Timeline of Key Events in Last 2 Weeks of Prince's Life (1.05/2) A Minnesota doctor saw Prince twice in the month before his death — including the day before he died — and prescribed him medication, according to contents of a search warrant. Authorities are investigating what killed the musician. Some key events in the last two weeks of Prince's life: April 7 — Dr. Michael Schulenberg, a Minnesota primary care physician, sees Prince, according to the search warrant. Also, two Prince concerts in Atlanta are postponed. The artist said at the time he had fallen ill with the flu. April 14 — Prince performs makeup concerts in Atlanta, apologizing to fans. He jokes about having been "under the weather," giving a slight smile. His voice seems a bit weak at times while speaking, but sounds fine when singing during his 80-minute show. April 15 — Prince falls ill on a flight home from Atlanta, and the plane makes an emergency stop in Moline, Illinois. Authorities say DaRosa then drove to the Silver City Galleria mall and crashed a car through the front of a Macy's store. It's unclear which victims have died. Authorities say an off-duty law enforcement officer shot and killed the suspect. Witnesses reported a chaotic scene. 5 AP Explains: Why Brazilian President Faces Impeachment (0.01/2) Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff is facing possible impeachment by Congress, with the Senate expected to vote Wednesday on a measure to suspend her. The effort comes amid an angry public mood over the South American nation's worst recession in decades and a big bribery scandal at the state oil company Petrobras. Yet, it is not tied to either of those. The Associated Press explains what's behind the movement to oust her, and how it could play out: ——— WHAT IS ROUSSEFF ACCUSED OF DOING? She is accused of breaking fiscal laws by shifting around government funds to plug budget holes. Opposition parties say sleight of hand accounting allowed her to boost public spending to shore up support. Rousseff denies any wrongdoing, saying she didn't do anything that was not common practice in all prior administrations. She further argues that she isn't being charged with a crime, which should be the basis for any impeachment. ——— WHAT WAS THE FIRST STEP OF IMPEACHMENT? Last month, the Chamber of Deputies voted 367-137 to send the impeachment measure to the Senate. The overwhelming favorable vote added momentum to the impeachment push. The Senate had been seen as friendlier to Rousseff than the lower house and more likely to reject impeachment, but the lower chamber vote seemed to change that dynamic. ——— WHAT'S THE LATEST? If a simple majority of the 81 senators vote in favor Wednesday, and several counts by newspapers suggest that will happen, then Rousseff will be suspended and Vice President Michel Temer will take over. The Senate will then have 180 days to conduct a trial and vote whether to permanently remove Rousseff. If that happens, Temer would serve out her term, ending Dec. 31, 2018. ——— COULD ANYTHING STOP THE PROCESS? The government and opposition parties have filed appeals to Brazil's highest court on many aspects of the process, so the possibility exists that the court, or even individual justices, could intervene. On Monday, the lower house's acting Speaker Waldir Maranhao annulled the chamber's April vote in favor of impeachment, arguing there were irregularities and it had to be re-voted on. However, under pressure from his party, he did an about-face Tuesday and rescinded his annulment. ——— HOW DO ROUSSEFF'S SUPPORTERS AND DETRACTORS CHARACTERIZE THE SITUATION? Government supporters call the impeachment push a coup because Rousseff has not been charged with any crime. They say Brazil's traditional ruling class has been unnerved by the social movement under Rousseff's Worker's Party over more than a decade in power and is seizing the opportunity to take back power. Opponents say the administration's maneuvering of funds was illegal and an attempt to mask problems in Latin America's largest economy, such as huge budget gaps that have surfaced over the last year. They say impeachment can't be considered a coup because it's allowed in the constitution. 8 8 Comelec to Marcos camp: Show proof first to stop unofficial tally Show evidence first. That was the challenge of an official of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday to the camp of Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. when asked on her reaction on the request of the Marcos camp to suspend the unofficial vote count being conducted by the poll body and the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV). In an interview, Comelec commissioner Rowena Guanzon said that while the request of the Marcos camp is allowed under Republic Act 8436 or the Automated Election Law, she does not see any reason to suspend the unofficial tally—unless they could show proof of bad faith and inaccuracy. “Sa ngayon, ako, wala akong nakikitang dahilan unless ‘yung abogado ni Sen. Marcos ay may ebidensiya siya ng inaccuracy or bad faith. Maaari naman po silang magpetition sa en banc,” Guanzon said. READ: PPCRV: No stopping quick count despite Marcos plea The purpose of the unofficial count, Guanzon said, is to promote transparency in the electoral process. “We have to be transparent to the people kung ano na ‘yung status na ng botohan (about the status of the voting). Kasi kung itatago naman po natin, marami naman po ang magdududa. Baka [sabihin], may magic (If we conceal it, then many would have doubts. They might say there’s “magic” involved),” she said. She also said that the poll watchdogs, such as the PPCRV, are mandated to inform the public on the conduct of the elections. “Yung mga independent observers, yung mga official na election vanguards like Namfrel and PPCRV, may karapatan rin naman po sila na to inform the public kung ano na ang status ng eleksyon,” she said. (The independent observers, they are the official election vanguards like Namfrel and PPCRV, they also have the right to inform the public on the status of the elections.) Comelec chairman Andres Bautista confirmed that the en banc has not yet received a formal complaint from the Marcos camp. “We have not formally received any request,” Bautista told reporters in a separate interview. The camp of the senator said that they are requesting for the suspension of the unofficial tally so as not to sow “confusion and conflict” with the official poll results. “The unofficial count was designed not to be completed to avoid the possibility of confusion and conflict with the official one. There is no reason for this not to be the norm this time around,” Marcos’ campaign manager Rep. Jonathan dela Cruz said. Marcos is currently neck and neck with vice presidential race front-runner Maria Leonor Robredo who is leading with more than 200,000 votes. 10 Threat to behead Malaysian hostages of Abu Sayyaf looms again KOTA KINABALU — The threat of execution hangs over the four abducted Malaysian sailors after Abu Sayyaf militants in the southern Philippines set an “early” May deadline for talks to begin for their release. Anti-kidnapping activist Prof. Octavio Dinampo said killing captives appeared to be easier for the gunmen now, following the beheading of Malaysian Bernard Then in Nov. 17 last year and Canadian John Ridsdel on April 25 in Jolo island. READ: Malaysian hostage beheaded by Abu Sayyaf – report “They have no qualms about executing their hostages. They don’t have any conscience and are willing to carry out their brutal acts,” he told The Star on Wednesday. He added that the beheadings were not only carried out to pressure the families and governments of the remaining captives to negotiate for their release, but were also to get rid of those who were sick and ailing. Octavio said Philippine military operations had forced the militants and their captives to be on the move constantly in the mountainous interior of Jolo island. Hostages who were slow and weak were executed as a result. The four sailors – Sarawakians Wong Teck Kang, 31, Wong Hung Sing, 34, Wong Teck Chii, 29, and Johnny Lau Jung Hien, 21 – were abducted by Abu Sayyaf gunmen in the waters off Ligitan Island in Sabah on April 1. READ: Suspected Filipino militants kidnap 4 Malaysian boat crewmen They were part of a nine-member crew aboard a tugboat which was returning from the Philippines to Malaysia. The gunmen, in telephone calls to the victims’ families, reportedly set an early May deadline for them to begin negotiations for the hostages’ release. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said on May 4 that intelligence reports indicated that the four Malaysian captives had been treated well by the gunmen and were safe and healthy.

Smartmatic: PH now world reference point for automated elections Smartmatic, which provided the technology and vote counting machines used in the just concluded national elections, said on Tuesday that in only six years, the Philippines has become a world reference point for automation and well-run elections. In a statement, Antonio Mugica, the chief executive officer of Smartmatic, described the 2016 polls as ”a landmark with the largest ever manufacture and deployment of vote counting machines, making this a truly historic moment.” Mugica said the global election solutions company was proud to be part of the largest electronic vote counting project in history. “The Philippines has more than 54 million registered voters, is made up of over 7,000 islands and has one of the largest diaspora in the world. Without technology, votes would not have been processed so quickly and efficiently,” he said. The election on Monday (May 9) set records for size as the largest electronic vote count of its kind in history and for the speed of the tally, with 80 percent vote transmission rate just four hours after the polls closed, Mugica said. Using advanced election technology, results were registered, counted and published online in real time. The first votes were transmitted from 13 regions just one minute after the polls closed. Within two hours , 66 percent of the vote counting machines had transmitted results, compared with 17 percent in the 2010 election. “Leveraging technology and the committed effort of the society as a whole, we conducted a record-breaking election which delivered accurate, transparent and legitimate results and contributed to a historic turnout of 81.7 percent,” said Andres Bautista, chairman of the Commission on Elections (Comelec). In the months before the 2016 election, comprehensive audits, reviews and certifications were conducted to show that the system was fully prepared in terms of speed, reliability and security. On Monday , voters received paper copies of their ballots to validate that the system registered their votes correctly. “The level of transparency in this election is unrivalled,” Mugica said. “With the combination of Smartmatic’s solutions, the guidance of Comelec and the dedication of more than 270,000 Filipino poll workers, volunteers and operators, this election is a success,” Mugica said. More than 92,500 of Smartmatic’s vote-counting machines were deployed across 36,805 polling stations for the election. In addition, overseas voting in 18 countries was conducted with Smartmatic technology to process paper ballots.

14 7-Eleven PH chain nets P182M RETAILER Philippine Seven Corp. (PSC), the local licensee of 7-Eleven convenience stores, grew its net profit in the first quarter by 61.6 percent year-on-year to P182.4 million as election spending boosted sales. “The improved financial performance was within expectation as the company’s profitability is historically favorable during election years,” PSC reported to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Wednesday. Retail sales of all stores gained by 33.5 percent to P7.3 billion compared with same period last year. The increase in sales was attributed to the higher number of operating stores, which expanded by 23.4 percent or by 314 stores for the period. In addition, same-store sales went up by high- single digit during the period. Operating margin as a percent of revenue from merchandise sales improved to 4.1 percent from 3.7 percent, owing to higher sales volume during the first three months of the year. PSC opened 55 new stores and closed two during the quarter, ending the period with 1,655 stores. There are now 1,421 stores in Luzon, 189 in Visayas and 45 in Mindanao. “The company is set to attain another milestone this year in terms of total number of stores and profitability. While competition is likely to be more intense, PSC is the most capable to strengthen its position in the convenience store sector. It aims to capitalize on its first-mover advantage and intends to benefit from the capacity-building expenditures over the last three years,” the company said. For this year, PSC has set aside P3.5 billion in capital expenditures to support its store expansion strategy. Bulk of the budget is meant for new store opening, store renovation and equipment acquisition.

China Says US Patrols Justify Defensive Deployments Upping the ante in the feud over who is responsible for rising tensions in the South China Sea, China on Wednesday said repeated U. S. Navy patrols in the area are forcing it to boost the defense capabilities of the islands it controls and may require it to launch more air and sea patrols. In a strongly worded statement, the Defense Ministry said it deployed two navy fighter jets, one early warning aircraft and three ships to track and warn-off the destroyer USS William P. Lawrence as it passed nearby Fiery Cross Reef on Tuesday. "The provocative actions by American military ships and planes lay bare the U. S. designs to seek gain by creating chaos in the region and again testify to the total correctness and utter necessity of China's construction of defensive facilities on relevant islands," the ministry said. "China will increase the scope of sea and air patrols based on need, boost all categories of military capacity building, resolutely defend national sovereignty and security, and resolutely safeguard peace and stability in the South China Sea," the statement said. The U. S. destroyer's sail-by was the latest action by the U. S. Navy to reinforce its position that China's new man-made features in the strategically vital water body do not enjoy the legal rights of natural islands. Washington has said the Navy will sail and fly wherever permitted by international law and maintains there can be no limits on freedom of navigation as according to established practice. The William P. Lawrence's sail-by took it within 12 nautical miles (22 kilometers) of Fiery Cross Reef, the limit of what international law regards as an island's territorial sea. The reef is now an island with an airstrip, harbor and burgeoning above-ground infrastructure. China has added more than 1,200 hectares (3,000 acres) of land to its South China Sea island holdings by expanding existing islands or creating new ones by piling sand atop coral reefs. The addition of airstrips and military infrastructure has Washington and others worried that China is attempting to assert total dominance over the region's waters and airspace that are claimed in whole or in part by five other governments. China rejects accusations that it is responsible for raising tensions, saying actions by the U. S. Navy and the encouragement Washington offers to other claimants such as Vietnam and the Philippines are increasing the chances of conflict. An estimated $5 trillion in global trade passes annually through the South China Sea, which is home to rich fishing grounds and a potential wealth of undersea oil and gas deposits.

Artists Fight for Free Speech at a Cradle of US Independence A fight over free speech involving breakdance crews and bucket drummers is brewing on the steps of a historic meeting house where American colonists began the earliest calls for revolt against England. Boston officials say they're considering imposing regulations on street performers because the breakdancers and drummers performing in front of Faneuil Hall, among the city's most visited tourist sites, are using bad language, playing music too loudly, aggressively soliciting donations and bullying other performers out. "The behavior out there is unacceptable," said City Councilor Salvatore LaMattina, a Democrat who has proposed a citywide permitting system with support from public safety officials. "I just want them to respect the people that visit our city. You can't go out there and use foul language and blast music. " But breakdance crews and drummers, who for years have drawn crowds to the plaza around a statue of Samuel Adams, have disputed complaints about their behavior. They say police have been pushing them out of tourist destinations across the city but allowing them to perform at Faneuil Hall. "We're not the bullies. If anything, we're getting bullied by police and the city," Universal Fair, a member of the You Already Know crew, said between performances last week. "They say this is the only designated spot for us, and now they want to take that away from us. " Democratic Mayor Marty Walsh's office didn't comment this week on the breakdancers' complaints. Other opponents warn imposing a citywide system is an overreaction that could put a damper on a vibrant busking scene. Trying to control what artists say, even if it's considered distasteful, also infringes on free speech, a concern opponents say should have special resonance at Faneuil Hall, where Adams and other Sons of Liberty railed against British taxation, leading to the Boston Tea Party and other acts of rebellion. "You can't regulate an artist's content," said Stephen Baird, director of Community Arts Advocates, a nonprofit arts organization. "This is one of the most historic free-speech spaces in the country, and yet they're trying to make it a First Amendment-free zone. " City officials say a system that protects performers' constitutional rights but responsibly manages public space, especially around bustling Faneuil Hall, is overdue. William Joyce, who oversees security on city-owned property, said officers have tried to get the breakdance and drum acts to tone things down. He said there also have been complaints about marijuana, littering and crowds blocking access. Boston repealed its laws against street performers, some of which dated to the 1850s, in 2004, after they were challenged in federal court. But Faneuil Hall Marketplace, the privately operated shopping and dining complex adjacent to the meeting house, has long had a system for permitting acts, though performers staged protests last year when new fees and other changes were proposed. Other cities have seen recent battles over street performers, too. New York this year approved regulations aimed at restricting costumed characters and nearly naked painted women in Times Square and other pedestrian plazas to certain designated zones. Las Vegas did the same late last year along freewheeling Fremont Street. Joshua Rodriguez, who has been drumming on buckets around Boston for more than a decade, said he's concerned the current permitting and application proposal leaves too much discretion with city officials. He'd prefer a lottery system like those in place at Los Angeles' Venice Beach and Seattle's Pike Place Market, where artists are randomly designated performance spots and times. Boston resident Anthony Plant said he'd be open to seeing different acts get shots at working the plaza, which he crosses at least twice a week. But he's doesn't find anything particularly objectionable about their performances. "They've got jokes, but I don't have a problem with it. It's all in humor," Plant said. "They're just trying to draw a crowd. " But Femke Verbeck, a graduate student visiting from Belgium , said she wasn't sure the location was ideal for their acts. "It sort of disturbs the vibe," she said. "I'm here for the historic scene and everything. " ——— Follow Philip Marcelo at http://www. twitter .com/philmarcelo. 23 Why Ben Zobrist says streaking Cubs have even 'more in the tank' The Cubs have reached such lofty heights so quickly this season that the guys in the front office have started referring to the Cubs as being “in a tree.” “We’re going to stay up there as long as we can,” team president Theo Epstein said, “but we’re going to get down at some point.” After all, nobody can play .800 baseball for six months, right? Doesn’t happen. Never has. But exactly who will knock these guys out of their tree at this point is anybody’s guess – especially after the Cubs survived a late grand slam to beat the San Diego Padres 8-7 Tuesday night for their eighth consecutive victory. They pushed their best-in-109-years start to 19 games over .500 and their lead in the National League Central to 8 ½ games over the second-place Pirates. And they head to May 11 without so much as losing back-to-back games this season. “It’s all good vibes in here,” said shortstop Addison Russell, who doubled home a run in the second and tripled home two in the seventh. But for all of the “inventive” pitching by Jon Lester (4-1) on a night without his curve or cutter and all the hits coming these days from the torrid Ben Zobrist, Epstein’s point was made even on a day the Cubs improved the best record in baseball. Especially the way an easy-looking 8-3 game turned into a one-run nail-biter on the pinch-hit swing of Alex Dickerson off Adam Warren in the eighth. “We’re thrilled with the start that we’ve gotten off to, but we’re not blinded by it,” Epstein said. “We know we’re in a stretch right now where winning seems far easier than it actually is, and we know there’s going to be a stretch – probably a long stretch – this year where winning even one game seems virtually impossible. That’s just the nature of baseball.” Epstein’s front office remains on the lookout for roster help even as the Cubs continue the hottest start in the majors since the Detroit’s 1984 champs. “We still have vulnerabilities,” he said. “We still have areas we need to get better. We still have challenges and more adversity to come. And we almost look forward to it, because that’s when you find out what you’re made of more so than during the good stretches like the one we’re in right now.” Zobrist has been a big part of that stretch. The veteran second baseman followed his NL Player of the Week surge with a 4-for-4 Tuesday that included a pair of run-scoring hits. During the eight-game winning streak, Zobrist is 13-for-29 (.448) with 17 RBIs. “We’re excited, too,” he said “But it’s still early May, and we’ve just got to keep that in mind and remember every game is going to be tough, and we’ve got to battle every night.” At 25-6 it hasn’t looked very tough very often. “I think the time that we stop to have a pow-wow about it is probably the time that we start losing,” Zobrist said. “We just need to stay in the moment. The best things happen when you’re not over-thinking it.” Here’s the thing, though: Even Zobrist, the veteran with the World Series ring and realistic outlook, can’t explain exactly why the Cubs can’t keep this up, except for the length of the season and what history says about that. “I think we can definitely have some more streaks like this,” he said. “I don’t see that this is an aberration. I don’t see that this is something that we can’t continue to do in some way.” Case in point? Even on a night Lester said his curve ball “stunk” and cutter was “hit and miss,” he fought through with his fastball to get through six innings with a 6-3 lead. It was the 39 th consecutive regular-season game, dating to September, that a Cubs starter has pitched at least five innings – longest in franchise history since a 41-game streak in 1926-27. They’re also averaging a major-league-high 6.2 runs per game and are on pace to break the MLB record for drawing walks. “Obviously, we can’t stay this hot all year long; it’s just such a long season,” Zobrist said. “We know we’re going to have down points. But it’s our ability to pick each other up. …” He described the across-the-board contributions from all position areas, and the “super high” confidence that breeds. And then he remembered that some teammates actually haven’t started well, including the top acquisition of the off-season, Jason Heyward. “Gosh,” he said. “You just feel like there’s more. There’s more in the tank.” More? Somebody might want to text Lester or John Lackey to see if they’ve got an extra deer stand and maybe some beef jerky to send up to the guys in that tree. They might be up there for a while.

Romine Helps Tigers Top Nats 5-4 Despite Zimmerman's 2 HRs This much seemed clear: No one — on the Detroit Tigers or the Washington Nationals — was completely sure whether the tiebreaking run would be allowed or an automatic double play would be called based on the new slide rule. As it turned out, this one went the Tigers' way, helping them end a seven-game losing streak. Andrew Romine drove in a pivotal run on a play that withstood a replay challenge, Miguel Cabrera tacked on a pinch-hit RBI right afterward, and Detroit overcame Ryan Zimmerman's two homers to beat Washington 5-4 on Tuesday night. "It was 50-50," Romine said. "Me and (Tigers first base coach Omar Vizquel) and (Nationals first baseman Zimmerman) were standing at first, kind of going, 'I have no idea. Nobody knows what the call is going to be.' We were just kind of guessing really. " The Tigers trailed 3-2 before scoring three runs in the sixth off Joe Ross (3-2). After James McCann's RBI single tied it, Romine came up with the bases loaded and one out. His grounder led to a forceout at second base, but Romine beat shortstop Danny Espinosa's throw to first in a bid for a double play. Because Anthony Gose's slide was not near the bag at second, Washington hoped Romine would be called out on review, based on this season's rule governing how a baserunner must slide. But Gose did not make contact with Espinosa, and the play stood as called on the field. "The way our luck has been going with the replay recently, I had one finger crossed in my back pocket," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said. "The rule says it has to alter the play or have an effect on the play, and it didn't seem to have an effect on the turn of the double play. " Nationals manager Dusty Baker said he was not aware that for the automatic double play to be invoked, the runner must not only fail to slide to — and stay on — the bag at second, but he also must hinder the throw to first base, which Gose was judged not to have done. Nationals second baseman Daniel Murphy — who fielded Romine's grounder and tossed the ball to Espinosa, and also was involved in the Chase Utley play during last year's postseason that resulted in the rule change — said of Tuesday's play: "I think everybody saw the replay, and with the rules that we've been given by Major League Baseball, I thought it was warranted as an illegal slide. " Given the way things have been going for his team lately, Ausmus was asked whether the outcome of that particular play was the sort of break the Tigers needed. "It helped," Ausmus said. "I did tell Gose: 'Don't ever slide like that again.'" Cabrera then produced a bloop single to add an insurance run and make it 5-3. There were, to be sure, other pivotal moments in this game. For example, Bryce Harper came up as the potential go-ahead run in the ninth, but right-handed closer Francisco Rodriguez intentionally walked the lefty-hitting, reigning NL MVP to put two men on with one out for righty-hitting cleanup batter Zimmerman, he of a two-run shot in the fifth off Michael Fulmer (2-1) and a solo shot in the seventh off reliever Drew VerHagen. "I just felt better righty-on-righty at that point," Ausmus explained. It worked. Rodriguez struck out Zimmerman swinging, then got Murphy to fly out for his eighth save. In the eighth, with Alex Wilson pitching for Detroit, pinch-hitter Clint Robinson — who ended Monday's game with a homer in the bottom of the ninth — hit a double. Wilson Ramos tried to score from first but was thrown out at home on a relay from center fielder Gose to shortstop Romine to catcher McCann. "That was a heck of a relay. That ball was way the heck out there. They had to make two perfect relay throws to the plate. You've got to give them credit," Baker said. "You can't blame my third base coach. I'll take that one for not pinch-running for him. " COLLECTING HITS Tigers 1B Victor Martinez hit four singles. ... Tigers 3B Nick Castellano hit a two-run homer for the second night in a row. This one came off Ross, the only qualified starting pitcher in the majors to not have allowed a homer this season. UP NEXT Former teammates and current friends, Nationals RHP Max Scherzer (3-2, 4.60 ERA) will face Tigers RHP Jordan Zimmermann (5-1, 1.10 ERA) in Wednesday's series finale.

West Point Says No Punishment for 16 Cadets' Raised-Fist Photo Sixteen black West Point cadets who posed with raised fists for a pre- graduation picture that sparked debates on race and proper behavior in uniform won't be punished for the gesture, the U. S. Military Academy said Tuesday. The decision, less than two weeks before the 16 female seniors are poised to graduate, found they didn't violate military rules limiting political activity. An internal inquiry found the cadets didn't plan to make a political statement, West Point's superintendent, Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen Jr., said in a letter to the student body. But, he said, they showed "a lapse of awareness in how symbols and gestures can be misinterpreted and cause division," and they will receive instruction to address "their intent versus the impact of the photo. " The fists-up image, which circulated online, led some observers to question whether the women were expressing support for the Black Lives Matter movement, which grew out of protests over police killings of unarmed black men. But the inquiry found the picture, among several the women made in keeping with an informal campus tradition, captured a spur-of-the-moment gesture intended to demonstrate unity and pride in graduating, Caslen wrote. Groups of cadets often take Old Corps pictures in traditional dress uniforms to echo historical portraits. A raised fist has symbolized political resistance for generations, from Nelson Mandela upon his release from prison in 1990 to Democratic Vermont U. S. Sen. Bernie Sanders on the presidential campaign trail this year. It was used by black power advocates in the 1960s, including by two American sprinters during a medal ceremony at the 1968 Mexico City Olympic Games, and more recently by activists for the Black Lives Matter movement. Some observers suggested the women were improperly identifying with the movement while in uniform. Defenders said the women were simply celebrating their forthcoming graduation, something closer in spirit to a team lifting helmets to celebrate a win or Beyonce raising her fist at this year's Super Bowl halftime show. "Their frame of reference is: 'Right now, we're getting ready to graduate in three weeks. I'm standing here with my sisters,'" said Mary Tobin, a 2003 West Point graduate and mentor who spoke to the students after the photo was taken in late April and to some of their relieved relatives Tuesday. Some critics of West Point's inquiry said the black women, who represent less than 2 percent of the graduating class, were being held to a different standard than other cadets. "Will there ever be a time when black women can unapologetically show that they are strong proud and supportive of one another without their action being interpreted as an act of militant defiance? " Essence magazine editor-in-chief Vanessa De Luca asked in a Wall Street Journal op-ed this week. Indeed, Caslen noted that other cadets have used clenched fists to show support for a team or pride at serving their country. So did he, along with hundreds of West Point staffers and graduates on the night before last year's Army-Navy football game, he added. The decision was politically fraught for West Point, which has been making a push to increase the number of women in the Long Gray Line. About 80 percent of cadets are men and about 70 percent are white. In all, there are 18 black women among the roughly 1,000 seniors on track to graduate May 21. ——— Associated Press writer Michael Hill in Albany contributed to this report.

US-Afghan Raid Rescues Abducted Son of Former Pakistan PM U. S. and Afghan forces conducting a raid Tuesday against Islamic militants unexpectedly found and rescued the son of a former Pakistani prime minister who had been abducted three years ago, officials said. Ali Haider Gilani, believed to be about 30, was discovered in good health during the raid near Afghanistan's eastern with Pakistan. The operation killed four of the extremists, the officials said. Gilani is the son of Pakistan's former Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani, who celebrated the rescue with his family. His secular anti-Taliban Pakistan People's Party's led several major offensives against Islamic militants. Afghan National Security Adviser Mohammad Hanif Atmar told Pakistan's foreign affairs adviser, Sartaj Aziz, about the raid in a telephone call, the Pakistan Foreign Ministry said. Gilani was being taken to the Pakistani Embassy in Kabul, although officials there said he had not yet arrived, according to Zafar Hashemi, a spokesman for Afghan President Ashraf Ghani . The raid took place in the Gayan district of Paktika province, Hashemi told The Associated Press. It was conducted under the authority of the U. S. anti-terrorist mission in Afghanistan, Operation Freedom's Sentinel, according to the U. S. military in Afghanistan. "Four enemy combatants were killed as a result of the operation. No other injuries or damage was observed or reported," the U. S. statement said. The counterterrorism mission was "planned and launched after evidence of terrorist activity was confirmed," it added. A spokesman for Afghanistan's National Security Council , Tawad Ghorzang, told reporters in Kabul that the rescue took place during an ongoing operation against al-Qaida and other militants. The operation was not specifically seeking Gilani, but came across him as it was being carried out, Ghorzang said. Gilani was in good health and "will soon be handed through diplomatic channels to Pakistan," he added. U. S. Army Brig. Gen. Charles Cleveland, spokesman for U. S. forces in Afghanistan, said Gilani was flown by helicopter to Bagram Air Field, 45 kilometers (about 30 miles) from Kabul, where he underwent medical checks. "We think he is in good health," he said. The purpose of the operation "was to go after al-Qaida-related targets in the area, and there was an indication that there may have been a hostage being held with them," Cleveland said. "So it was a nice surprise to get that. " Gilani had been held in a compound occupied in the Gayan district by al-Qaida operatives, he said, though the "rescue happened outside the compound. " "He (Gilani) was the sole noncombatant. He didn't fight back, so we picked him up," he said. U. S. forces would return Gilani to Pakistan once medical checks and other procedures at Bagram were completed, he said. The Pakistani government was expected to send a plane to Kabul to collect him, Cleveland added. U. S. Secretary of Defense Ash Carter praised the rescue. "This raid demonstrates the growing capabilities and effectiveness of the Afghan security forces and is an excellent example of the strong security and intelligence partnership between Afghan and U. S. forces," Carter said in a statement. "Working alongside our Afghan partners, we will continue to make it clear that there is no safe haven for terrorists in Afghanistan. " The elder Gilani, who served as prime minister from 2008 to 2012, said last year that the kidnappers demanded the release of several al-Qaida prisoners in exchange for his son. He also said that the captors had let his son talk to him by phone for eight minutes, and that he was being held somewhere in Afghanistan. Gunmen kidnapped the younger Gilani in May 2013, several days before the general elections in his central Pakistani hometown of Multan. There was no claim of responsibility for the abduction, but suspicion immediately fell on the Taliban. The Pakistani Taliban fought the state for over a decade, killing tens of thousands of people in a bid to install their own harsh Islamic system. Ghorzang said the U. S.-Afghan raid targeted al-Qaida and other militants. The fact that Gilani was found inside Afghanistan — quite far from where he was abducted in Pakistan — indicated he might have changed hands between militant groups. The former captive's brother, Abdul Qadi Gilani, praised Afghan authorities and Pakistan army chief Gen. Raheel Sharif for the rescue, adding that Sharif had called their father about it. A jubilant elder Gilani was seen on Pakistani TV attending an election rally after hearing the news. "This is a very good day for me," the father said. "I am very happy and I have no words to express my joy," added the brother, Abdul Qadir Gilani. Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif expressed pleasure over the rescue, while the current leader of the People's Party, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, said on Twitter the Afghan ambassador in Islamabad had called the elder Gilani to tell him about his son. ——— Shahzad reported from Islamabad. Associated Press writers Munir Ahmed in Islamabad, and Rahim Faiez and Amir Shah in Kabul, Afghanistan, contributed to this report. ——— This story has been corrected to show that the elder Gilani served as prime minister from 2008 to 2012, not 2013. 2016-05-11 12:01 By abcnews.go.com

PCB begins efforts to get UK visa for Mohammad Aamir Karachi: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is preparing a special case in a bid to secure a visa for left-arm pacer Mohammad Aamir to travel with the national team to England this summer. Mohammad Aamir According to PCB sources, Chairman Shaharyar Khan and other high-ups have held consultations with their legal advisors and are also in touch with the England and Wales Cricket Board and British High Commission over the matter. "The board is very keen to ensure that Aamir gets a visa to travel to England for the full series but they are aware of the hurdles in the way of this happening due to the strict immigration laws of the United Kingdom," one source said. Under the UK's immigration laws a person who has been convicted and served time in a UK jail or been deported cannot be issued a visa atleast until 10 years after his sentencing. "The board has given up hope on trying to get visas for Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif but are hopeful that given Aamir's background in the spot-fixing case and his age when it happened in 2010 they can get some relaxation for him," the source said. Butt, Asif and Aamir were all found guilty of spot fixing during the fourth test against England at Lords in August, 2010 and later banned for a minimum of five-years by the International Cricket Council. Since the crime took place in the UK the trio were later also tried in a crown court and served varying times in jail before returning to Pakistan. But Aamir because of his age got a relaxation in his ban from the ICC to resume playing cricket before the ban expired last September but the same was not given to Butt and Asif. The source said that the PCB had to file visa applications for the England on May 12 and all documentation was ready but in all probability a separate case to secure a visa for Aamir would be filed by the board. "They are in touch with the ECB which has assured them support if required since they also have a lenient view on Aamir since he was the first to confess to his crime and also cooperated with the authorities," another source said. Aamir has been included in the training camp being set up for the tour to England which does not include Asif or Butt who was the Pakistan captain when the spot-fixing scandal took place in England.

We gained self belief after 2014 Asiad gold: VR Raghunath Bengaluru: Ace drag-flicker VR Raghunath said the self belief which they had gained after winning the gold medal at the 2014 Asian Games was responsible for the Indian men's hockey team's constant rise at the world stage in the recent years. "Ever since the Asian Games Gold in 2014, the team has started to believe in itself again. We never wanted to come down from that stage and only wanted to climb up. We had a ranking of 12-13 before 2014 but recently we were placed No.6 and currently we are ranked No.7 in the world," Raghunath said in the lead up to the Champions Trophy in London. "No opponent takes us lightly anymore and they talk about us as a team that does well in knockouts. I believe we have a bright chance and we are moving in the right direction for the upcoming tournaments," added the 27-year-old defender. He is one of the senior most players in the team, but Raghunath said one can't get complacent. "Nobody can take their place in the Indian team for granted, you have to constantly prove yourself. Anyone who performs well will be in the squad and personally for me, I would like to test myself against big teams like Australia, Germany and Netherlands in the upcoming tournaments and analyse my performance," he said. "The priority will be to convert maximum penalty corners so that my team is in a comfortable spot in the first two quarters," he added. Commenting on the ongoing preparations for Rio Olympics at SAI centre here, Raghunath said: "I feel we are best prepared than ever before for a big tournament, be it physically, mentally or even psychologically. 35 Old is gold: Young Pakistan players struggle to prove fitness, veteran stars shine Karachi: Some of the top Pakistani cricketers, including national T20 captain Sarfraz Ahmed and Umar Akmal, have failed to meet the required fitness standards, set by trainer Grant Luden. Other players who failed to attain the required points in the different fitness tests include Sohaib Maqsood, spinners Saeed Ajmal and Zulfiqar Babar along with some others. But Pakistan Test captain Misbah-ul-Haq also joined the tests on Tuesday after returning from performing Umra and interestingly he and senior batsman, Younis Khan are said to be the two fittest players in the program despite their age. Misbah ul Haq and Younis Khan. Younis is said to have topped with 18 points at the age of 38 while Misbah turns 42 this month. "The fitness trainer of the Pakistan team, Grant Luden and his team have devised a points system for the fitness tests with 17 set as the benchmark for players to confirm their fitness is of required level," one PCB official said. "Unfortunately some players could not reach the benchmark," he added. He explained the tests are being held as contracted players are given goals to achieve within three months - those who fail to achieve the goals are fined, while those who achieve or surpass them are rewarded financially. Interestingly the four-day fitness tests which began last Sunday at the national cricket academy have been hit by reports in the media that some players were unhappy over the alleged double standards employed by Luden and his team. Some players reportedly have complained to the Board that Luden and his team were soft with some players notably national ODI captain Azhar Ali, pacer Wahab Riaz while taking the tests and put others through harsh tests in adverse weather conditions. But the official termed the allegations as baseless. He said since the players were taking tests in groups the allegations were baseless. The Board has also employed a sports psychologist and nutritionist Asad Rizvi to hold counseling sessions with the players in the fitness tests and these will also continue in the month long boot camp in Abbotabad that begins this week. Senior players Shahid Afridi and Muhammad Hafeez along with the unfit Haris Sohail, Emmad Wasim have not appeared in the tests since they are carrying niggling injuries.

Ready to fight for my Euro 2016 place: Wayne Rooney London: Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is facing the biggest fight of his 13 year international career to hold onto his England place going into the European Championships. Man United's Wayne Rooney gestures during the EPL match vs Norwich City at Carrow Road in Norwich on Sunday. Pic/Getty Images England's talisman ever since he burst onto the scene as a preternaturally gifted 18-year-old at Euro 2004, Rooney has gone to five major tournaments as one of the first names on the team-sheet. But competition from emerging stars such as Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy, coupled with doubts about his own form and fitness, mean that England's all-time record goal-scorer is no longer an automatic pick. "As I've said throughout my career with Manchester United and England, I never take my place for granted," Rooney said. 'Want to win trophies' "First of all I want England to be successful and win trophies, and obviously it is great if I can be a part of that. " The current campaign has already been a historic one for Rooney, who broke Bobby Charlton's 35-year-old England scoring record in October and now has 51 international goals to his name. He has also moved onto 109 caps, behind only Peter Shilton (125), David Beckham (115) and Steven Gerrard (114) in England's all-time ranking. But he has performed fitfully for United and saw a brief return to form abruptly curtailed in February when he was sidelined by a knee injury. In his absence, England recorded a rousing 3- 2 win over world champions Germany in Berlin. Dele Alli and Ross Barkley have encroached onto Rooney's territory as chief creator and there are also doubts about his ability to press with the same intensity as his younger rivals. No more a force While Rooney remains one of the world's most famous players, he is no longer the game- changing force of nature. With United, who he joined from Everton in 2004, he has won almost everything, including five Premier League titles, two League Cups and the 2008 Champions League. He is also the club's second-highest goal scorer and has Charlton's United record of 249 goals in his sights. His goals include some unforgettable strikes, including a stunning overhead kick against Manchester City in 2011. But with Kane and Vardy the new darlings of the English game, the former Boy Wonder must prove in France that his best days in an England shirt are not behind him.

FIFA chief 'very sad' over Michel Platini's resignation Mexico City: FIFA president Gianni Infantino voiced sadness on Monday after his former mentor Michel Platini decided to resign as UEFA chief after his appeal against a football ban was rejected by sports tribunal. Gianni Infantino Infantino, speaking to reporters after a FIFA Council meeting in Mexico City, said that, as chief of football's governing body, he must "respect the decision" by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). "On a personal level, of course I'm very sad about this decision. I've worked with Michel for the last nine years," said Infantino, who was Platini's number two at UEFA before he became FIFA president in February. We did some great things in UEFA together and I really want to keep these positive memories. " The court reduced Platini's suspension from six years to four, saying the penalty initially imposed by FIFA's ethics committee was "too severe. " Former UEFA chief Michel Platini But the court said it was "not convinced" that the $2 million payment Platini received from FIFA in 2011 was legitimate. World football's disgraced ex-president Sepp Blatter had ordered the payment. Platini, once the frontrunner to succeed Blatter as the most powerful man in the sport, said after the ruling he had no choice but to resign and would keep fighting in Swiss courts to prove his "probity. 40 Japanese artist can keep 'vagina' kayak, but can't share it Tokyo: On Tuesday, a Japanese court ruled a floating replica of artist Megumi Igarashi’s vagina was in fact “pop art.” However, it also ruled that 3D data enabling supporters to create their own oversized vagina was not. Japanese artist Megumi Igarashi. PIC/AFP “Genitals are not obscene at least for lots of woman including myself so I think it doesn’t make sense,” she told CNN. Igarashi created controversy in 2014 by her plans to create a kayak in the shape of her vagina. She launched a crowd-funding campaign to raise money to build it, then emailed her supporters with the 3D data so they could make their own. Fined by court The court cleared Igarashi of charges of obscenity over her bright yellow kayak, but fined her 400,000 yen (Rs 2,44,206), for electronically providing data to allow people to print their own. After the ruling, Igarashi defended her work and said that, technically, 3D data was not real so it shouldn’t be categorized as obscene. “I think it is not ‘sexual stimulus’ like pornography that we see in many aspects in Japan,” she said. Dissappointed “I work to reverse the male notion that female sex can only be understood through the prism of obscenity. I’m disappointed this concept hasn’t been understood by the judge,” Igarashi said.

How England's Euro 2016 squad was 'leaked' online London: A supposed 'leak' of England's Euro 2016 football squad appeared online on Monday. England coach Roy Hodgson. File pic A screenshot appeared on Twitter purporting to be a press release naming Roy Hodgson's 23- man squad three days prior to the official announcement. Press Association Sport understands the Football Association regards the post as a hoax and declined to make a formal response, though that did not stop fans having their say. The appearance of Luke Shaw, absent for the last six months with a broken leg, and Jack Wilshere, who has played only twice this season, proved particularly provocative — as did the relegation of Tottenham pair Kyle Walker and Danny Rose to the standby list. But a closer inspection of the text suggested it should be taken with a large pinch of salt. Hodgson will reveal his selections on Thursday.

Abalos not guilty of graft in NBN-ZTE deal MANILA - The Sandiganbayan has acquitted former Commission on Elections Chairman Benjamin Abalos from his graft charge over the NBN-ZTE deal. The anti-graft court Fourth Division said there is no strong evidence showing that Abalos brokered the national broadband network (NBN) project with China in exchange for a commission. Prosecutors had alleged that Abalos introduced China’s ZTE Corp. officials to then Finance Secretary Margarito Teves, and received "acts of generosity and hospitality" from a corporation that eventually bagged a $329-million contract with the government. The graft case stemmed from allegations by whistleblower Rodolfo Lozada Jr., who served as technical adviser on the project. Lozada accused Abalos of wanting to secure $130 million as commission for the project. The whistleblower also said the $329-million contract was overpriced by $67 million, based on the $262 million evaluation he made. Co-accused in the case is former President Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo, who allegedly approved the deal despite knowing its irregularities. Arroyo was also accused of having lunch and playing golf with ZTE officials while their proposal was still being assessed by government. READ: 'GMA, Abalos, JDV were waiting for NBN-ZTE commissions' The former president later dropped the project which would have connected all government agencies through a broadband network. -- With a report from Dennis Datu, dzMM

Simona Halep brings Madrid confidence to Roman clay Rome: Madrid champion Simona Halep hopes to trade further on her Spanish success this week in Rome, with the sixth seed confirming on Tuesday her confidence is high for the WTA Italian Open. Simona Halep. Pic/AFP Halep owns two semi-finals at the Foro Italico, with losses to Carla Suarez Navarro a year ago and to Serena Williams in 2013. But Romania's top player is currently bursting with confidence after beating Dominika Cibulkova for the Madrid title on clay at the weekend. Halep has turned her season prospects around after a poor start to 2016. "I didn't play the same at the beginning of the year, it was a tough period for me as I started the year a bit sick. I couldn't train like I do now. "But I came back very strong, in my opinion, and played good tennis in Madrid. I have more confidence - I believe in my game. "I've started to work much more than before, so I'm all good. I feel good. The most important thing: I don't have injuries. I'm able to practise, I'm able to play matches. "That makes me feel more confident on court. " Halep played the 2014 Roland Garros final but lost in a second-round disappointment at the ensuing edition. She is hoping to change that scenario in a few weeks in Paris through continued hard work. "It's tough to stay at the top, but now I'm used to being there, I've been almost three years to be in the top 10. "But I have to keep working every day the same. It's different tennis. I have to get used to it. I just need few days. "I have to play and to get better on these conditions, because they are similar to the French Open. " In the women's first round, ninth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russian beat France's Caroline Garcia 7-5, 6-4 while unseeded former Wimbledon finalist Eugenie Bouchard advanced over Serbia's former number one Jelena Jankovic 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Briton Johanna Konta put out Sweden's Johanna Larsson 6-1, 6-2. On the men's side, Czech eighth seed Tomas Berdych booked the first of the third-round spots through his defeat of Spaniard Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-3, 6-4. In the first round, there were wins for Nicolas Mahut of France and German Philipp Kohlschreiber.

The government, however, remained defiant, with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley yesterday asserting in the Rajya Sabha that the ‘Prime Minister is entitled to speak on corruption’ both inside and outside the House and he cannot be ‘gagged’. His statement came after Congress member Shantaram Naik said he has given notice for breach of privilege against Modi and Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar over the PM’s remarks at an election rally on the AgustaWestland issue. Naik contended that ‘lies’ had been told outside the House about UPA leaders taking money in the chopper deal. Jaitley, who is the Leader of the House, retorted, “Since when has an election speech by one politician against another outside the House started to be construed as breach of privilege?” He further said that political speech outside by one politician against another is for ‘publicity’ like the Congress members have been doing yesterday.

Donald proposes, Sadiq Khan disposes 'Will exempt Sadiq Khan from Muslim ban' Washington: Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump has said as US President he would make an exception for London's first Muslim mayor Sadiq Khan in his proposed temporary ban on the entry of Muslims to the US. You’re welcome, Khan: Donald Trump "I was happy to see that. I think it's a very good thing, and I hope he does a very good job because frankly that would be very, very good," Trump told The New York Times when asked about Khan. Khan, who has been critical of Trump's policies, had earlier said he would not be able to travel to the US if the 69-year-old tycoon was elected as the president. But Trump stated otherwise, "There will always be exceptions," he said. "Because I think if he does a great job, it will really – you lead by example, always lead by example. If he does a good job and frankly if he does a great job, that would be a terrific thing," Trump said. 'Won't be ignorant Trump's exception' London: London's first Muslim Mayor Sadiq Khan yesterday hit out at Donald Trump for signalling that he would exempt him from his proposed temporary ban on Muslims entering the US. No thanks, Trump: Sadiq Khan Pics/AFP "This isn't just about me. It's about my friends, my family and everyone who comes from a background similar to mine, anywhere in the world," Khan said in his rebuttal. "Trump's ignorant view of Islam could make both our countries less safe; it risks alienating mainstream Muslims around the world and plays into the hands of the extremists. " "Donald Trump and those around him think that western liberal values are incompatible with mainstream Islam [but] London has proved him wrong," the 44-year-old added. Khan also said he is supporting Hillary Clinton in her bid for the White House: "I hope she trounces him (Trump). " 2016-05-11 10:46 By Agencies www.mid-day.com

The double signings show Bayern's intent to win the Champions League title. Neither Dortmund nor Bayern said how much the Hummels transfer cost, but German media put the fee at 38 million euros. 56 World's oldest axe found in Western Australia Perth: A tiny stone flake found in Western Australia is a remnant of the earliest known axe with a handle, archaeologists have claimed. The discovery pushes back the technological advance to between 45,000 to 49,000 years ago, and coincides with the arrival of people in Australia, ABC Australia reported on Wednesday. The fragment is 10,000 years older than the previous oldest known fragments found in northern Australia in 2010. Although much older "hand axes", usually made of flint, have been found across Europe and Africa - one well-known example found on a Norfolk beach is thought to be 700,000 years old - those were very different tools. Archaeologists said the original axe would have been hafted - meaning it was made with a handle attached. Professor Sue O'Connor, who discovered the fragment, said the world's oldest known examples of hafted axes were all found in Australia. "In Japan such axes (also) appear about 35,000 years ago. But in most countries in the world they arrive with agriculture after 10,000 years ago," O'Connor, from the Australian National University School of Culture, History and Language, said. She found the thumbnail-sized fragment in the early 1990s at Carpenters Gap - a large rock shelter in Winjana Gorge National Park - one of the first sites in Australia known to be occupied by modern humans. In 2014, while O'Connor was re-examining the objects dug out of the site, she identified a possible polished axe fragment and approached professor Peter Hiscock of the University of Sydney to help verify the find. The axe fragment was found in the same layer of sediment as a charcoal sample that was radiocarbon dated to 48,875-43,941 years old. Professor Hiscock said these early innovations helped create cultural differences between groups. "(The axe) is perhaps a material signal of cultural variations in the ancestors of Aboriginal people," he said. The findings appeared in the journal Australian Archaeology.

Pic/AFP Democrats also voted on Tuesday in a presidential "beauty contest" in Nebraska, although the delegates from that state were all previously assigned during a March 5 caucus. In that contest, Sanders won 15 pledged delegates, compared to 10 for Clinton. "With this outcome, we now have won primaries and caucuses in 19 states," Sanders said in a statement. "We are in this campaign to win the Democratic nomination and we're going to stay in the race until the last vote is cast. " Republican presumptive nominee Donald Trump, whose last remaining competitors exited the race after Trump's victory in Indiana last week, also won in West Virginia on Tuesday, easily. Trump also rolled to victory in Nebraska, where 36 delegates were at stake. According to analysts, Sanders, long viewed as the front runner to win in the Mountain State, benefited from Clinton's mis-steps when speaking about the coal industry in mining-heavy West Virginia. While Clinton had proposed programmes to help coal workers laid off due to a changing energy industry, she was haunted by her statement during a CNN town hall in March that "we're going to put a lot of coal miners and coal companies out of business". So far, Sanders has clinched a total of 1,467 votes while Clinton is still leading the Democrat race with 2,238.

Because in this period we play some very important series and either he will reshape the way we play our cricket or decide to bid goodbye," Akhtar said. 64 Harvested liver zips to Pune from Nashik in 3 hours, thanks to green corridor Pune: A 49-year-old man suffering from a chronic liver disease was given a new lease of life after the liver of a 55-year-old woman was transplanted in him at a Pune hospital. The liver being brought to Pune’s Sahyadri Hospital A green corridor between Nashik and Pune made this feat possible. The arrangement reduced the travel time to three hours from the usual six. The liver donor was admitted in Sahyadri Hospital in Nashik on May 7 for hypertensive intracranial bleeding. Since she did not respond to the treatment, she was declared brain dead on May 9. The hospital team then counselled the relatives of the woman for organ donation. The relatives readily agreed. The liver was then made ready for transport. Last morning, the liver was harvested and taken via the green corridor from Nashik at 11.30 am. It reached the Sahyadri Hospital in Pune at around 3.06 pm. Dr. Prashantha Rao, Liver Transplant Surgeon of Sahyadri Hospital said, “The decision by brain dead patient’s family to donate her liver to a needy patient is worth appreciating.” Since Sahyadri Hospital in Nashik is not an official centre for organ retrieval, the donor was transferred to an official organ retrieval centre in Nashik. The liver was allocated to Sahyadri Hospital in Pune, according to ZTCC rules and regulations. The hospital’s liver transplant team immediately travelled to Nashik to carry out the organ retrieval procedure. Coordinated efforts Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) (Pune city) Sarang Awhad said, “As per the requirement, a green corridor was created between Nashik and Sahyadri Hospital for unhindered transportation of the liver. The distance of 210 km was covered in just three hours and 25 minutes. The green corridor was a result of the planned and coordinated efforts of the traffic division between the two districts.” Dr Alapini Thopte, Manager operations Sahyadri Hospital said, “Usually, it takes more than six hours to travel from Nashik to Pune by road, thanks to the green corridor this transportation was achieved in just three hours. ZTCC coordinator Aarti Gokhale was instrumental in coordinating the corridor.”

Israel honors priest who promotes Arab army enlistment NAZARETH, Israel (AP) - Israel’s decision to honor a controversial Greek Orthodox priest at its official Independence Day ceremony is driving a wedge in the country’s tiny Christian Arab community as the government recognizes him for his efforts to encourage Christians to enlist in the Israeli military. Father Gabriel Naddaf’s recruitment drive has deeply divided Israel’s Christian Arabs, who make up just 2 percent of Israel’s population. His inclusion in a ceremony tinged with sadness for many of the country’s Arabs, along with new allegations accusing him of sexually harassing young people he helped, has only added to the anger and risks overshadowing what is meant to be a national celebration. Naddaf has denied the charges, aired on a TV station this week, and the government said there are no plans to remove him from Wednesday night’s festivities, where he will be one of 14 torch lighters chosen for their outstanding contributions to the country. Since 2012, Naddaf has led recruitment drives in Christian communities, preaching about the need to enlist more Christians into Israel’s military, which is compulsory for most Jews but voluntary for Arabs. He says it would better integrate them into a society where they often face discrimination. “I will light the torch with great pride for the glory of the state of Israel and for the good of the Christians in Israel,” Naddaf, 43, told The Associated Press on the sidelines of rehearsals for Wednesday’s ceremony. He said the timing of the media report signaled “intentions to harm me personally and to also harm the lighting of the torch.” Israel’s Arabs make up a fifth of the country’s population of 8 million. Although they hold citizenship rights, many identify with their Palestinian brethren in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. They also tend to view army service - a rite of passage for Israeli Jews - as taboo, in part because of Israel’s military occupation of lands the Palestinians want for a future state. Members of the Druze and Bedouin Arab minorities often do serve. Naddaf’s enlistment drive, coupled with his calls to Christians to shed the labels of Arab and Palestinian and adopt an Israeli character, has set off an emotional identity debate among Christian Arabs. Opponents say the campaign’s real goal is to divide and weaken Israel’s nearly 1.8 million Arabs, who include Muslims, Christians and Druze. “When Gabriel Naddaf stands on stage during Independence Day in Jerusalem, he will light the torch in the name of Gabriel Naddaf and not in the name of the Christian Palestinians inside the Israeli state,” said Azmi Hakim, an Orthodox Christian activist in the Arab city of Nazareth. “We are part and parcel of the Palestinian people and … we don’t celebrate Independence Day.” Naddaf, whose own sons have enlisted in the military, says his activism has triggered threats to his life. Arab legislators are among his most virulent opponents. “He is a person who sold his soul for the good of the regime he serves,” said Basel Ghattas, a Christian Arab lawmaker. In a new blow to Naddaf, Channel 2 TV aired an investigative report on Sunday in which anonymous people, whose voices were disguised, made claims of sexual harassment against Naddaf. They also claimed he had sought bribes for helping Palestinians obtain Israeli permits. Naddaf dismissed the claims as an “evil plot” by jealous enemies. “God will punish these people for harming me, my wife and my two sons who are serving now in the military,” Naddaf wrote on Facebook. But Shadi Halul, a former associate who had a falling out with Naddaf, said the allegations were too serious to dismiss. “As long as there is concern, even 1 percent, that it’s really true, then I ask that (his invitation) to light the torch be suspended,” he told Army Radio. Israel’s Culture Minister Miri Regev said unless Naddaf was proven guilty, he would light the torch. Police spokeswoman Luba Samri said some of the allegations would be investigated. She declined to elaborate. At the ceremony on Wednesday, Naddaf will light a torch, deliver a brief statement and intone the traditional phrase, “for the glory of the State of Israel.” Story Continues →

The Big Read: From Russia, without love Red Notice — How I became Putin’s No.1 Enemy by Bill Browder has, as the title suggests, nothing to do with South Africa. But in many ways it is a cautionary tale that every freedom-loving local should turn to as a reminder of what happens when the rule of law is replaced by the rule of men. Perhaps President Jacob Zuma’s affection for Russia’s authoritarian president and his nuclear goodies is another reason to read this incredibly scary real-life thriller. But should Madonsela pick up a copy, she might have sleepless nights. She will be disconcerted to discover that, when the rule of law is upended by those in power, innocent people in high positions get bumped off to hide the massive abuses done to the taxpayer . A report in the latest Sunday Times revealed that Madonsela is “living in fear for her life” since she received credible information that she was the target of a “revenge hit” and that R740,000 had been paid to kill her by way of a motor car “accident”. On the same weekend, Madonsela was harshly criticised by Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini, a convicted criminal in 2006 (she pleaded guilty to fraud involving an amount of R254,000), for “politicising” her office. Well, since the job of the public protector is to investigate politicians this is, at best, bizarre question-begging. At worst, it suggests something more sinister and plays into a much darker narrative. State players in this drama include the State Security Agency, which is still investigating whether Madonsela is a “spy ”, and the egregious runaway cook-cumdeputy defence minister Kebby Maphatsoe who has already declared that she is in the pay of the CIA. This noxious brew relates directly to the far worse tale told in breathtaking detail by Browder in his lid-lifting story of the dark arts practised by Putin and his apparatchiks against his enemies. Browder started off life with all the attributes needed to make a fortune in Russia, which he duly did. And for 10 years until 2006, his fund — Hermitage Capital Management — was the largest foreign investor in the country and he personally pocketed north of £300-million in the process. In the freewheeling capitalism and mass privatisation that marked Moscow ’s entrance into the global market after the fall of communism in 1990, Browder had three things on his side. First, he inherited what we would term “struggle credentials”. American-born Browder’s grandfather Earl was the leader of the US Communist Party and contested elections under its banner for the American presidency in the 1930s. Though his goal was to be an arch capitalist, Earl had left him with a name that was greatly respected in Communist circles. Second, he inherited both his father’s rebellious nature and his smarts (the elder Browder was a mathematical genius). Third, he understood markets, and, with a Stanford MBA and a background in banking he could read with accuracy, almost alone among his peers, that assets in Russian companies were vastly undervalued and were going for a song. He went to live in Moscow, put his intuition into practice and hit pay dirt. But, in 2007, after butting heads with Putin’s cronies in the companies in which he was heavily invested, it all went wrong. Because Putin and his circle effectively controlled the police, the judiciary and the tax authorities, it was relatively easy for this vast apparatus to hit Browder hard. He and his company were accused of acting for foreign agencies, being spies, and for committing “crimes against the state”. Hermitage and Browder became victims of what he terms “state corporate raiding”: about $230million paid by his companies in taxes was effectively stolen by state officials and Browder was arrested at the airport and banned from Russia. But, when he tried to enforce his rights, the real trouble began. After his lawyers’ offices were raided, he persuaded all his legal advisers and other company officials to leave Russia for the safety of London. One of them, a young tax lawyer Sergei Magnitsky, whom Browder describes as “the bravest man I’ve ever known” refused to flee. He declared his faith in the legal system. Magnitsky was arrested on trumped-up charges and placed in the most horrific conditions of detention. Though he fell severely ill, the authorities refused him all medical treatment and were determined to turn him against Browder. He told his tormentors “I’m here because I’ve exposed [how $230million was] stolen by law enforcement officials.” On November 16 2009, he was beaten to death in his cell by eight guards in riot gear, while he was handcuffed to a bedrail. The state then concocted a fantastic cover-up story until the truth seeped out. This single horrifying event and the incredible steps leading up to it are the focus of the book. It also converted multimillionaire Browder into a human-rights crusader. His achievement in persuading the US Congress and European Parliament to enact legislation targeting the state conspirators who effectively murdered Magnitsky is every bit as enthralling as the state-sponsored theft and cover-ups revealed in the book. Before you breathe a sigh of relief and say it couldn’t happen here or correctly infer that “state capture” in South Africa as it currently stands is an amateur affair compared to Russia, think again. The rule of law here and everywhere is a fragile instrument. It is capable of capture anywhere by ruthless politicians determined to use the state and its resources for personal gain rather than community upliftment. We obviously do not know who is behind the alleged hit ordered on the public protector. It might be the stuff of fantasy by an unreliable whistle-blower. Or, as Lord Denning, the former top judicial officer in Britain once remarked, you might think that “the arm of coincidence is long but it does not stretch unto infinity”. Liberty and the freedom of the individual against the will of the most powerful is one of the key instruments of our own constitution whose enactment 20 years ago we marked on the weekend. Worth reminding ourselves, then, of its oft-quoted price: eternal vigilance.

Rohan Chaubal (31), who passed away on Sunday due to blood clots in his brain, will continue to live on. After he was declared brain dead, Rohan’s family decided to donate his organs in the hope that it will help save lives. Rohan Chaubal was admitted to the Sushrusha Hospital in Dadar on May 3, after he suddenly collapsed Rohan was admitted to Sushrusha Hospital in Dadar on May 3 after he suddenly collapsed. Post the incident his left side was paralysed. His wife Gauri Chaubal recalls, “When we took him to the hospital, we found out after several tests that he had blood clots in the right side of his brain. The clots continued to increase with time. As a result, his brain was affected and he slipped into a coma in the next 2-3 days. The doctors were quite transparent with us and kept giving us updates. At one point, they told us that there is no hope left.” No hope It was then that the doctors put forth the option of organ donation and asked the Chaubals to decide. “He was on a ventilator. His blood pressure was in control, but we knew there was no hope as he was not breathing on his own,” Gauri said. When doctors told the Chaubals about organ donation, it was made clear that since Rohan is brain dead and his organs can be donated because they are in a good condition. Gauri, who is a media professional, added, “By the end of it, he was on ventilator. It was for us to decide, after doctors clearly told us there was no chance of him recovering from this condition. It had not struck to me till doctors told us about the option of organ donation. We made a quick decision because it could help save lives and it is also a way for him to live on, through his organs. His father has been very supportive in taking this decision.” Felt good “We had two options — either taking him off the ventilator and taking the body home for cremation, or keeping the ventilator on and preserving his organs to donate them and then take the body home. We chose the second option. It felt good,” said Gauri. The decision was taken on Sunday morning. It took one and half day for the entire process to complete and Rohan’s body was then cremated yesterday afternoon.

Wildlife officials tag walleye in Buffalo Bill reservoir POWELL, Wyo. (AP) - The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is catching, tagging and returning hundreds of walleye in Buffalo Bill Reservoir to determine if suppressing the unwanted fish is feasible. Five Game and Fish employees worked west of Buffalo Bill Dam, the Powell Tribune reported (http://bit.ly/24LFnvb). Only a light breeze ruffles the surface of the lake, but falling snow accentuates a soggy night for the men in two boats doing very wet work. A portable generator provides electricity for the booms’ electrical arrays they lower into the shallow water where the walleye spawn. The arrays send a jolt of electricity to stun the fish. Then the guys net the dazed walleye near the surface to deposit them in a live well. If they haven’t been tagged before, each fish receives two tags that resemble short, wire antennas jutting from their sides. Five hundred of the tags will offer either a $10 or $100 reward. “Here’s one of the bigger females,” said Jason Burckhardt, Game and Fish Department fisheries biologist with a walleye that would tickle any angler. It weighed 2.58 pounds. Next, Burckhardt notes a tagged male of smaller proportions, but worth its weight in gold with a $100 tag. Sean Cooley, Game and Fish fisheries technician, determines each walleye’s sex and size and then inserts the tags before returning them to the lake. “Looks like seven recaps,” Cooley said. They call them “recaps” or recaptures; walleye previously caught and tagged. The higher the recapture rate, the less variance in the abundance estimate, said Daniel Kaus, Montana State University-Bozeman graduate student working on the project so he can build a walleye population model. The guys wear protective gear to avoid being shocked. They tag at night because the walleye are easier to catch where they are spawning, Burckhardt said. They launch at dark, sometimes remaining on the lake until 3 a.m. The walleye bounty is to encourage fishermen to report the tagged walleye they catch whether it is a reward fish or not. The more anglers report their marked walleye, the more accurate the mortality estimate will be, Burckhardt said. The purpose of the tagging program is to determine a means to suppress the walleye population. By catching, tagging and then releasing the walleye, they can estimate walleye mortality when anglers report the tagged fish they caught, Burckhardt said. It’s called mark and recapture to estimate a population’s size. A portion of the population is captured, marked and released. Later, another portion is captured and the number of tagged walleye within the sample is counted. Since the number of marked walleye within the second sample should be proportional to the number of marked individuals in the whole population, an estimate of the total population can be calculated by dividing the number of marked walleye by the proportion of marked walleye in the second sample. For example, if Game and Fish tag and release 100 walleye and 50 tagged fish are caught by anglers, they can assume that is half the population and further deduct that the population totals 200 walleye, Burckhardt said. 71 Vijay Mallya cannot be deported as per British laws, UK tells India New Delhi: Britain has told India that it cannot deport Vijay Mallya, who is facing money laundering charges in the country, but could consider an extradition request for him. Vijay Mallya. Pic/PTI The UK government's response came nearly a fortnight after India made a request for the deportation of Mallya, whose Indian passport was revoked in a bid to secure his presence for investigations against him under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act 2002. There is also a non-bailable warrant issued against Mallya. "The UK government has informed us that under the 1971 Immigration Act, the UK does not require an individual to hold a valid passport in order to remain in the UK if they have extant leave to remain as long as their passport was valid when leave to remain or enter the UK was conferred. "At the same time the UK acknowledges the seriousness of the allegations and is keen to assist the Government of India. They have asked GoI to consider requesting mutual legal assistance or extradition," MEA spokesperson Vikas Swarup said. The extradition can happen under the 1993 treaty or any other necessary assistance under the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) signed in 1992 between India and the U. K. However, India was hoping to get the liquor baron, who is facing arrest over allegations of defaulting bank loans of over Rs 9,400 crore, through the expeditious route of deportation and not go through the lengthy process of extradition.

Racism is out here, dancing on our set Acclaimed actress Florence Masebe, who plays the character Naledi on the telenovela, yesterday broadcast her outrage on Twitter. Her first tweet was: "Shall I tweet about the horrible incident that we've just experienced on set? " Next came: "'I can speak to you any way I like because I'm white'. This is what a crew member just said to our director, who is a black man. "Racism is out here dancing on our set. " Mzansi Magic and the production company Penguin Films said last night they "strongly condemn any acts of discrimination and encourage a fair working environment based on mutual respect". "An investigation is being undertaken and appropriate steps will be taken to ensure that the situation is resolved. " Twitter users quickly weighed in on Masebe's tweets, with one asking whether the perpetrator was still part of the production crew, to which Masebe responded: "Yes. " Another user asked whether the white person in question had shown remorse, with Masebe replying: "She's not sorry". Although Masebe has been vocal on Twitter about some details of the incident she declined to comment when she was later approached by TMG Entertainment. This is the latest incident in which race has reared its ugly head on the set of a locally produced television soapie. In March, actress Mbali Mlotshwa complained on Instagram about the racial slurs that followed her character, Nandi, being involved with the white character, Bernard, played by Werner Coetser. She said: "Bernard and Nandi received some racist slurs from their on-screen debut this past week, (production expected it and so did I) but the crazy thing is racial slurs happened on set with people I thought were educated and open-minded. The executive director of a religious coalition that has worked with the mayor’s office on the proposal says applicants would be required to show some identification to get a card. Margaret Fox, of the Metropolitan Area Religious Coalition of Cincinnati, says those who can’t afford the $15 cost of a card could receive financial assistance. Fox says she is optimistic the cards will be approved. Fox and city officials say the photo IDs would help immigrants and others feel more a part of the community.

3 sports journalists in Abu Dhabi convicted of slander DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) - Prosecutors in the United Arab Emirates say three sports journalists have been convicted of slander over comments they made on a television program. The state-run WAM news agency cited the office of Abu Dhabi’s public prosecutor in a report on Tuesday night about the convictions. It didn’t name those charged. A statement from prosecutors says the journalists received suspended sentences and that a lawsuit against them seeking 201,000 dirhams ($55,000) in damages would go on. The case involved the three making comments about a contract involving an unnamed company. WAM reported that the journalists maintain their innocence, saying their comments touched on public opinion and did not include swear words. While liberal compared to other Mideast countries, the UAE has harsh laws governing expression and conduct on social media.

US appeals court to hear Maryland gun-control case RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Maryland’s ban on assault weapons and large-capacity gun magazines is back before a federal appeals court. A three-judge panel of the 4th U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond raised concerns about the constitutionality of the restrictions in February. The panel sent a lawsuit challenging those provisions back to a judge who upheld them and ordered her to take another look using a more rigorous legal standard. The state appealed that 2-1 decision to the full 15-member appeals court, which will hear arguments Wednesday. Maryland lawmakers passed the sweeping Firearms Safety Act after the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Connecticut. Gun-rights advocates went along with most of the law but challenged the provision banning 45 assault weapons and the 10-round limit on gun magazines.

Switzerland of Africa: Little Rwanda has risen The tiny, landlocked, mountainous nation's economy has outperformed those of almost all its continental peers, with yearly growth averaging 7.8% since 2000. Like Switzerland, which hosts the World Economic Forum in Davos every year, Rwanda is about to welcome delegates to the organisation's annual African gathering. "Nurturing an attractive business environment has become more important for many African nations to sustain growth, as commodity revenue and aid have fallen," Mark Bohlund, Africa economist with Bloomberg Intelligence in London, said. "Rwanda has led the way by cutting red tape, providing tax incentives and improving governance, which has helped overcome the disadvantages of its small size, lack of port access and limited natural resources. " However, the Swiss parallel of its economic success story, furthered with a ranking by the World Bank as mainland Africa's easiest nation in which to do business, does not extend to its reputation for upholding democracy. Civil rights groups accuse the government of stifling opposition and have criticised a constitutional change that will allow President Paul Kagame, who has been in power since 2000 and taken credit for Rwanda's economic success, to stand for a third term. Kagame's administration has built the tourism industry into the country's biggest foreign exchange earner by hosting events such as the World Economic Forum and the African Development Bank's 2014 annual meeting, and by luring visitors to see mountain gorillas and climb volcanoes. It has also boosted agricultural output and manufacturing by improving roads and the electricity supply. Rwanda's experiences are high on the forum's agenda, which will focus on how African countries can harness technology to spur growth. "The slump in energy and commodity prices has demonstrated the urgent need for greater diversification and entrepreneurship across Africa," said the forum's head for Africa, Elsie Kanza. Rwanda "stands as a good example of how long-term planning and savvy investing can lead to sustainable and inclusive growth". Foreign direct investment in Rwanda would probably rise 36% this year to $1.5-billion, the nation's development board said in April. Although global economic recovery was taking longer than expected, and the slowdown in China was limiting growth for commodity-based economies, Rwanda had decided to focus on marketing itself as a conference destination to support growth, Finance Minister Claver Gatete said in the capital, Kigali yesterday.

Medical Entrance Exam: Parents launch last-ditch effort against SC verdict A day after the Supreme Court made the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) mandatory as the only gateway for admission to a medical programme, parents of medical aspirants from across the state have decided to write to President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to protest. Students have got just two months to prepare for NEET phase II, which will be conducted in July. Representation pic Since the verdict cancelled the Mahrashtra Common Entrance Test (MH-CET), which many students attempted on May 5, students are under a lot of stress. They had prepared for the exam for two years and now they have got just two months to prepare for NEET phase II, which will be conducted in July. To make a last-ditch effort, parents from across Maharashtra are trying to gather support from all over the country in writing a letter to the President and the Prime Minister, asking them to review the situation. Nayan Verma, a physics teacher associated with a medical entrance coaching institute, said, “Parents are leaving no stone unturned in getting the state exempted from NEET this year. Parents from states other than Maharashta are equally stressed and everybody is trying to come together through a signature campaign and a letter that will be sent to the PM and the President.” He added, “It is very interesting to know that the Supreme Court is willing to let dance bars run, but has no mercy on lakhs of children aspiring for medical seats and are struggling after the court’s decision.”

We must stop this vandalism - our leaders don't dare Yesterday members of the community of Grabouw, near Cape Town, took to the streets to protest about lack of service and access to land. Their protest is permissible under our constitution. They have access to the authorities with whom they can raise their concerns. But it seems, as have so many other communities in our country, that they have lost trust in government institutions. Yesterday, they burned down the local traffic department offices as they demanded that the government listen to their grievances. Last week, the community of Vuwani, in Limpopo, burned several schools after a court made the unpopular ruling that the area be incorporated into another municipality. As the burning of public infrastructure continues, we ask South Africans: "When are we going to protect what is ours from being destroyed? " These buildings belong to us and were built for us. What is troubling is that no one in our leadership is willing to speak the truth to our people about the way in which they go about protesting. Every time there is violence, our leaders are either missing or they misread the mood of the people. We condemn any form of violence and can never justify the burning down of public property to express our grievances. The government should preach a new gospel to our communities and impress upon them that all the infrastructure in their communities belongs to them. We are past the days when it was "us against them". If we fail to deal with this culture of destruction and vandalism, we will be pumping money into a black hole. The government and its assets belong to us, the people. Let's protect our gains and our property.

Trump and Zuma: worlds apart but bound by patriarchy and sexism Trump, a white man, is the Republican presumptive nominee in the US presidential race as “leader of the free world”. Zuma, a black man, is the embattled President of the African National Congress-led government in South Africa, clinging to power in an emerging, developing democracy. The trajectory of the two men through political power structures in their respective countries cannot be more dissimilar. Trump is the privileged, university-educated billionaire entrepreneur. Zuma is the “ man of the people ”, rising from poverty and struggle politics through the ranks of the ANC with little formal education. These men, seemingly poles apart, have something distinct in common. They are both prominent patriarchs with populist support. They share a value system based on male supremacy, power and entitlement that has historically, and still continues, to subjugate, oppress, violate and exploit women globally. These men demonstrate that patriarchy transcends race, ethnicity, class, culture and geopolitics. Its persistence in the US, one of the most advanced, democratised nations in the world, may appear paradoxical. But patriarchy, like all forms of structural violence, is insidious and invisible. It is historic, deeply entrenched and institutionalised in social, cultural and religious mores and practices. Patriarchy succinctly summarised , This means that both men and women perpetuate patriarchal power structures, but men are obviously the main beneficiaries of this system. The sexist backlash The global backlash against women when they are perceived to be gaining ground, asserting themselves or “cracking the glass ceiling” is well documented . Trump, the modern, elitist patriarch, has a history of heaping vicious sexist scorn and humiliation on women. He insulted his Republican rivals, including Carly Fiorina’s looks, and humiliated presidential rival Ted Cruz’s wife. After his recent campaign wins he used the classic, sexist “divide and rule” strategy. He said Hillary Clinton, his rival Democrat front-runner, was playing the “ woman card ” and has nothing else going for her. There has also been a huge outcry at his gaffe against women who have abortions. Zuma, the tribalist, traditionalist patriarch, has a similar history of misogyny. At his 2006 rape trial, which ended with an acquittal , his sexist defence was that, as a Zulu male, he was obliged to satisfy a woman. Supporters cheer as Republican U. S. presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks during a campaign rally in Lynden, Washington, U. S., May 7, 2016. Image: REUTERS JIM URQUHART The South African Commission for Gender Equality has censored Zuma for saying the nation’s “daughters” become a societal problem when they do not marry. He was recently accused by the opposition Democratic Alliance of “ outrageously sexist ” and offensive remarks. This, after he said he would like to compliment women more but can’t as it is perceived as harassment in modern times. He added that women were missing out on “ good men and marriage ”. Complicity of women The endurance and resilience of patriarchy in modern societies is not determined or sustained solely by men’s actions, but by women’s actions too. Trump’s campaign success, although decidedly skewed towards the Republican men’s vote, clearly indicates that he has also won the women’s vote. Republican women voters downplay his misogyny, seemingly more concerned with endorsing his xenophobic, racist and anti- immigration policies. Like Trump, polygamist Zuma has the support of the ANC Women’s League , historically the most powerful women’s lobby in South Africa. This group, which earned sterling credentials in the fight against apartheid, has remained largely silent on the sexist controversies surrounding Zuma. Until just recently it had not even countenanced having a woman president. Waiting in the wings in both the US and South Africa are two women touted to be the next presidents of their respective countries. Clinton , running against Trump, is strongly tipped to win the Democratic nomination for the presidential race. If successful she could be the first US woman president, ending a 227-year male legacy. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma , who will be finishing her term as Chairperson of the African Union Commission in July, is tipped to succeed Jacob Zuma, her former husband. She could be the first woman to lead the governing African National Congress in its 104-year history. Ironically, Clinton and Dlamini-Zuma, respectively, will be the wife and ex-wife of former presidents in their respective countries. Will women presidents make a difference? Women presidents are perceived as crucial for pushing an agenda of women’s rights and freedoms. But the pressures and constraints of the presidential office mean that the heightened expectations for them overcoming patriarchal dominance may not be realised. It remains to be seen, therefore, whether both Clinton and Dlamini-Zuma, if they do become presidents, will buck the trend and leave a feminist mark in their legacies. A global groundswell by women, and especially students, may be the impetus needed for society to finally engage with the global scourge of patriarchal dominance and violence. If elected, Clinton would have to contend with increasing feminist militancy among women at US Ivy League universities and colleges against against a culture of rape, sexual violence and sexism. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Image: Simphiwe Nkwali / Sunday Times In South Africa, a similar fight against patriarchal dominance and violence appears to be emerging from women students in the #FeesMustFall movement. They too are calling out men on sexual assault, a culture of rape and what they perceive as increasingly exclusionary, dominant male discourses in the mass social movement for deep transformation. These movements echo the militant suffragette movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Violent, militant pressure from women in the United Kingdom signalled a profound change in patriarchal power dynamics – and got women the vote. The overwhelming scrutiny and attention Trump and Zuma receive in their respective countries relates more to their political rhetoric on issues of national and economic security. It is the yardstick they are measured by, rather than their misogyny. The scathing condemnation against them has little to do with their stance on women’s issues, and their blatant sexism. This illustrates the insidious persistence of patriarchal power structures in the developed and developing world. And both men and women globally perpetuate male dominance by endorsing populist patriarchs and by not holding them to account on women’s issues. - Lyn Snodgrass , Associate Professor and Head of Department of Political and Conflict Studies, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University This article first appeared on The Conversation.

Climate change will starve poor The scarcity of fruit and vegetables will be the biggest killer. A model developed at Oxford University and published in The Lancet projects that, by 2050, climate change will lead to a 3% per person reduction in global food availability, a 4% reduction in the consumption of fruit and vegetables, and a 1% reduction in the consumption of red meat. Lead researcher Marco Springmann said climate change was expected to reduce the amount of food harvested, "which could lead to higher food prices and reduced consumption, and to an increase in malnourished people. "The only possible solution is the adoption of climate stabilisation pathways, which could reduce the number of deaths by up to 79%. Without those strategies, however, the death of over half a million people is inevitable. " Already many South Africans face food insecurity, according to the Centre of Excellence in Food Security at the University of Stellenbosch, and climate change exacerbates existing vulnerabilities. The centre's food security expert, Stephen Devereux, said: "Food insecurity is not caused by a lack of food at national level, but by a lack of access to food at the individual level, mainly due to poverty. "One response to food insecurity is social protection, which improves access to food for the poor, either by giving them food or by raising their income. " Despite South Africa's extensive social protection system, food insecurity and malnutrition are prevalent, with an estimated 25% of South Africans being food insecure. According to Gina Ziervogel, of the University of Cape Town's African Climate and Development Initiative, the effects of climate change in agriculture will be most severe on crops of staples, such as maize, and on forestry. "Another worry is that certain pests and pathogens will benefit from the changing climate and will become more of a problem for agriculture," Ziervogel said. 2016-05-11 10:09 TANYA FARBER www.timeslive.co.za

HIV treatment expanded to accommodate all HIV-positive people Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi announced this yesterday during his budget speech to parliament. The national Treasury has allocated an extra R1-billion to the budget for antiretrovirals. The move was welcomed by experts, who say it will help prevent people getting "lost" between diagnosis and starting treatment when their CD4 count drops to 500 - often years after infection. Salim Karim, director of the Centre for the Aids Programme of Research, said the move resulted from "compelling" evidence that it was better to start treatment for HIV-positive people earlier. A five-year study of more than 4200 people in 35 countries showed those who were treated earlier had 50% less chance of having an Aids- related or unrelated disease. The trial was so convincing it was stopped early as it became unethical to deny participants access to treatment. Karim said early treatment would reduce the number of new infections because people on ARVsare not infectious. But of the 6.4million people in South Africa who were HIV-positive, not all will take the treatment, especially men. Karim said: "Almost all women have multiple interactions with the healthcare service for contraception, antenatal care and childbirth; men who interact with the health service are largely restricted to those requiring care for illness and or injury. " He said there was a disproportionately lower ARV coverage in men. Motsoaledi said a new South African-designed HIV and TB app, which provides treatment guidelines for health workers, had been downloaded 150,000 times. The app allows health workers to complain directly to the national Health Department if there is a medicines shortage. Motsoaledi said from next month an ombudsman would be in place, who would act as a "public protector" of health and take up complaints from unhappy patients.

1 of area’s last quilting clubs clings to tradition GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) - Quilting used to be the social activity for women. They would get together in clubs that dotted the community and create quilts for their children, loved ones, friends and those in need. In 1921, the Savageton Home Builders started a club of quilters, but they were just another small club in a Gillette community full of them. Current club president Verna Ann Gilbertz said it was just the social standard at the time, the Gillette News Record reported (http://bit.ly/1r6fV1c). “At one time, there were 20 (quilting) clubs in town. It was the thing in the community when it was probably not possible to come into Gillette for social activities,” she said. “There were clubs scattered all over and it was the social backbone of the rural community. But they’ve all kind of died out.” Now, the Savageton Home Builders is one of the only remaining quilting clubs that herald back to those early days. And it’s something Gilbertz and the other 10 or 11 members have become proud of. “We’re pretty proud of our group,” Gilbertz said. “We’re active in the community.” Normally, the group will put out between eight and 10 quilts a year through the 25 years Gilbertz has been a part of the group. That adds up to between 200 and 250 quilts over that quarter decade. But this past year, the annual output has tripled. Sitting in Gilbertz’s living room are 24 quilts, each taking around eight hours to do from start to finish. First, the quilters have to sew the pieces together, which takes about five hours to do. Then they have to put them together with the padding and then sew them together, which each take another hour apiece. Finally, the tying of the quilts takes another hour to finish. For Gilbertz, it was a family tradition that she still embraces and wants to preserve. She has been involved one way or another for 55 years. “It was partly because my two grandmothers, my mother and my two aunts did it. I used to live out on Highway 50 until just a few years ago when I moved into town,” she said. “Then, the men would come and have lunch with us, where it was a full-fledged meal. The University of Wyoming started a program to teach rural ladies how to do all kinds of things. It was an educational-type thing.” Gilbertz was laid up for much of the winter with a bad hip, so it gave her a lot of time to work on quilts. She estimates she quilted between 12 and 13 during the winter. “Now I just need to get them out of my house,” she said. Historically, the Savageton Home Builders hasn’t been a for-profit organization. The quilts aren’t normally sold for money. They are made for those in need, organizations and children within the community. Gilbertz wants to keep that tradition alive as well. The 24 quilts made during this past year will be donated to different charities. She plans to donate some to the Boys and Girls Club of Campbell County, the Children’s Center, CASA, the Women’s Resource Center and Pioneer Manor, along with any other organization they can find that may need a quilt. The quilting clubs of old are mostly died out, being replaced by YouTube vloggers and do-it- yourself website tips. But Gilbertz stubbornly will not allow her club to go the way of all the rest. It’s a tradition. Story Continues →

They are quick and hungry,” he said. “Stars have made some changes, with Bradley Carnell coming in as an assistant to the Italian coach [Giovanni Solinas]. They have turned the season around and they are in the [Nedbank Cup] semis. “They are not fighting relegation like they did in the past two seasons I was there. 89 Mumbai: Youths assault police constable with his lathi Three youths have been arrested for allegedly assaulting a police constable near Shivaji Park in the wee hours of Tuesday. The constable sustained injuries near his left eye and got six stitches. Constable Ganpat Chauhan According to the police, Constable Ganpat Chauhan (53), who was on night patrolling duty, spotted three youths having a heated argument with a taxi driver near the petrol pump at Sena Bhavan chowk in the wee hours of Tuesday. “He went to the spot and was told by the taxi driver that the three were kicking his taxi as he refused to ply them to Parel. When Chauhan asked the three to calm down they started yelling at him and later started assaulting him,” said a police officer from the Shivaji Park police station. The officer added that one of them hit Chauhan on his face with his lathi. The three then escaped on a motorcycle. The taxi driver too fled from the scene. Chauhan called up the control room and a police van rushed him to the KEM hospital. Chauhan got six stitches near his left eye. Police lodged an offence against the three unknown people and launched a manhunt. On checking the CCTVs installed nearby they found that the number plate of the motorcycle had been captured in one camera. Following this, the three accused, Akshay Ansurkar (19), Aniket Ansurkar (23) and Santikesh Rathod (18) were arrested later in the evening. The three, all residents of Prabhadevi, were reportedly under the influence of alcohol, the police said.

Once upon a time in English football... If you want the latest football fairytale, look no further than Grimsby Town and Forest Green Rovers. Grimsby Town are at least familiar; Rovers not. Both inhabit the National League of English football. On Sunday, one of them will emerge from the cellars of the English game onto at least the ground floor of the Football League. It will be a huge leap. In English football, which has 140 leagues and 480 divisions, the super rich play in the Premier League and the upper classes in the Championship, League One and League Two. The latter is the destination for Rovers or Grimsby Town next season. The promotion play-off final takes place at Wembley on Sunday. For Grimsby it will be the first of two trips to the home of English football on successive Sundays. They play in the final of the FA Trophy (an FA Cup for non-league clubs) at Wembley on May 22 against National League rivals Halifax. My knowledge of English football is limited, but it would be surprising if something like this has happened to a single club before: two Sundays in a row at Wembley. Grimsby are favourites to win next week, but not this Sunday. Forest Green Rovers finished second in the National League, having matched champions Cheltenham for most of the season. They ended second in the league, eight points ahead of third-placed Braintree, a working men's team known as Iron. Forest Green Rovers are the real fairytale. Unlike Grimsby, they have never been to Wembley before and come from the smallest town that will ever be represented in the Football League should they win promotion on Sunday. According to the most recent British census (2011), Rovers' home town of Nailsworth in Gloucestershire has only 5794 people. They would fit almost 16 times into the 90000-capacity Wembley. Grimsby, whose home town of Cleethorpes is a sort of Pommy Fish Hoek, with a population of 40000, have a long history of playing at Wembley, their last visit having been last year when they lost to Bristol Rovers on penalties in the play-off final. In five previous visits to Wembley, Grimsby lost three times, in 2006, 2008 and 2013, but won the League Trophy and Football League Second Division play-off final there in 1998, four weeks apart. They beat current Premier League club Bournemouth in the League Trophy final, then Northampton Town in the League Two play-off final. Those were heady days under Grimsby's most successful manager, Alan Buckley, who is now in charge of the club's under-17 squad. Grimsby once had as a manager a bloke called Bill Shankly, but quickly got rid of him (or he them, for he had some success later with another club). Grimsby's route to the promotion play-off also has its charm. They finished fourth in the league and needed to play off against third-placed Braintree, while Rovers took on fifth-placed Dover United, winning 2-1 on aggregate. Grimsby lost 1-0 at home in the first leg, then won 2-0 at Braintree on Sunday, with goals by Omar Bogle and Padraig Almond, their leading scorer. Before this season, Grimsby had reached the play-offs for four consecutive years after being relegated from the Football League in 2010. This is only the second time they have made it to the final. Andrea Bocelli won't be singing at Wembley on Sunday and the world won't be gushing, but the fairytale of English football still has two weeks to run.

R99 scams face big fines In a R99 scam, a small amount of money is deducted from an account. The amounts are so small that no SMS or e-mail notifications are sent to the consumer. But now those who try to employ the scam could face huge fines under new initiatives. The Payments Association of South Africa plans to introduce a system whereby a statistical sample of a suspected fraudulent database is taken. Pasa CEO Walter Volker explained that if, for example, 80% of the sample is found to be made up of unmandated debit orders, the fine will relate to 80% of the database. “The fine is R1,000 per unmandated debit order,” he said. Thus, a database with a million orders, of which 80% are unmandated, will mean a fine of R800,000. “At the moment we are developing a scientific basis so that it will stand up in court,” said Volker. Volker said though these types of fraud had increased, it was not known what the extent of such operations were. Banks have long allowed dodgy debits to slide. According to Volker, criminals are focusing on non-authenticated early debit orders, of which there are about 14 million transactions a month. Of these, 7% to 8% are disputed, and 18% are unpaid due to a lack of funds. This is above accepted industry limits. Other initiatives include plans to close loopholes in non-authenticated early debit orders. By October Pasa’s plan is to introduce its Authenticated Collections Project. Through it banks will send consumers an electronic confirmation that they are in the process of doing business with a company. Records of these transactions will also be kept. But while banks are waiting for new systems to be put in place, the onus is on customers to sort out the problem. Victim Tshwarelo Mmako was given the number of the company that was debiting her account, and told to sort it out with it. Another victim was told to open another account. The manager told her that the bank was the “middleman” in the transaction. “It is fraud, but not in the bank’s eyes because it is a debit order and not a purchase,” the manager said. Banks, when approached by The Times, said that they had introduced stop and reverse debit orders and said that customers would have their money refunded.

Newest Virginia high court justice to be sworn in this month RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Court of Appeals Judge Stephen McCullough will be sworn in as a justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia later this month. McCullough’s investiture will be held in Richmond on May 23 at 3 p.m. Virginia lawmakers voted in March to elevate McCullough to the high court, ending a bitter months-long political battle over the vacant high court seat. Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Democrats wanted to elect Justice Jane Marum Roush, whom the governor appointed to temporarily fill the seat last year. Republicans objected to Roush’s appointment, saying they hadn’t been consulted. Prior to being elected to the Court of Appeals in 2011, McCullough worked in the Virginia attorney general’s office for more than 10 years.

Court translates for more indigenous defendants ALBUQUERQUE, N. M. (AP) - Francisca Lares Ralios, chained at the ankle and wrist, shuffled up to the podium in federal court. She wore a loose braid in her black hair and stood barely taller than the waist of her 6-foot-2- inch public defender. She was second-to-last in a long line of defendants earlier this month facing sentencing by U. S. Judge Kenneth Gonzales for felony illegal re-entry - meaning she had crossed the border illegally more than once, the Albuquerque Journal reported (http://bit.ly/1QXJGGQ). It took a moment longer than usual to get the proceedings going since Lares Ralios - like an increasing number of the undocumented immigrants criminally prosecuted in the Las Cruces federal court - speaks almost no Spanish. She speaks K’iché, also spelled Quiché, a Mayan language native to the highlands of Guatemala. Indigenous communities throughout Mexico and Central America have long sustained patterns of migration to the U. S. But the federal court in Las Cruces only recently began seeing a variety of languages for which it previously had no ready interpreter, defense attorneys say. The increased flow of migrants from Central America over the past two years has subtly shifted the linguistic makeup of the newcomers at the Southwest border. Mam - a Mayan language spoken by more than half a million people in Guatemala - last year displaced French as one of the top 10 languages spoken in the U. S. immigration court system, according to the Department of Justice Executive Office for Immigration Review. K’iché ranked No. 11. An assistant to the court dialed a phone number over a broadcast system, and a woman’s voice came on the line. She spoke English to the courtroom and K’iché to Lares Ralios, who was so soft-spoken the interpreter had to ask her to repeat herself several times. Before issuing her sentence, Gonzales asked Lares Ralios if there was anything she would like to say. The interpreter translated the judge’s words, and then Lares Ralios spoke. The interpreter translated her words for the judge: “I would like to go home and go along with my family.” Last fiscal year, 44 percent of the more than 331,000 immigrants apprehended by Border Patrol at the Southwest border came from Central America. Guatemala alone is home to at least 25 indigenous languages, according to Ethnologue, an online catalog of the world’s known living languages. The linguistic variety recently seen in the Las Cruces court - including Mexican indigenous languages, such as Nahuatl, Mixteco and Triqui - has presented challenges for the attorneys tasked with representing the speakers and for the court, which is required by the Department of Justice to provide translation. “That’s the hard part with these cases,” said Andre Poissant, the federal public defender who represented Lares Ralios. “We often don’t have access to interpreters until an hour before a hearing.” Gonzales sentenced Lares Ralios to 35 days in jail: the time she had already served. He recommended she be reunited with a young son and nephew who were in the care of Child Protective Services - they had crossed the border illegally together, her attorney said - with the intention that they might be deported to Guatemala together. ___ Information from: Albuquerque Journal, http://www.abqjournal.com

Taking flight: Jackson center helps injured raptors WILSON, Wyo. (AP) - They first thought it was a baby turkey vulture, thin and severely dehydrated, jaw broken, eyes shut. It was brought to the Teton Raptor Center after the Idaho Game and Fish found the nestling in late September, an odd time of year for baby birds. But when it arrived, the staff based in Wilson quickly realized it wasn’t a turkey vulture. It was a baby barn owl covered in grit, the Casper Star-Tribune reported (http://bit.ly/1VSjjtY). Just like all of the rescued birds brought to the Raptor Center near Jackson, this baby barn owl needed help. The staff provided antibiotics and food, rehabilitating the bird with hopes of returning her to the wild. The barn owl grew stronger. She passed a flight test, and before her release, she needed to prove her capability to hunt for live prey. The staff presented a mouse. “And the mouse came over to her feet, and she’d fly away,” said Meghan Warren, the rehabilitation coordinator at the Teton Raptor Center. It was odd behavior to say the least. Later that week, Warren entered the barn owl’s enclosure and discussed the event with another staff member. As they chatted, Warren noticed something even stranger. She had been talking and making noise for five minutes, and the barn owl was still fast asleep. Barn owls have some of the best ears on Earth: They can hear a mouse’s heartbeat from 10 feet away. “And this bird hadn’t even woken up with them coming in, moving around and talking,” Becky Collier said, the senior avian educator at the Teton Raptor Center. “That’s when (we) started saying, ‘Wait a minute.’” The barn owl was deaf. It did not matter whether she was born that way or lost her hearing via an unknown injury. Deafness is a debilitating trait for a bird that depends on hearing to survive. She could no longer be released. Established in 1997, the Raptor Center provides veterinary care and rehabilitation for birds of prey. The nonprofit also has an educational program featuring birds that are not fit to be released into the wild. The barn owl was a perfect candidate. The center went through proper paperwork, and officially added the barn owl to their education program on April 1. She was the latest addition to a program that features a handful of birds, including a bald eagle, a golden eagle, a red-tailed hawk, owls, a falcon and more. Roughly 100 birds are brought to the Raptor Center every year, all for various reasons. Sometimes they’re struck by cars or electrocuted by power lines (the center avoids intervening with non-human-induced injuries). Currently, the center has five birds in rehab, receiving medication, food, a hyperbolic oxygen chamber, x-rays and more, all with hopes of returning the animal back into nature. “I think in an ideal world, if you’re doing your job right, all rehab centers strive to put themselves out of business,” Collier said. “Because it means that people are driving slow, and making wise choices. I think the key, though, is that accidents will happen.” Story Continues →

Cops apologise for fake bomber's 'Allahu akbar' cry In the exercise, a suicide bomber was supposed to have detonated explosives and opened fire in the middle of a busy shopping mall, near Manchester. But critics claimed that the depiction of the terrorist "stereotyped" Muslims. The exercise was mounted to test emergency services' response to an extremist attack in the wake of Islamic State attacks in Paris and Brussels. Assistant Chief Constable for Greater Manchester Garry Shewan apologised after receiving several critical tweets about the exercise. "On reflection we acknowledge that it was unacceptable to use this religious phrase immediately before the mock suicide bombing, which so vocally linked this exercise to Islam. We recognise and apologise for the offence this has caused. " But Keith Vaz, chairman of the Commons' home affairs committee, said: "There was no need for the chief constable to apologise. I regard it as puzzling. His force was only doing its job. "It is established that Islamic jihadists are the most serious threat to the UK and it was important that the demonstration be as realistic as possible. " The exercise has been hailed as one of the biggest counter-terrorism training exercises to take place in Britain, with 800 volunteers recruited to play the dead and wounded. "Victims" smeared in fake blood were seen running for their lives during the exercise. Scores more played dead as the "terrorists" attempted to seize control of the shopping mall. A mentally disturbed German man carrying a survival knife yesterday stabbed to death one person and slashed three others in a bloody dawn attack at a railway station near Munich. The assault sparked fears of a jihadist attack because the 27-year-old had yelled "Allahu akbar". But, police said the man had no known links to Islamist militant groups.

Three points that prompted Shashank Manohar to quit as BCCI prez 1. 3-year tenure for prez The recommendation of having a three-year tenure for the BCCI president was not acceptable to Manohar. For the office-bearers, the Lodha Commission suggested it should not exceed more than two consecutive terms, and he/she cannot hold a post in the BCCI and their respective state association simultaneously. Shashank Manohar. Pic/AFP 2. One-state, one-vote The 'one-state, one-vote' recommendation didn't go down well with Manohar. He argued that it would change the canvas of Indian cricket. It directly affects Manohar's interest as Vidarbha could lose its vote in Maharashtra to Maharashtra Cricket Association and Mumbai Cricket Association. 3. Age limit of 70 The Lodha Commission's recommendation to cap the age of office-bearers at 70 was something the BCCI tried hard to negate. It is learnt, that Shashank Manohar felt that when there is no age cap on the Prime Minister and President of the country, then why have an age limit for BCCI officials?

Alan Butcher relates his adventures in Zim Frantic phone calls are made. Teammates are quizzed about the missing man’s whereabouts, questions are asked about the night before. But at international level? It cannot happen, can it? Well, let Alan Butcher take up the story. “Concerns were raised when Shingi Masakadza, his usual lift to cricket, arrived at the ground late and without him,” he writes. “He had not turned up at the normal pick-up point and could not be contacted by phone. Shingi had waited, driven to the player’s home, waited some more but eventually had to leave for the ground. I phoned his mother but she was in church with her phone off. It was now time for the team warm-up.” The player in question was the young Zimbabwe leg spinner Natsai M’shangwe and this was a match in a tri-nations series between Zimbabwe, South Africa and Bangladesh in 2012. M’shangwe had been told the night before that he was playing and had made arrangements to meet some colleagues the next day. To do so he had to catch a bus, for which the fare was $1. But apparently he did not have the money, and he did not have a phone either because he had sold it to pay for previous bus fares. As Butcher observes, it’s indeed a “pathetic tale”, and not one that was easily believed by Zimbabwe’s cricket hierarchy because M’shangwe was dropped and not even permitted to attend training. But it is also a tale that epitomises the problems Butcher faced in his three-year stint as coach of Zimbabwe, an adventure related entertainingly in his first book The Good Murungu, with the title taken from a comment made by his housekeeper in the capital when presented with a new bed. “Sah, you are a good murungu,” he said in thanks while using the Shona word that means Caucasian. “I must leave it to the reader to decide if the accolade was deserved,” says Butcher at the book’s beginning. This book is not all about cricket and it is all the better for it. The book is part lament for a beautiful and troubled country’ blurb describes it as “part cricket memoir, part travelogue, part love song and part lament for a beautiful and troubled country”. Here is evidence that, despite all the troubles, Zimbabwe as a country and its cricket can still come together to create a tremendous tale.

Serie A: 'Exclusive' Chinese talks pave way for AC Milan takeover Milan: AC Milan moved a step closer to a takeover after the struggling Serie A giants announced the start of "exclusive negotiating rights" with Chinese investors on Tuesday. Club owner Silvio Berlusconi said last week he was open to selling a majority stake in the fallen seven-time European champions, with a preference to keep the club "in Italian hands". But following the recent collapse of talks with Thai businessman Bee Taechaubol, a statement by Milan on their official website www.acmilan.com suggested Berlusconi's holding company Fininvest is now ready to begin serious negotiations with a Chinese consortium. "Fininvest has reached an agreement with a group of Chinese investors in establishing exclusive negotiating rights for the sale of shares of AC Milan," said the statement. "A memorandum of understanding has also been signed which will act as a starting point for more in depth negotiations to take place. "The exclusive negotiating rights have been established to be compatible with the complexities of the talks, the needs of the club and the appointments scheduled in the footballing calendar. " On paper, Milan now look to be on the road to an eventual takeover that would see them become the second Milan club, after Inter Milan, to be sold to Asian owners. Inter was taken over by Indonesian businessman Erick Thohir in November 2014. However 'Rossoneri' fans will watch cautiously from the sidelines to see what transpires from the latest chapter in a prolonged epic about the club and it's likely future direction. In June last year it was announced Taechaubol would purchase a 48 % stake in Milan, although the deal came to nothing after the Thai reportedly failed in his bid to collect the necessary funds. Milan, who last won Serie A's 'scudetto' in 2011 under current Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri, host Roma in their final game of the season on Sunday looking for a win that could help them seal European football next season. But it is a reflection of Milan's failure to invest in top players, and their on-field woes, that they are now merely fighting to qualify for the Europa League -- instead of the Champions League they dominated with some of the world's top players in Berlusconi's 1990s heyday.
