Press Release Press Release Prestigious China Music Awards Hosted at Venetian Macao for Third Consecutive Year Cotai Arena stage packed with international stars (Macao, April 23, 2014) – Sponsored by The Venetian® Macao, the prestigious China Music Awards, with a theme of “Music My Heart, Dream the Future,” returned to the integrated resort for the third consecutive year, bringing some of the biggest and brightest stars from China and beyond to the Cotai Arena stage Wednesday night. Excited fans lined the red carpet at The Venetian Macao main lobby to catch glimpses of their favourite superstars attending this year’s 18th Channel [V] China Music Awards and Asian Influential Power Grand Ceremony, including Latin prince Ricky Martin, Korean boy band EXO-M, Japanese singer Kana Nishino, Alan Tam, CoCo Lee, Show Lo, Jimmy Lin, Hins Cheung, Chi-Lam Cheung, Kevin Zheng, Sun Nan, Yu Quan, Yang Yu-Ying, among dozens of others. Joining them on the red carpet were representatives from Star China Media Ltd., and Toh Hup Hock, Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director of Sands China Ltd.; Toh was one of the evening’s award presenters, along with Ciarán Carruthers, Senior Vice President and Director of Venetian and Plaza Operations. International superstar David Beckham also attended the red carpet and award ceremony, and was one of the award presenters at the mega-event. A total of 37 awards were presented at the event, including Asian Most Popular Singer, Asian Most Influential Japanese Singer and the China Music Lifetime Achievement Award, among others. Beckham presented the Asian Most Stylish Singer and Most Popular International Chinese Singer to CoCo Lee. The presence of over 100 members of the press from mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao was a testament to the magnitude of the event, which was broadcast and webcast live to an estimated global audience of 2 billion viewers. The China Music Awards launched in 1994 and has since gathered the nation’s top music industry talent in host cities like Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Hong Kong, Macao and Taipei. Besides hosting high-profile awards shows, the Cotai Arena has staged performances by some of the Asia’s and the world’s biggest music superstars, including the Rolling Stones, Rihanna, Eason Chan, Girls’ Generation and the stars of the hit TV reality series “The Voice of China.” In 2013 alone, broadcasts (both television and online) of events held at or sponsored by Sands China properties reached an estimated audience of over 900 million viewers in mainland China. When I turned thirteen, I used those skills to get away from them and escape into the shadows. A few months after that, I found Duncan Wu living on dumpster food in an alley. He hadn’t run away from his foster home to find something better. He’d run for his life. His foster parents had set up a deal to sell him and the three other kids to a sex slave ring. He was the only one who’d gotten away. Part of me wanted to leave him there, but I couldn’t because I knew from the shape he was in, starving and covered in sores, he wouldn’t make it on his own. So I’d taken him with me, fed him, sheltered him, and gotten him as healthy as we could be under the circumstances.

Who produces indie? What is the ideology behind it? How can they realize their idealistic goals? Who participates in the indie community? What are the relationships among mainstream popular music, rock music and indie music? In this thesis, I study the production, circulation, and reception of Chinese indie music, with special attention paid to class, aesthetics, and the influence of the internet and globalization. Borrowing Stuart Hall’s theory of encoding/decoding, I propose that Chinese indie music production encodes ideologies into music. Pierre Bourdieu has noted that an individual’s preference, namely, tastes, corresponds to the individual’s profession, his/her highest educational degree, and his/her father’s profession. Whether indie audiences are able to decode the ideology correctly and how they decode it can be analyzed through Bourdieu’s taste and distinction theory, especially because Chinese indie music fans tend to come from a community of very distinctive, 20-to-30-year-old petite-bourgeois city dwellers. Overall, the thesis aims to illustrate how indie exists in between the incompatible poles of mainstream Chinese popular music and Chinese rock music, rephrasing mainstream and alternatives by mixing them in itself.

    PRESS RELEASE United Nations Secretary-General appoints the Japanese singer MISIA as Honorary Ambassador for the 2010 United Nations Biodiversity Conference Montreal, 1 March 2010. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed the Japanese female singer and songwriter, MISIA, as the Honorary Ambassador for the forthcoming tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity, which will be held from 18 to 29 October 2010 in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan. In her honorary role, MISIA will help raise awareness of the continuing depletion of biological resources and inform the public on the sustainable use of biodiversity. “In this International Year of Biodiversity, we must counter the perception that people are disconnected from our natural environment. We must increase understanding of the implications of losing biodiversity,” said Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Referring to Honorary Ambassador MISIA, the Secretary-General said she could “help highlight our common struggles for protecting life on Earth and the actions we can take to slow down biodiversity loss.” Throughout her successful career, MISIA has been an advocate of sustainable development. Through her performances, she has worked to raise public awareness on the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and, in 2008, she established a voluntary organization, Child AFRICA, to support education in Africa. This honorary appointment will help bring much needed attention to the importance of biodiversity and the urgent need for progress to meet the three objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). On learning of her appointment, MISIA said, “While travelling to different parts of the world, I have realized that our life and culture vary a lot and this diversity has been nurtured by the rich natural environments of different regions.
