SRI RAMANA JYOTHI JANUARY TO DECEMBER - 2007 January SIDDHI AND SIDDHA : The power to subvert natural law through tapa is known as siddhi. When a tapasvin acquires siddhi , he comes to be known as siddha. Any human being can become a siddha if he can overpower the urge to respond to sensory stimuli. Once a siddha, a human being can do whatever he wills. According to Tantra , only men have the biology to ignite tapa and acquire siddhi. Only human male has control over his reproductive organs. Plants, animals and women shed their seed during pollution, heat and menstruation whether they want to or not. Hence they cannot retain rasa. Unfettered by the cycle of nature, a man can restrain his sexual urges, retain rasa , ignite tapa and acquire siddhi. – Devdutt Pattanaik SUBLIMATE DESIRES : Forced subjugation of desires can prove dangerous. In subduing desires, we allow them to make our subconscious mind home to unfulfilled desires. This, in turn, leads to mental distractions. The Lord says in the Gita , “Abstinence from food can keep sensual objects at bay, but not the desire or attachment to them.” The Ashwagosha says: “Your celibacy is of no avail if you are adulterous in mind”… Lure of senses increases with every additional consumption of sense-objects. Desire is like an internal chain reaction, which keeps repeating without a break. Fulfillment of one desire leads to many others. In fact, we do not consume objects of pleasure; rather it is the sense-objects that consume us… The solution to the problem is neither subjugation of desires nor free low of desires… It is normal human tendency to forego an inferior object when given a superior object. -

The aS trap Of Western Anatolia And The Greeks Abstract This dissertation explores the extent to which Persian policies in the western satrapies originated from the provincial capitals in the Anatolian periphery rather than from the royal centers in the Persian heartland in the fifth ec ntury BC. I begin by establishing that the Persian administrative apparatus was a product of a grand reform initiated by Darius I, which was aimed at producing a more uniform and centralized administrative infrastructure. In the following chapter I show that the provincial administration was embedded with chancellors, scribes, secretaries and military personnel of royal status and that the satrapies were periodically inspected by the Persian King or his loyal agents, which allowed to central authorities to monitory the provinces. In chapter three I delineate the extent of satrapal authority, responsibility and resources, and conclude that the satraps were supplied with considerable resources which enabled to fulfill the duties of their office. After the power dynamic between the Great Persian King and his provincial governors and the nature of the office of satrap has been analyzed, I begin a diachronic scrutiny of Greco-Persian interactions in the fifth century BC. -

5 Hinduism and Social Work *Manju Kumar Introduction Hinduism, one of the oldest living religions, with a history stretching from around the second millennium B.C. to the present, is India’s indigenous religious and cultural system. It encompasses a broad spectrum of philosophies ranging from pluralistic theism to absolute monism. Hinduism is not a homogeneous, organized system. It has no founder and no single code of beliefs; it has no central headquarters; it never had any religious organisation that wielded temporal power over its followers. Hinduism does not have a single scripture as the source of its various teachings. It is diverse; no single doctrine (or set of beliefs) can represent its numerous traditions. Nonetheless, the various schools share several basic concepts, which help us to understand how most Hindus see and respond to the world. Ekam Satya Viprah Bahuda Vadanti — “Truth is one; people call it by many names” (Rigveda I 164.46). From fetishism, through polytheism and pantheism to the highest and the noblest concept of Deity and Man in Hinduism the whole gamut of human thought and belief is to be found. Hindu religious life might take the form of devotion to God or gods, the duties of family life, or concentrated meditation. SHARING WISDOM A SIKH PERSPECTIVE PAL AHLUWALIA What Is Wisdom? You may read and read loads of books; you may read and study vast multitudes of books. You may read and read boat-loads of books; you may read and read and fill pits with them. You may read them year after year; you may read them as many months as there are. You may read them all your life; you may read them with every breath. O Nanak, only one thing is of any account: everything else is useless babbling and idle talk in ego (SGGS Ji p. 467). Wisdom cannot be found through mere words. To explain it is as hard as iron. When the Lord bestows His Grace, then alone it is received; other tricks and orders are useless (SGGS Ji p. 465). There is a significant difference between one who has acquired knowledge and one who is wise. We know of people who are intellectually brilliant but who lack the capacity to engage beyond their particular area of specialisation. And yet, we know of people who are not renowned for their intellectual brilliance but who have an understanding and wisdom that seems Sikh Perspectives on Sharing Wisdom, Pal Ahluwalia 1 beyond mere intellect. These individuals are often characterised as having character, virtue and insight. They are able to cut through to the core of complexity with elegant simplicity. Wisdom is the ability to know that which is of the deepest significance. This ‘knowing’ comes not through mental calculation or shrewdness but rather through what we may call ‘intuition.’ This form of knowing is about an inner experience, an inner knowing that is embodied within us. -

ISTHMIA PANHELLENIC GAMES The Isthmian Games or Isthmia were one of the Panhellenic Games of Ancient Greece and were named after the isthmus of Corinth where they were held. Both the Isthmian and Nemean Games were held the year before and the year after the Olympic Games (the second and fourth years of an Olympiad), while the Pythian Games of Delphi were held in the third year of the Olympiad cycle. The Games were reputed to have originated as funeral games for Mericertes . Theseus, legendary king of Athens, expanded these funeral games from a closed nightly rite into fully-fledged athletic-games event, dedicated to Poseidon. Open to all Greeks, was at a suitable level of advancement and popularity to rival those in Olympia, which were founded by Heracles. Theseus arranged with the Corinthians, the Athenian visitors to the Isthmian games to be granted the privilege of front seats. At least until the 5th century BC the winners of the Isthmian games received a wreath of wild celery; later, it was altered to pine leaves’ wreath. Victors could also be honored with a statue or an ode. Besides these prizes of honor, the city of Athens awarded victorious Athenians with an extra 100 drachmas. From 228 BC or 229 BC onwards the Romans were allowed to take part in the games. The Games were always under the ownership of Corinth, apart a rather small period during the Roman empire after which, they flourished until Theodosius I suppressed them as a pagan ritual Before the games began, a truce was declared by Corinth to grant athletes safe passage through Greece. -
