Mark Stanish, Jr. 2 MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT... Ciao A Tutti Italian Club Members, Let me start by thanking all of our members, friends, families, neighbors & sponsors for the hard work and support of Festa Italiana this year. An event like this, that spans 4 full days, takes an army of dedicated volunteers. These volunteers often work behind the scenes, or in the weeks leading up the events, baking cookies, gathering event staff, preparing areas, and so on. - and they often go unrecognized. I want thank you, all of you, for your work in support of the Club - whether at Sal Guagliardo Festa or at any other event. We have a very dedicated group of volun- Board President teers who are always ready, willing, and able to help. Without the sup- Board Of Directors port of volunteers, we wouldnt be able to host many of the events we do. For that, I say "Grazie!" Sal Guagliardo (President), Grace Ippolito (Vice-President), After 20 years of Festa Italiana, our committee recognized the Townsend Belt (Secretary), need for the future sustainability and continued growth of our event. Jay Anthony(Treasurer), Growth requires changes, and there?ll always be areas of improvement Kathy Perez-Dutton, Don Bodie, that accompany change. Please know that we appreciate and hear your Rick Califano, Dennis Costantino comments and feedback about this year?s Festa, and that we will be Jr., Sharon Mangione, Michelle Cardamone, Vince Sinardi, Jamie working diligently to ensure that Festa Italiana 2019 will exceed expec- Granell, Gianna tations. Thank you for your continued support! Tagliarini-Caravella, Sam Manna, The Club has been quite busy over the past couple months, Doug Dallio, and Louis Minardi, Gilda Capitano hosting dozens of events and weddings, and the schedule is not going to stop. We are working hard to show the community what we are ADVISORY BOARD made of, how beautiful our building is, and how strong we are as a Joseph Capitano, Jr. membership. Please remember that members receive a 25% discount Joe Capitano, Sr. on room rentals for events held in the building, whether the event is personal or business related. If you are part of an organization or business looking for space, we would welcome the opportunity. If you have an event in mind, please contact Mark Stanish @ [email protected] to obtain more information. In the coming months, we have several events planned that our members may enjoy. CRUSH Happy Hour has an incredible line up of special guest chefs and entertainers that are very new and unique. The Ladies Auxiliary will host their Annual Mother's Day Theme's N Tea on Saturday, May 12th, which will undoubtedly be a beautiful, sold out event! To close out the month of May, our Cemetery will be hosting a Memorial Day Ceremony & Mass on Sunday, May 27th @ 11:00am. As we head into the month of June, I'd like to remind everyone that the ladies Auxiliary will be hosting Campo Italiano June 4th through the 8th. This summer camp has a focus on Italian culture, traditions, heritage and more. The Club is also going to be hosting "Sunday Dinner" for our members on June 24th. This event will include a delicious homemade dinner buffet, along with drink specials and great camaraderie. This is a perfect event to invite the whole family! Lastly, I'd like to remind everyone that we are working hard on events that will commemorate our 100 Year Celebration. Our committee is working to develop events that not only honor the building, but also bring old traditions to life again, celebrate our rich heritage, and bring the com- munity into the building in new and exciting ways. We have quite a bit in store for you, and we will be communicating everything to you once we have it finalized. Cordialmente, Sal Guagliardo, President 3 Grazie! • 6. Economic Redevelopment
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY POST-DISASTER REDEVELOPMENT PLAN | 6-1 6. Economic Redevelopment This section of the plan discusses aspects of long-term redevelopment specific to the local economy. The Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) is the lead implementing body for this section and is responsible for working in coordination with relevant local and regional organizations and agencies. The Economic Redevelopment TAC guides Hillsborough County in supporting the local business community in their efforts to retain jobs and restore the local economy after a disaster. 6.1 OVERVIEW The ability of a community’s economy to rebound after a disaster will largely shape long-term recovery efforts. Economic recovery has not been substantially addressed in Hillsborough County’s disaster planning until now. The return of jobs, tourism, and other indicators of economic health are intertwined with housing recovery, infrastructure restoration, and health and social service provision. Economic recovery and redevelopment is a complicated issue that is not easily conducted through traditional government action and requires participation from the private sector. Consideration must be given to the different obstacles to recovery that small businesses will have, the decisions large employers must make about possibly relocating, and the opportunities to recruit new jobs to fit the changed workforce and market conditions after a major disaster. The purpose of this Economic Redevelopment TAC is to gather the expertise necessary to identify the economic issues and opportunities that Hillsborough County and cities will face after a disaster, and determine methods for a successful economic rebound. The Economic Redevelopment TAC identified the following priority issues that are discussed in Section 6.4: 1.

MAKING A SUNBELT PLACE: TAMPA, FLORIDA, 1923 – 1964 By ALAN J. BLISS A DISSERTATION PRESENTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA 2010 1 © 2010 Alan J. Bliss 2 To my wife Lynn, with gratitude for traveling a long highway with me 3 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Such success as this project may enjoy owes to many teachers at both Santa Fe Community College and the University of Florida. No one has been more influential in my academic life than the remarkable Robert Zieger, now Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida. Since the day in 1998 when I appeared in his office doorway, he has skillfully supervised my undergraduate honors thesis, my master’s paper, and this dissertation. He has made me a historian, and pulled it off with a deft combination of scholarly rigor, expertise, and good humor. I count our professional relationship and our friendship as my good fortune. My thanks also go to Barbara Oberlander of Santa Fe Community College, who aimed me in the direction of a distant goal, and referred me to Robert Zieger. In addition to Bob Zieger as chair, my dissertation committee included Jack Davis, Joseph Spillane, Jeffrey Needell, and Grant Thrall. Their perspectives on my project varied, but their thoughtful criticism throughout the research and writing process encouraged me and improved my work. Contrary to what some outside the academy may believe, to members of the graduate faculty at a research institution such as the University of Florida, every working hour is precious.

Brick streets are lined with sidewalks of hexagonal concrete pavers and old-fashioned, cast-iron street lamps. Buildings present ornate porticos, decorative brickwork, handmade wrought-iron balconies, and ornamental tile work. A few small, plain workers' cottages, once home to Ybor City's cigar workers, have been preserved. Mutual aid society clubhouses indicate the importance of benevolent organizations to Ybor City's immigrant population. On a quiet corner lies a small park dedicated to Cuban poet and revolutionary José Martí. The park is a reminder of Martí's efforts to gain support for the cause of Cuban freedom in the 1890s.
