten is at 11 weeks old. Boosters are given once every three years. Chlamydophila shots are given firstly at 8 weeks of age, and then followed by a shot administered when your kitten is 11 weeks of age. Boosters are given annually. Rabbits can be vaccinated against myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD). These viral diseases are almost always fatal, but can be prevented through vaccination. Each year vets see cases of myxomatosis in unvaccinated rabbits. Your vet will advise you on when you should vac- cinate your rabbits.
