Yakın tarihte iletişimin kamusal mekânı olan postanelerin ziyaretçileri bu nedenle azalmış, tarihteki yerini almış olan ‘Posta Kutu’ları ise bilindiği üzere artık kullanılmamaktadır. İstanbul’da ticaret ve yönetim yapılarının en çok bulunduğu semtlerden biri olan Eminönü’nde bulunan ve bu çalışmanın konusu olarak belirlenen Büyük Postane hakkında yapılan bu çalışmada, öncelikle tarihsel sürece ilişkin kaynak araştırması yapılmış ve yerinde yapılan görsel belgelemenin ardından özellikle iç mekân kurgusu incelenmiş ve izin verildiği ölçüde çizim yapılmıştır. Günümüzde tescilli bir kamu yapısı olan Büyük Postane aynı zamanda mimarisi ve haberleşmedeki tarihsel görevi ve nitelikleri ile korunması gerekli önemli bir yapıdır. Büyük Postane binasının iç mekân donanımı, yatay, düşey yapı elemanları ve mobilyaları genel tasarım ilkeleri ve malzemeleri açısından incelenmiş ve günümüzde kullanılan PTT hizmet bölümü ile özgün teknik donatı, araç ve gereçler ile mobilyaların tarihsel gelişimi dikkate alınarak Büyük Postane Müzesi’nde çalışmalar yapılmıştır.

In this context, it is aimed to discuss the activities of the Community Houses for protection of our cultural heritage through “Language and Literature” and “History and Museum” branches. The aim of the study is to offer an evaluation, which contributes to the activities of both branches, basing the role of Community Houses upon protection of our tangible and intangible cultural assets. While examining public knowledge and linguistic issues as part of duties and responsibilities of the “Language and Literature” branch, studies on excavation, conference, museum building, restoration and preservation of ancient monuments were analysed by the “History and Museum” branch. In this direction, a literature review was made on cultural heritage studies that had been carried out by the Community Houses until 1951, predominantly between 1933 and 1935. We have reached some information demonstrating that people realized the importance of the cultural inventory and adopted the consciousness of protecting the national values and studies on art, history, archeology increased. It has been determined that the “Language and Literature” branch tried to instil a consciousness of national culture and emphasize the language issue throughout the country.

Consisting of two main components, the first part approached the mechanism by questioning how was established, its workplace, who is involved, its guidelines, and alterations. The second component is an attempt to understand the censorship regime of the period with the analysis of Tasvîr-i Efkâr. Hence, it endeavors to evaluate the frequently seen censored content by analyzing them day-by-day and transforming its intensity into a systematical data. Thus, it attempted to demonstrate the observed restrictions not a constant policy against the Anatolian Movement, but a multi-component system having motivations, fluctuations in its intensity, alterations in the censored content, and the policies of governments. Therefore, the second chapter attempted to study the mechanism on the Istanbul press through two sub-sections; the censorship of the Ottoman government and the Interallied. The third chapter examines the newspaper in four-parts (1) the transition period, (2) the peak period of censorship, (3) of Congresses, and (4) the term between the Ali Rıza Paşa’s government and de jure occupation of Istanbul.
