SWEET SOUL MUSIC REVUE A Change Is Gonna Come It is August 1955 in Mississippi and a 14-year-old African American, Emmet Louis Till, is being dragged out of his bed by white men. They brutally torture and then drown the boy, because Emmet had whistled at the white village beauty queen and called Bye, bye babe after her. The court acquits the murderers. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, an elderly African American lady, refuses to give up her seat on a bus to a white man. She is arrested and taken to court for violating segregation laws. These events in 1955 mark the beginning of the African American Civil Rights Movement, which will grow into a proud political force under the leadership of Dr. Martin Luther King. By 1968 it will have put an end to arbitrary injustice caused by racial segregation in the U.S. There have been times that I thought I couldn‘t last for long / But now I think I‘m able to carry on / It‘s been a long time coming, but I know a change is gonna come – This soul anthem, composed by Sam Cooke in 1963, speaks of the hope for change during these times. Sam himself had been arrested for offences against the laws relating to civil disorders and rioting, because he and his band had tried to check in to a “whites only” motel. Closely linked to the Civil Rights Movement, soul music delivers the soundtrack for this period of political change and upheaval in the United States.

  • The Funky Diaspora
The Funky Diaspora: The Diffusion of Soul and Funk Music across The Caribbean and Latin America Thomas Fawcett XXVII Annual ILLASA Student Conference Feb. 1-3, 2007 Introduction In 1972, a British band made up of nine West Indian immigrants recorded a funk song infused with Caribbean percussion called “The Message.” The band was Cymande, whose members were born in Jamaica, Guyana, and St. Vincent before moving to England between 1958 and 1970.1 In 1973, a year after Cymande recorded “The Message,” the song was reworked by a Panamanian funk band called Los Fabulosos Festivales. The Festivales titled their fuzzed-out, guitar-heavy version “El Mensaje.” A year later the song was covered again, this time slowed down to a crawl and set to a reggae beat and performed by Jamaican singer Tinga Stewart. This example places soul and funk music in a global context and shows that songs were remade, reworked and reinvented across the African diaspora. It also raises issues of migration, language and the power of music to connect distinct communities of the African diaspora. Soul and funk music of the 1960s and 1970s is widely seen as belonging strictly in a U.S. context. This paper will argue that soul and funk music was actually a transnational and multilingual phenomenon that disseminated across Latin America, the Caribbean and beyond. Soul and funk was copied and reinvented in a wide array of Latin American and Caribbean countries including Brazil, Panama, Jamaica, Belize, Peru and the Bahamas. This paper will focus on the music of the U.S., Brazil, Panama and Jamaica while highlighting the political consciousness of soul and funk music.

  • Transforming Southern Soul: an Examination of Stax Fax and Stax
Transforming Southern Soul: An Examination of Stax Fax and Stax Records During the Late 1960s Chandler Vaught Rhodes Institute for Regional Studies 2017 Vaught 2 Special Thanks to Al Bell Deanie Parker Jeff Kollath Jennifer Campbell And Dr. Charles Hughes Vaught 3 In the early 1960s Deanie Parker moved from Ironton, Ohio to Memphis, Tennessee in order to finish high school and be with her mother, who was living in the city at the time. She attended Hamilton High School, where future star Carla Thomas would also graduate from, and became the lead female vocalist for a student band.1 Encouraged by the school’s glee club instructor, the group took part in a Beale Street music competition for which the first place prize was an opportunity to audition for Stax Records. “And we won that prize,” Parker recalls, “So that was how I managed to get into Stax Records and to learn what it was they did in that old Capitol Theater that had been converted into a recording company. Which was behind Satellite Record Shop on McLemore at College.”2 Though Deanie would not go on to become a hit musician, she would become an integral part of Stax Records. In 1965 Jim Stewart, the president of Stax, hired Deanie as the company’s first publicist. The ultimate goal of her job was to package and advertise the product (the songs and artists of Stax) to both the DJs who played their music and the general public as a whole.3 In the fall of 1968 a new marketing tool was developed that would aid her in this endeavor, Stax’s very own magazine called Stax Fax.

Professor Werner Sollors Jack Hamilton Professor Carol J. Oja Rubber Souls: Rock and Roll and the Racial Imagination Abstract This dissertation explores the interplay of popular music and racial thought in the 1960s, and asks how, when, and why rock and roll music “became white.” By Jimi Hendrix’s death in 1970 the idea of a black man playing electric lead guitar was considered literally remarkable in ways it had not been for Chuck Berry only ten years earlier: employing an interdisciplinary combination of archival research, musical analysis, and critical race theory, this project explains how this happened, and in doing so tells two stories simultaneously.

  • Jan Donkers Jan Donkers Werd in 1943 Geboren in Amsterdam

  • Royal Studios and the Creation of the Hi Sound
Royal Studios and the Creation of the Hi Sound Matt Hicks 2013 Rhodes Institute for Regional Studies To say the city of Memphis has a legacy of music is an understatement. From the home of the blues and to the birthplace of rock n' roll, from Elvis to Al Green, Memphis has served as a conduit of musical ideas, shaping and influencing upcoming artists with the legacies of their forerunners. The concentration of music in this city led to the development of many recording studios. In turn, these studios shaped Memphis's musical output. It is difficult to imagine rock and roll without the recordings created at Sun Studio in the fifties. In the following decades, soul music was nurtured at Stax and then Royal studios, creating a worldwide phenomenon. In many ways, Memphis’s recording spaces – and the producers and engineers that worked them – facilitated the growth of Memphis music. This is especially the case with Royal Studios. Unfortunately, many of the most successful of Memphis's recording studios were forced to close by the late seventies. Sun Studios began its decline after Elvis Presley left the label and am Phillips lost interest. The label was sold to Shelby Singleton and Mercury Records in 1969, and the studio was sold to an auto parts company, then converted back into a recording studio in 1987 and reopened as a museum. Stax met a similar fate in 1975, after several years of distribution problems with Atlantic Records and later CBS Records. Bankrupt by December of 1975, the Stax label was sold to Fantasy Records.
