Last but not least, I would like to thank my research participants because without their contribution and support this project would not have been possible. iii Abstract In the current climate, there is a need to give particular attention to the racialization of Muslim women in order to understand their experiences. In the U.S., there are current discriminatory policies towards Muslims, such as Trump’s travel ban, increased incidents of hate against Muslims, and the spread of negative stereotypes about Muslims and Islam. In this study, I interview thirty-four Muslim female students to show the experiences of Muslim women at the intersection of multiple identities. These multiple identities: religion, gender, race, culture, citizenship status, clothing and various levels of religiosity such as wearing a headscarf, and national background shape these women’s perception of the hijab, their racial identification, and their coping strategies. The following three research questions are explored: 1) How do Muslim female students experience practices of racialization, regarding the outside and inside campus environment on the University of Tennessee campus where the majority of its enrollment is self- identified as Christian? (2) How does the intersection of religion, race, ethnicity, nationality, citizenship, and gender effect the identity formation of Muslim female university students in U.S.? (3) What are Muslim female students’ opinions, reactions, and coping strategies towards negative stereotypes about Muslim women and Islam in U.S.? The results demonstrate the diversity among Muslim female students in how they think and identify. Important intersecting markers such as being hijabi/non-hijabi; being a white/person of color; being an American citizen/non-American; speaking English as a native language/second language; coming from a secular country/religious country showcase differences in terms of how all women experienced racialization but in different ways. They also defined differently the meaning of the hijab and their racial identities and they selected different coping strategies to challenge the negative stereotypes of Muslims and Islam that have been on the rise in Trump’s era. I examine how these young people develop and articulate a sense of who they are in the context of their parents‟ immigration and the extent to which their identities are determined and conditioned by their everyday lives. I also grapple with the implications of identity formation for the educational achievements of second generation youth by addressing how the identity choices made by young Punjabi Canadian men influence their educational performances. Using data collected by the Ministry of Education of British Columbia, I develop a quantitative profile of the educational achievements of Punjabi students enrolled in public secondary schools in the Greater Vancouver Region. This profile indicates that while most Punjabi students are completing secondary school, many, particularly the young men, are graduating with grade point averages at the lower end of the continuum and are failing to meet provincial expectations in Foundation Skills Assessments.

Using methodologies in literature and the visual/performing arts, this thesis interrogates matters of social process: specifically, settler-colonialism’s discursive management of the social identities – in effect, the social place – of metis women, and how metis women negotiate this highly raced and gendered identity space. Emphasizing Canadian contexts, the images examined are drawn from North American settler-colonial pop-culture texts produced in the late nineteenth- through the early twenty-first centuries; the metisse responses to them are gathered from the same time period. The thesis includes American-produced images of the halfbreed girl due to the historic relationship between the two nations and the significant consumption of mass-produced American pop-culture media by Canadians – historically and currently. The first tier of the study demonstrates how the figure of the halfbreed girl is rendered abject through textual strategies that situate her at the intersection of the dichotomies, civilization/savagery and Madonna/whore, generating the racialized Princess/squaw polemic.

Porter, Ph.D. Abstract “From Conformity to Protest” examines the visual representations of Latinos in American popular culture—specifically in film, television, and advertising—from the 1930s through the early 1980s. It follows the changing portrayals of Latinos in popular culture and how they reflected the larger societal phenomena of conformity, the battle for civil rights and inclusion, and the debate over identity politics and cultural authenticity. It also explores how these images affected Latinos’ sense of identity, particularly racial and ethnic identities, and their sense of belonging in American society. This dissertation traces the evolution of Latinos in popular culture through the various cultural anxieties in the United States in the middle half of the twentieth century, including immigration, citizenship, and civil rights. Those tensions profoundly transformed the politics and social dynamics of American society and affected how Americans thought of and reacted to Latinos and how Latinos thought of themselves. This work begins in the 1930s when Latin Americans largely accepted portrayals of themselves as cultural stereotypes, but longed for inclusion as “white” Americans. The narrative of conformity continues through the 1950s as the middle chapters thematically and chronologically examine how mainstream cultural producers portrayed different Latino groups—including Chicanos (or Mexican Americans), Puerto Ricans, and Cubans.

The primary goal of this study is to explore how a racial identity of “Brown” is conceptualized, expressed, and negotiated in the Euro- centered White space of schools. To do this, I interview five 1.5-generation immigrant youth from the Greater Toronto Area who self-identify as “Brown.” This study finds that “Brown” is a fluid, multi-layered identity that is expressed differently in different contexts. Further, “Brown” youth use the identifier of “Brown” as a way to make space for their identities because “Brown” experiences are silenced in the Black/White binary in which racial conversations take place. Moreover, this study finds that although “Brown” youth encounter racism in school, they rationalize these acts. By examining discursive representations of Brownness and Brown Identity in the Brown Canada Project, a community-led project of the Council of Agencies Serving South Asians, it introduces a new framework for conceptualizing the racialization, identity, and resistance of South Asians in the Greater Toronto Area. The thesis reveals three key themes: the salience of Brown identity in terms of a spirit injury that results from migration, assertion of pride in resistance, and how shared values and experiences of racism form pedagogies for education and community-building. These themes inform a theory of Brown identity and Brownness for anti-racist and anti-colonial resistance. This thesis aims to inform anti-racist and anti-colonial educational practices, political activism, and social movements. The racialization of international students in the United States is a complex process of socialization that exposes them to the underlying dynamics of privilege and oppression in American society. In this scholarly personal narrative on selfhood and identity, I deconstruct what it means to be a racialized international student of color in the United States. Following a trajectory of self-conflict and self-awareness, which slowly yet profoundly stripped away the myriad layers of my socialization, I reconstruct a multi-layered understanding of my racialized identity using Accapadi’s (2012) polycultural model of Asian American identity consciousness.

    Racial Formation in the United States Racial Formation in the United States is appearing here in an entirely new edition, 20 years since its last publication. Authors Michael Omi and Howard Winant have maintained the structure and vision of their classic work, but have completely revised and rewritten every chapter. The ambitious purpose of the book remains the same: to develop a theory of race and racism adequate to their complexity, historical depth, and ongoing political impor- tance. Racial Formation explains how concepts of race are created and transformed, how race shapes U.S. society, and how it permeates both identities and institutions. Some of the contemporary themes that Omi and Winant discuss are: the steady journey of the U.S. toward a majority nonwhite population, the creativity and political legacy of post-World War II anti-racism, the linkage between colorblind racial ideology and neoliberalism, the new racial genomics, the emergence of “implicit bias” accounts of race, the rise of a mass immigrants rights movement, the achievement of race/class/gender intersectionality theories, and the election and reelection of a black president of the United States. In Part I the authors review and critique the main theories of race—the ethnicity-, class-, and nation-based paradigms—examining the main contemporary trends and limits in racial theory.
