Courage Opening

Have the Cub Scouts gather in a large circle.

Lead the following discussion with the Cub Scouts:

Our Core Value for the month of July is “Courage”.

Who can tell me what they think “Courage” means?

[Cub Scouts probably have an idea of what “Courage” means. Integrate as many of their answers as possible while you make sure that they understand that Courage means being brave and doing what is right regardless of our fears, the difficulties, or the consequences.]

How can a Cub Scout show courage?

[Listen to their responses and remind them to realize that they show that they have courage when they do something that is scary to them, when they are being honest and everytime that they try something new. ]

Let’s think more about how we can have courage as we say the Pledge of Allegiance and the Cub Scout Promise.

Make a Dragon

Materials: Copies of Dragon body parts Scissors Push pins Brass brads (9 per Cub Scout) Crayons/Markers

Instructions: 1. Carefully color and cut out all of the pieces of the dragons body. 2. Align the marks on the dragon body parts up to assemble the dragon as shown below.

3. Using a push pin, make a hole in the spot where the parts will connect. Once the hole is started, push the brass brad through the holes in the pieces that go together. then open the brad on the backside of the dragon to keep it in place.

Catch the Dragon’s Tail Game

Materials: Neckerchief for each team of 8-10 Cub Scouts

Instructions: 1. Have each team line up, one person behind each other. 2. Have each team member put their arms around the waist or on the hips of the person in front of them in line. 3. The last person in line tucks a neckerchief in the back of their belt or back pocket. 4. At the signal or when the leader says “go,” the dragon begins chasing its own tail, the object being for the person at the head of the line to snatch the handkerchief. The tricky part of this struggle is that the people at the front and the end of the dragon are clearly competing, but the folks in the middle aren't sure which way to go. 5. When the tail is finally captured, the head becomes the tail and wears the neckerchief and becomes the new tail, while the second from the front becomes the new head. 6. After three or four runs of this, have the dragons try to catch each other’s tails, for a full field of fun.

Knights of Old Closing Ceremony

Materials: None

Cubmaster or Den leader: Knights of old stood straight and tall as they pledged themselves to defend all things that were good and to strive to always do right.

[Ask the Cub Scouts to stand and make the Cub Scout sign.] Cub Scouts today stand straight and tall as they pledge themselves to do good, taking the Cub Scout Promise as their code while they do what they should. [Ask the Cub Scouts to say the Cub Scout Promise together.]

Let each of us show how we can be like the knights of old and always give friendly service to others.
