Le Guin offers the Reader of The Dispossessed: An Ambiguous Utopia a utopian vision that balances flux with stability. With the novel‘s textual structure, ideological underpinnings, and imagined worlds, Le Guin teaches the Reader ways to change the world, and through rhetorical criticism, I explore how rhetoric, anarchism, and feminism articulate possibilities for socio-political transformation in her novel. The Dispossessed features a society informed by Taoist principles, anarcho- syndicalist organization, and open and changing relational structures. More specifically, Le Guin imagines new ways of being in the world by using Taoist paradox and contradiction to guide the Reader down a new path, weaves in Kropotkin‘s anarchism to re-work how society functions and labors, and, although she did not call her suggestions feminist, performs feminist politics to re-relate the individual to institutions, identities, and places. Textually, Le Guin strikes a balance between opening and closing the text. The novel opens outward to the Reader, with uncertainty and flux characterizing the reading experience. The cognitive estrangement that drives science fiction separates the Reader from the novel‘s setting but encourages the Reader to seek answers to real-world problems in the novel‘s fictional environment. Le Guin trains her Reader to look for connections, to participate in creating the argument, and to craft relationships. To prevent the Reader from wandering endlessly, however, Le Guin closes the text using a spiraling structure, similar to a spinning skater, to turn the Reader back toward the central points. Recurring symbols, such as prisons and light, guide the Reader through these twists, keeping the text in motion as the Reader navigates the turns. Le Guin provides additional guidance using iconicity to unite content and form. iv Le Guin draws on paradox, ambiguity, and confusion to encourage her Reader not to share her protagonist‘s journey but to embark on one of her or his own, informed by Taoist philosophy. The Reader learns, through the novel, how to navigate dialectic, contradiction, and paradox. Those paradoxes help both the main character and the Reader to appreciate how truths might emerge from the tension created by contradiction. The re-working of the workplace that Le Guin performs in The Dispossessed offers the Reader a view of how anarcho-syndicalism could change how work functions. Workers in Kropotkin‘s workplace enjoy their work, administer and organize themselves, and depend on other syndicates to help them to create a balanced society. The society that Le Guin forms in the novel applies Kropotkin‘s decentralized government to separate the means of distribution from the means of production and his syndical and interdependent societal organization and work structure. The motives driving characters to work form a balanced social organism that eliminates government and maximizes individual freedom. Le Guin uses the novel to alter not only how people work but how people relate to one another, to institutions, and to vectors of identity. To avoid socio-political dystopia, the Reader can turn to the new relationships that Le Guin offers in The Dispossessed. The novel offers new ways to relate to institutions, identities, and the planet. Each new relationship option helps to stabilize the protagonist, and the Reader, in the midst of a fluctuating political world and reading experience. There are plodding sections of political machinations and long stretches of self-analysis and introspection on the part of the main characters Ari and Cyteen. The Cyteen which weren't going anywhere Cyteen long, but had there been content I would be glad to read twice as much. There are a number of political factions in Union's Cyteen, the main ones being the Centrists and the Expansionists. Human colonization has expanded out into the Cyteen, but originally only by slower-than-light travel sponsored by the private Sol Corporation. It just doesn't feel like the 25th century. I even think it's four stars because I was so interested in the character of Ari2.

Judith Jarvis Thomson on abortion; a libertarian perspective1 I. Introduction Abortion is one of the most vexing issues faced by society. On the one hand, there are those who favor the pro-choice position. In their view, the woman, and she alone (along with the advice of her doctor – but the final decision must be hers), should be able to legally determine on what basis, and whether, her pregnancy should be conducted. She should be as free to end her pregnancy at any stage of the development of her fetus, or give birth to it after the usual term of nine months. On the other hand, there are those who favor what is called the pro-life position. In this perspective, the fetus, from the moment of conception, is a full rights-bearing human being.

What was your first literature? I didn’t know science fction existed until I was eighteen; then I fell in pretty deeply. The frst book I remember reading was Huckleberry Finn, and I still have that copy of the book with me, it has a gorgeous cover depicting Huck and Jim pulling a caught fsh onto the raft, in vibrant colors. For years I pretended to be Huck Finn. My parents subscribed to the Scholastic book of the month club, and I read those when they came in the mail pretty much the day of arrival. I read everything that caught my eye at the library when I was a child, then as a teenager did the same, but became a fan of locked- room detective mysteries, chiefy John Dickson Carr but also Ellery Queen, and all the rest of that crowd from the 1930s. Then just as I was leaving for college I ran into the science fction section at the library, all the books with their rocketship-and-radiation signs on the spine, and that was very exciting. In college I majored in history 78 | Kim Stanley RobinSon and literature, and on the side majored in science fction, absorbing the New Wave pretty much as it happened. Did your parents read to you as a kid? Did anyone? Do you read to your kids? Yes, my mom read to my brother and me at bed- time, and then I read on by myself with a fashlight.

Digital feminist activism is a new iteration of feminist activism, offering new tools and tactics for feminists to utilize to spread awareness, disseminate information, and mobilize constituents. In this paper I examine the intent, usefulness, and potential impact of digital feminist activism in the United States by analyzing key examples of social movements conducted via digital media. These analyses not only provide useful examples of a variety of digital feminist efforts, they also highlight strengths and weaknesses in each campaign with the aim of improving the impact of future digital feminist campaigns.

This session examines the classical liberal answers to three questions. How do we decide what the role of government should be (philosophy or methodology)? Why should government be limited (consequences or rights)? What is the legitimate role of government? The different answers to those questions are presented in five different schools of classical liberalism: Chicago, Public Choice, Austrian, Natural Rights, and Anarcho-Capitalism. Students will share their answers to these questions in relation to these schools of thought. 1:30-3:30 Jason Brennan, Georgetown University Libertarianism, Democracy, and Government What we want government to be empowered to do depends in part on how well government will use that power. The very power we create to help secure our children’s future will often be used against our children instead. In the real world, we cannot just assume government agents will always act competently or in good faith. This session explores questions such as: What is government failure? Why do libertarians tend to oppose interventionist government? Why are libertarians not much excited by, and sometimes even hostile to, democracy? Swartz The Hugo Awards originally were called the Science Fiction Achievement Awards and first were given out at Philcon II, the World Science Fiction Con- vention of 1953, held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The second oldest--and most prestigious--awards in the field, they quickly were nicknamed the Hugos (officially since 1958), in honor of Hugo Gernsback (1884 -1967), founder of Amazing Stories, the first professional magazine devoted entirely to science fiction. No awards were given in 1954 at the World Science Fiction Con in San Francisco, but they were restored in 1955 at the Clevention (in Cleveland) and included six categories: novel, novelette, short story, magazine, artist, and fan magazine.

That they are Other is (vide Lacan et al.) the foundation of language, the Father Tongue. By climbing up into his head and shutting out every voice but his own, "Civilized Man" has gone deaf. He can't hear the wolf calling him brother—not Master, but brother. He can't hear the earth calling him child—not Father, but son. He hears only his own words making up the world. He can't hear the animals, they have nothing to say. Children babble, and have to be taught how to climb up into their heads and shut the doors of perception. No use teaching woman at all, they talk all the time, of course, but never say anything. This is the myth of Civilization, embodied in monotheisms which assign soul to Man alone. Liturgy, Imagination and Poetic Language: a study of David Jones's The Anathemata Richard St.John Jeremy Marsh Thesis Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Durham School of English 1991 1 8 AUG 1992 Liturgy, Imagination and Poetic Language: a study of David Tones's The Anathemata Richard St.John Jeremy Marsh Abstract The thesis seeks to attempt an examination of David Jones's long poem The Anathemata primarily from a theologically informed standpoint. It sets out to understand,from the literary-critical point of view, the forces and influences that have come together in order to make the poem. At the same time, it is aware of and tries to explore the theological, liturgical and mythological material which provides Jones with both the background to and the content of his poem. It is argued that the form of poem, its linguistic content and the experience of reading it, are best understood in terms of pilgrimage and that such a metaphor is best suited to encompass both its huge scale and its attention to detail. From an overall examination of the available secondary literature, the thesis proceeds examine something of the experience of reading the poem, whether or not the poem can be conveniently understood as an epic and what Jones himself thought he was doing, at the same time his own theoretical stance is illuminated by reference to other contemporary thinkers.
