SOAR STUDENTS TOUR IRELAND & SCOTLAND WORLD BIBLE SCHOOL SHARING THE LIGHT OF CHRIST PLAY TO LEARN - EARLY LEARNING VILLAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Dr. Mark Benton

Cultivating a Christian Worldview

In the late , I began to hear educators who had a remarkable head knowledge of speak about cultivating a Christian God but whose volitional faith reflected a “Ephesians 2:10… worldview in their students. “The Challenge significant disconnect. Over the past 20 years, reminds us that God has of Postmodernism” by Dr. David Dockery this disconnect has turned into a chasm and was one of the first books that I read that has stirred within me a sense of urgency — uniquely designed every addressed the idea of equipping young an urgency to make sure that ALL we do people to live in a postmodern/post-Christian at Jackson Christian radiates from a Biblical individual to accomplish society. This book produced a paradigm shift purpose. It is this urgency that prompts for me that changed my total perspective us to remind our teachers, coaches, and specific tasks.” of Christian education. I realized, for the administrators that we ensure that every first time, that Christian education was activity our students are involved in serves to every individual to accomplish specific tasks. more than a great secular education with a glorify God. Oswald Chambers takes this belief to a new Christian veneer comprised of Bible classes level by stating, “We have the idea that God is and chapel. I realized Christian education At Jackson Christian, we believe that God leading us toward a particular end or a desired had to be approached holistically while being created us for His designed purpose. goal, but He is not...It is the process, not the taught intentionally from a biblical worldview. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s outcome, that is glorifying to God.” Dockery’s book changed the lens through handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good which I viewed Christian education and even works, which God prepared in advance for Jackson Christian is dedicated to teaching our changed the direction of my doctoral thesis. us to do.” Notice that “works” is plural. This students that using their God-given gifts in suggests that we were designed to serve every area of life is how we will glorify Him. I realized in the early that many in a variety of roles throughout our lives. It And glorifying Him is a lifetime pursuit that Christian schools were producing students reminds us that God has uniquely designed produces an eternal reward.

Accreditation: Jackson Christian completed its five-year accreditation review through the National Association and AdvancED (formally SACS). The external review is an integral component of AdvancED Performance Accreditation and provides the institution with a comprehensive evaluation. The evaluation is guided by the results of diagnostic instruments, in-depth review of data and documentation and the professional judgment of a team of qualified and highly-trained evaluators. A series of diagnostic instruments examines the impact of teaching and learning on student performance, the capacity of leadership to effect continuous improvement and the degree to which the institution optimizes its use of available resources to facilitate and support student success. The results of this evaluation are represented in the Index of Education Quality (IEQ™). The AdvancED national average for the IEQ is 282.79. Jackson Christian scored a 317.95 on the IEQ. 6 Graduation 2019 Jackson Christian Preschool students through seniors in high school are closing one chapter of their lives and looking forward to the next chapter. With each micro-credential earned, a teacher demonstrates mastery within that area of STEM practice. If an educator completes all four micro-credentials, he or she will receive a stack of micro- credentials and be recognized by the Tennessee Department of Education as a Master STEM Educator.

Jackson Christian Elementary has eight Master STEM Educators: Jenna Melton, Amy Groves, Blair Beckham, Holley Webb, Brenda Johnson, Ruth Anne Smith, Donna Coffman and Allison Walker.

Jackson Christian Director of Elementary Linda Bradford stated, “This has been an amazing personalized STEM professional learning opportunity that is recognized by the state. I am proud of all our teachers and the work they have done with STEM, and I’m especially proud of these eight who have worked to achieve this recognition.”

STEM at Jackson Christian is known as STREAM, representing Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math.

LEADER 2019 Share the Light of Christ WORLD BIBLE SCHOOL

Can you guess who might have mailed World Bible School lessons to 436 people in 40 countries of the world since this past September? The 11 middle and high school students pictured here did! They worked every Tuesday after school with happy hearts to send the Light of Christ around the world.

Pushpins on the map showed the nations that received the Good News this year through Jackson Christian students. Envelopes around the map represented lessons that were completed and returned.

Junior Hannah Harsy said, “World Bible School has taught me that you can help so many people hear and learn about the Word of God. It has been such a blessing, and I am so grateful to be a part of such an amazing organization! I have learned so much and I feel as though I have Student Workers: (L to R) Zach Shelton, Tate Myers, Katie Waldrup, Taylor Roberson, helped people.” Mia Morris, Lizzie Lecussan, Emma Gaskill, Eli Epperson, Katie Alexander, Weslyn Rowe, Hannah Harsy, Kathy Henton (sponsor) (Back row:) Andrew Pittman and Graham Scott This work was funded by donations from faculty, students and Jackson Christian friends.

For six months, 12 seniors, along with three faculty members, prepared for a weeklong trip to the Dominican Republic for mission work during spring break. It was exciting to plan skits for the Vacation Bible School lessons, learn about the tropical climate and spend time discussing our intentions with fellow group members. However, as spring break approached and my other friends were talking about their relaxing beach vacations, I was more wary about the trip I’d committed to. We boarded the plane headed for the Dominican for a week of minimal electricity, no hot water, no cell service and the unknown adventures that awaited us.

Over the course of the week, our group served in Bobita and Rio San Juan. Our “base camp” was in Bobita at Manna Christian School. Jerry Escue served as president of Jackson Christian from 1998 through 2005. The theme selected by Mr. Escue for his first year as school president was “Keep the Main Thing the Main Thing.” His main thing was leading students to love God. He wanted students to get to know Jesus Christ and develop a lifestyle that was consistent with His example. Escue embodied that lifestyle as a servant leader, constantly serving faculty and staff, as well as families of Jackson Christian. Throughout his tenure, he continually reminded the faculty and staff of this theme.

In 2005 Escue received the Vaughn D. Luster, Jr. Award from the National Christian School Association. This award is given to the president of a member school considered by his or her peers to best manifest the highest level of professionalism while leading a Christian school. To this day, he is called upon by NCSA schools to lead their coaching staff in professional development, as well as to assist schools in their capital campaign initiatives. His servant heart is reflected in the number of schools he has served without receiving any financial compensation. It is with a grateful heart that Jackson Christian named this gymnasium in honor of our friend, mentor and servant, Jerry B. Escue.

LEADER 2019 Jackson Christian Loses a True Servant

Larry McCulley served the Jackson Christian family for seven years as head of the maintenance department before retiring in 2017. Every time you asked Mr. Larry to do something, he always responded with a cheerful, “We’ll get’er done.” Larry passed away on February 11 at the age of 67 after a battle with cancer.

The first grade students at Jackson Christian planted an oak tree that overlooks the elementary and ELV in his memory. One of his favorite “jobs” was opening car door and greeting the students when they entered the building in the mornings. This tree symbolizes Mr. Larry still looking over the students. They also dedicated a chapel service to him.

Thank you, Mr. Larry! We will miss you.
