Miri – Kota Kinabalu Roadmap Updated March 2011 by [email protected] • Disclaimer: I found this roadmap on the internet when trying to figure out how to get to Kota Kinabalu (Sabah) from Miri (Sarawak) by road during school holiday in March 2011. What makes this project challenging and interesting is the fact that you have to cross international borders Malaysia/Brunei 4 times and clear 10 immigration checkpoints. This happens because of the geography of Brunei which is separated by Limbang, part of Sarawak state. • To me this map is comprehensive enough to guide travelers crossing land borders and clearing immigration and custom checkpoints, despite not up to scale. Some facts were no longer relevant during my March 2011 trip. So I took liberty in updating this map in particular the stretches I traveled. I also put some actual site photos. • Malaysians need no visa going into Brunei, international passport will do. For the rest, check your visa requirement first. I did not see any Visa On Arrival counter at various immigration checkpoints. • All the credits go to the original author, God knows who. Page 1/21 Abstract Plasmodium knowlesi is the main cause of malaria in Sarawak, where studies on vectors of P. knowlesi have been conducted in only two districts. Anopheles balabacensis and An. donaldi were incriminated as vectors in Lawas and An. latens in Kapit. We studied a third location in Sarawak, Betong, where of 2,169 mosquitoes collected over 36 days using human-landing catches, 169 (7.8%) were Anopheles spp. PCR and phylogenetic analyses identied P. knowlesi and/or P. cynomolgi, P. eldi, P. inui, P. coatneyi and novel Plasmodium spp. in salivary glands of An. latens and An. introlatus from the Leucosphyrus Group and in An. collessi and An. roperi from the Umbrosus Group. Phylogenetic analyses of cytochrome oxidase subunit I sequences indicated three P. knowlesi-positive An. introlatus had been misidentied morphologically as An. latens, while An.

    Akademika 83(2&3) 2013: 47-59 Pandangan Dunia dan Konteks Upacara dalam Sumazau Penampang, Sazau Papar dan Sumazau Paina Membakut World View and Ritual Context in Sumazau Penampang, Sazau Papar and Sumazau Paina Membakut LOW KOK ON & SRI NINGSIH ABSTRAK Secara turun-temurun, kepercayaan terhadap pelbagai semangat baik dan semangat jahat sangat mempengaruhi pandangan dunia (world view) dan kepercayaan etnik Kadazan di Sabah. Pandangan dunia mereka berkonsepkan keharmonian antara alam ghaib dan alam nyata. Daripada pandangan dunia yang sedemikianlah timbulnya konsep ahasu (panas) dan osogit (sejuk). Keadaan ahasu, yang dipercayai sebagai punca kepada penyakit dan masalah lain yang timbul dalam komuniti Kadazan harus disejukkan melalui pelbagai ritual. Kajian ini berasaskan kaedah temu bual dan pemerhatian secara langsung terhadap persembahan ketiga-tiga jenis tarian rakyat etnik Kadazan yang telah dikaji. Kajian ini mendapati Sumazau Penampang, Sazau Papar dan Sumazau Paina Membakut berkait rapat dengan pandangan dunia dan ritual yang dikendalikan oleh bobohizan (pakar upacara etnik Kadazan). Semasa bobohizan mengendalikan sesuatu ritual, tubuhnya akan bergerak-gerak dalam keadaan yang dikenali sebagai menurun. Perbuatan bobohizan sedemikian dikenali sebagai “sumazau”, yang bermaksud menari. Tarian sedemikian dianggap suci kerana etnik Kadazan percaya bahawa pada ketika ini, bobohizan sedang dipimpin oleh semangat dari alam ghaib. Fokus analisis dalam tulisan ini tertumpu kepada makna simbolik di sebalik persembahan ketiga-tiga jenis tarian rakyat etnik Kadazan. Selain itu, kaitan antara tarian, pandangan dunia dan kepercayaan turun-temurun etnik Kadazan turut dibincang. Dengan berbuat demikian, tulisan ini menonjolkan tarian rakyat etnik Kadazan dari segi simbolisme dalam upacara yang tidak banyak dikaji orang. This report parallels and complements our 2012 Annual Report. This report is written in accordance to the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3.1 Guidelines and GRI’s Airport Operators Sector Supplement (AOSS). The content of this report has been verified by an independent external agency to ensure accuracy and reliability of this report. The third party verification institution has assured that the report conforms to the “C+” application level of the G3.1 and AOSS guidelines. In order to avoid duplication of information, some requirements of GRI are reported in our 2012 Annual Report as indicated in our GRI Index on Page 29. This report also reflects Malaysia Airports’ activities in relations to ISO9001, OHSAS18001 and ISO14001 standards where applicable.

A survey of 200 respondents in the Song district was conducted. To determine the objective eth- nolinguistic vitality, a structural analysis was performed on their sociolinguistic backgrounds. The results show the Iban language dominates in family, friend- ship, transactions, religious, employment, and education domains. The language use patterns show functional differentiation into the Iban language as the “low language” and Malay as the “high language”. The respondents have positive at- titudes towards the Iban language. The dimensions of language attitudes that are strongly positive are use of the Iban language, Iban identity, and intergenera- tional transmission of the Iban language. The marginally positive dimensions are instrumental use of the Iban language, social status of Iban speakers, and prestige value of the Iban language. Inferential statistical tests show that language atti- tudes are influenced by education level. However, language attitudes and useof the Iban language are not significantly correlated. By viewing language use and attitudes from the perspective of ethnolinguistic vitality, this study has revealed that a numerically dominant group assumed to be safe from language shift has only medium vitality, based on both objective and subjective evaluation.
