Have your say! ‘Our Place Catlins Community Plan’

The Council is keen to consult about the ‘Living and Working’ aspect of its ongoing plans for the district. Kaka Point is one focus area for the consultation based in .

What attracts people to live and work in our area? How can we enhance that attraction going into the future?

The Council is looking for feedback from locals, crib owners and visitors and consultation will start soon and continue over the summer. Look out for the consultation document in your mail soon – this will outline some possible ideas and include a survey to provide your feedback. There will also be some drop in meetings over summer, a presence at the Market Day, social media and websites. Also, this newsletter has been suggested as a useful medium to reach a significant number of residents and crib holders. We should have more information in December .

Ideas that might emerge could involve: infrastructure and facilities for locals and visitors, a design theme to give coherence to the township, ways to encourage education about the environment and its care, anything else which might enhance living and working in KP.

What things come to mind for you? Feel free to contact us at [email protected] .

4 Kaka Point Directory 2019 Thank you to all the street coordinators in helping distribute the 2019 KP Directory and for your continued support in making the Directory what it is today. We are all volunteers and as we know, it takes a lot of time and effort pulling the Directory together, so all support is appreciated. To ensure all KP residents/crib owners receive the latest version of the KP Directory, if for whatever reason you do not receive a copy of the Directory (available from the 27 November 2018) please contact one of the street coordinators (listed below). There have been many changes/additions to the 2019 Directory so it’s certainly worthwhile getting a copy of the latest version. We will not be leaving any Directories in mail boxes for security reasons. Our apologies for any errors or omissions seen in the KP Directory, but we rely on you as permanent residents/crib owners to keep us informed of any additions, changes or updates that need to be made to your contact de- tails. Please do not assume we will know if/where changes need to be made to your contact details, so let us know of any changes required which enables us to keep the Directory 'current'. We thank Clutha District Council (and Civil Defence) for covering the cost of the print of the Directory this year. Thank you and keep safe, Lisa Biginato, Raewyn Budge, Martin Ford

6 News. Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week

Thank you and well done to all those involved

A big THANK YOU to all those that came along to the Kaka Point (KP) clean up on Sunday 16 September (some from KP and from out of town) and to those that couldn't make the Sunday but participated in the 'rubbish pick up' in the weeks prior.

Between us over the 3 days we collected over 40 bags of rubbish. We picked up from the Nugget car park to Kaka Point, along Karoro Creek road (heading away from Wilsher Bay), from the Paretai straight (35K corner) up to Kaka Point, along the KP Beach and around some of the KP streets.

As per previous years, most of the rubbish collected consisted of e.g. bottles/cans (of some form), food cartons along with the food packaging and/or container or two!

Although so thankful and pleased with the turnout of you all over that weekend, I think we all continue to be disappointed and frustrated with the amount of rubbish we seem to pick up each year and that some people continue to deposit their rub- bish on our roads. It’s pretty hard to‘ Keep NZ Beautiful’ when this type of behaviour doesn’t seem to change….

Thanks again all, we couldn’t have done it without you! Until our next KP Clean up/Keep NZ Beautiful week Lisa Biginato and Tony Somerville

And a BIG THANK you to Lisa and Tony for all their motivation, organisation and hard work .

Some of the rubbish we picked up from KP!

7 News….. From Marilyn

A couple of photos of the working bee at garden on Sunday 23rd Sept. Only 5 people turned up but did a great job getting it ready for spraying and chipping. We would like to know how we can encourage more young people to help out as the more people the faster it’s done and lightens the load.

Bruce Murray

Bruce Murray, who passed away on 9th September, was taken in style to his funeral service in one of Allister Perrin’s shined up cattle trucks. Bruce has lived on the Nuggets Road Kaka Point for all of his life and was well known for getting the best price at the calf sale each year. It was always a big highlight of his farming career. He will be missed by his family and friends of Kaka Point. He was a member of the local Fire Brigade who lowered their flag to half mast in respect for Bruce.

Puzzling find

An unusual piece of metal recovered from the sea after a strong easterly, found below Glenys Wood’s home. Can anybody shine some light on what it might be?

8 Kaka Point Bowling Club.

The Opening for the upcoming 2018/19 season took place on the 6th October in sunny but cool conditions. Dave Inder, our current president, was unable to attend so his deputy Colin Paterson welcomed about 20 members and friends. This was one of the largest turnouts we have had at an opening over recent years which is a good sign. Two of our life members, Noelene Murdoch and Bing Crosby, delivered the first Jack and Bowl to officially launch the season. Teams played for the “Giles Trophy” with the win- ners being Ray Hopkins, Mark McKeever and John Sayles. The matches were followed with a Pot Luck Tea and refreshments. One of our new Members is Bruce Gold from the closed Stirling Club. It is good to have a Gold playing out of Kaka Point again.

The only sad note is the Ladies section of our club has had to pull out of their competition because of lack of numbers. Hopefully this will only last for 1 season and next year with some additional members we will be back to normal.

Being early in the season it’s too early to run the form guide over our teams but we have entered 2 teams in the Thursday Interclub competition ( 8 players ), 1 team in Tuesday evening Fives and the Saturday Interclub competition where anywhere from between 8 – 12 players are required depending on opposition numbers.

Our sister club from Dunedin, Macandrew Bay, is due to visit us on Sunday 11 November where an important trophy is played for. This season home and away fixture is now almost 25 years old and the ‘townies” always are confident of a win . We enjoy disappointing them. Stroll along and have a look, your most welcome, you could even play.

We hosted a large number of Tradies from Kaka Point and surrounds recently where they played a mini tournament amongst themselves followed by a Barbeque. Well done boys and girls you are welcome anytime, a good time had by all !! Some of the skills on display were noted by existing bowlers. Leading on from that remember next Waitangi Weekend when our club is hosting a community tournament so arrange those teams now. More details to follow.

Remember we leave out community bowls for your enjoyment so if you are at a loose end wander along at any time and have a go. Never too late to join as a social member.

PS Update : A good turn out, on a perfect KP day, watched us triumph over MacAndrew Bay to retain the trophy.

9 KAKA POINT RAMBLERS

September

3rd – Kaihiku – 9 Walkers (1 cyclist) - Met at the Warepa Hall then continued on to Flem- ing Road. Walked the block onto Hillfoot Road, stopping for lunch in a sunny sheltered spot under a row of eucalyptus trees, before continuing along Fleming Road and back to our cars. Turned out a really good day in spite of a shocking weather forecast and we finished with afternoon tea provided by Alma at her son’s farm, where we met two of her delightful granddaughters and daughter. 9.5 kms (and only 1 vehicle went pass - at the finish!!)

September 10th – Wairuna – 10 Walkers – Drove south of Clinton and parked at the Wairuna turnoff. Walked the block along Wairuna Siding Road and Clarke Road stop- ping for lunch halfway where the Hall was. Another enjoyable walk in the countryside. 9kms

September 24th - Kaka Point – 17 Walkers + Murphy & George – Left our vehicles at Port Molyneux Bay then walked along the beaches and footpaths to ‘Rakirakis’ corner, where we met with Tam Scott up at the Maori Cemetery. We were all thrilled to see what a marvellous job Tam has done, turning the area into what was once covered in bracken and blackberry, to a beautiful oasis with mown grass and lots of native planting, a special place. The sun came out and we enjoyed hearing Tam tell us the his- tory of some of the grave sites and stories about the place. We look forward to coming back when the Rata and Pohutakawa are in flower. From there we walked the short distance to the Domain at Karoro Creek for lunch before heading up to my place for a coffee etc., (gingerbread and choc., biscuits). The plan was to continue through the Bush Track but unfortunately the rain (which was forecast) came down with a venge- ance and we had to run a couple of car shuttles back to Port Molyneux for some of us to retrieve our cars. Never mind, it didn’t spoil a very enjoyable day. 6.5kms

October

1st – Owaka Heads – 17 Walkers + 1 Grandson & Murphy & George – Met at the Hina Hina Yacht Club and walked the road alongside the estuary towards Jacks Bay, then along another road which led us all the way out to the Owaka Heads where we were able to see across to and New Haven on the opposite side. The day was a mixture of sunshine and cloud and the bay looked beautiful with Cannibal Bay Head- land standing out. A great place to sit for lunch. With some dark clouds looming we decided to head back, but it turned out fine anyway. 9.5 kms

KAKA POINT RAMBLERS

October 8th – – 8 Walkers – Started off at the Fishing Camp, a reasonably fine day but needed a jacket. Went right out to the Light House where we spent some time try- ing to spot seals but most of them must have been out fishing. Returned back to the picnic area for lunch and enjoy the beautiful view. I had George & Judy (my brother and sister-in- law from Australia) join us for lunch which was really nice to share such a lovely place with them. On the way back called into Roaring Bay to the Yellow Eyed Penguin lookout, but of course they were still out fishing too. A really good day – 8kms.

October 15th – Between Matau & Koau River Mouths – 12 Walkers + Murphy, Wiki & George – Drove down to the bottom end of the island (Inchclutha), to the start of the Mil- lennium Walk, beside the Matau branch of the . Decided to walk along Tele- graph Road to the Koau Branch first, so that the rest of the walk was along the riverbanks and beach. This worked out well as we had the wind at our backs going along the beach. The sea looked really spectacular with huge spray blowing up from the breakers. There were hundreds of black backed gulls circling around and making a great noise. They were making their nests along the top of the sand, but we were too early to see any chicks. Shel- tered behind the sand dunes for lunch then headed up the Matau branch to our cars having walked a loop. 9kms. Good refreshing day.

29th – Benhar/Stirling – 9 Walkers - + Beau - Met at the Benhar turnoff and walked down the hill to Benhar to the Hoffman Kiln. Lex who has previously worked in the Pottery indus- try, gave us an interesting talk, explaining how the Hoffman Kiln operated. We then contin- ued along the gravel road to Stirling and had lunch beside the Hall. On the way up the hill through Stirling we detoured off to admire Margaret and Heather’s gardens before return- ing to our cars at the top completing a loop. Sunny weather and a nice day. 10kms

November

5th – – 12 Walkers + Murphy – Parked at the Wangaloa Golf Course where there is a short path down onto the beach. This was my first time on this part of the beach, and when we emerged onto the sand it was magic. The cliffs are a mixture of different colours and formations, plus there are lots of ice plants flowering over parts of them, really inter- esting, you just had to take photos. We walked a further 3kms north before stopping for lunch in the sand dunes, then returned via the road. An enjoyable day - 8kms
