Rhythm, Dance, and Resistance in the New Orleans Second Line
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles “We Made It Through That Water”: Rhythm, Dance, and Resistance in the New Orleans Second Line A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Ethnomusicology by Benjamin Grant Doleac 2018 © Copyright by Benjamin Grant Doleac 2018 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION “We Made It Through That Water”: Rhythm, Dance, and Resistance in the New Orleans Second Line by Benjamin Grant Doleac Doctor of Philosophy in Ethnomusicology University of California, Los Angeles, 2018 Professor Cheryl L. Keyes, Chair The black brass band parade known as the second line has been a staple of New Orleans culture for nearly 150 years. Through more than a century of social, political and demographic upheaval, the second line has persisted as an institution in the city’s black community, with its swinging march beats and emphasis on collective improvisation eventually giving rise to jazz, funk, and a multitude of other popular genres both locally and around the world. More than any other local custom, the second line served as a crucible in which the participatory, syncretic character of black music in New Orleans took shape. While the beat of the second line reverberates far beyond the city limits today, the neighborhoods that provide the parade’s sustenance face grave challenges to their existence. Ten years after Hurricane Katrina tore up the economic and cultural fabric of New Orleans, these largely poor communities are plagued on one side by underfunded schools and internecine violence, and on the other by the rising tide of post-disaster gentrification and the redlining-in- disguise of neoliberal urban policy. -

Primal Scream Lady Sovereign Devo the Bar-Kays
MUSIC SXSW 09 LIVE SHOTS CONTINUED FROM P.57 exhilarating UK rockers 25-plus years on. THE BAR-KAYS Their Cedar Street gig ranged from 1990’s Dirty Dog Bar, March 19 classic Screamadelica (“Loaded”) to a thun- dering version of new single “Can’t Go Back.” Gillespie looked and sounded a full decade younger than the shorn, scrawny blowhard that staggered through his last Austin incarna- tion in 2000. With demon-green laser beams shooting over the sardine-tinned audience’s sea of raised hands, the Scream’s skintight renditions of classic hyper-rockers “Swastika Eyes” and “Miss Lucifer” twice resulted in a stage-front scrum that brought security into the crush. Encoring the 50-minute set with an electrifying version of “Rocks,” Gillespie and company exited slapping front-row flesh, grin- ning, laughing, and looking altogether pleased with their own beautiful future. – Marc Savlov LADY SOVEREIGN Club de Ville, March 20 AUBREY EDWARDS Beginning 20 minutes late, Lady Call it the Beale Street Invasion. After hip-hoppers Free Sol filled in for 8Ball & MJG, who missed their flight, and gized while Sov’s DJ Annalyze spun and rockers Lucero drenched the crowd in bourbon-inspired grit, the Bar-Kays headlined with scratched, and seven or eight entouragers a Delta soul/funk party they’ve pumped for the past 40 years. -
Devo - Live 1980 Dualdisc Review
Devo - Live 1980 DualDisc Review artist: DEVO album: Live 1980 format: DualDisc label: Music Video Distributors release year: 2005 performance: 7 sound: 3 reviewed by: Bryan Dailey Looking back 25 years later at DEVO, what sticks in my mind the most isn’t the red spud energy hats or the legless white uniform space suits. It is the numbers of bands who have since driven down the alternative rock road that DEVO paved. Like Frank Zappa before them, DEVO took “weird” rock and turned it into something people would actually listen to on the radio. From legendary alt rockers like Oingo Boingo and the B-52’s to modern-day punkers like Green Day and The Offspring, these groups all owe a little thanks to DEVO for having the guts to make quirky pop music and not be apologetic about it. The closest thing to a direct modern copy of DEVO comes by way of the Aquabats, a group of zany ska rockers who dress up as superheroes and turn their live show into a live action comic book. They had their 15 minutes of fame with the minor hit “Superrad,” but while watching this DEVO disc, I can’t help but think back to seeing the Aquabats live. There was no MTV yet at the time of this recording. To see bands perform live, you’d have to stay up late and catch them on shows like “Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert” or “Saturday Night Live.” Now that there are so many non- music-related TV shows on MTV and MTV2, you rarely ever get to see to see any live concert performances, let alone an entire show start to finish. -

This model was expanded upon by musicians in England and Germany during the late-1970s who developed the popular music style called Industrial as a fusion of experimental popular music sounds, performance art theatricality, and avant-garde composition. -

The Stiff Records Story Ebook, Epub
BE STIFF: THE STIFF RECORDS STORY PDF, EPUB, EBOOK Richard Balls | 348 pages | 30 Oct 2014 | Soundcheck Books | 9780957570061 | English | London, United Kingdom Be Stiff: The Stiff Records Story PDF Book Stiff is still going and new generations are buying T-shirts and discovering its back catalogue. Meanwhile, West End police have just received an anonymous tip-off from a man with a decidedly Irish accent telling them that another Irishman of dodgy countenance is causing trouble on Park Lane. Beyond Vinyl. Official UK Charts Company. And which then continued to offer more of the same for much of the next ten years? Everyone was cowering in the corner. Robinson was furious. The song is about uptight Americans, not the label, but Stiff adopted it as an anthem, and I decided to use it for the title of the book. And I liked the way they sold records out of the back of a van and pressed the records up in reggae studios. We played a gig at Dingwalls, sort of a showcase in front of the industry, and someone threw a glass at me because they thought I was taking the piss out of rockabilly. Balls' other book on the life of Ian Dury sold a hefty 30, copies, so he has a following. Evidently, to work with Dury you had to take him warts and all. Denotes that the single entered the UK Singles Chart. I went to the Portobello Hotel with a contract, and their singer Brian Setzer agreed to go with us. Today TV Smith credits Stiff for their sparky in-house wit. -
