Many cat species are stoic and show few or very subtle external signs of pain. Additionally, the adverse effects of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in domestic cats are well documented and have discouraged many practitioners from trying novel NSAID’s in exotic felids. As in other animals, each cat’s response to pain and analgesics will vary, necessitating an individualized treatment plan. As a rule, always treat painful felids to effect, and not by rote reliance on published dosages. It is frequently necessary to try different agents and combinations to find which produces the optimal analgesic effect in exotic felids. In order to minimize adverse effects, it is desirable to work toward treatment with the lowest effective dose when treating chronic pain. Non-steroidal Antiinflammatory Drugs NSAIDs are antiinflammatory drugs which act both centrally and peripherally. The primary effects are believed to be caused by their ability to inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes in the arachidonic acid metabolism cascade. The COX-1 isoform is regarded as constitutive (continuously expressed) and is responsible for many homeostatic processes, such as maintenance of gastric mucosal integrity, platelet function, and renal autoregulation.

In 2017, with support from the WildCats Conservation Alliance (WCCA), we continued our monitoring program by deploying 50 pairs of camera traps in Hunchun Nature Reserve (HNR) to cover approximately 450 km2 of key habitat for Amur tigers and leopards. The camera trap monitoring period covered about 25,000 trap nights and resulted in about 50,000 images and videos of wildlife and human activity, of which 700 images and videos were of 10 leopards and 13 tigers. Seven of these leopards and eight of these tigers were new to our camera traps. By combining data with partners collecting data across the entirety of the park, we identified 20 different leopard individuals (9 males, 5 females, and 6 of unknown sex), and 18 different tiger individuals (5 males, 5 females, and 8 of unknown sex) in HNR.

Tigers are poached for their bones and organs, which are prized for their use in traditional medicines. A single tiger can be worth over $15,000 – more than most poor people in the region make over years. Recent conservation efforts have increased the number of wild Siberian tigers but continued efforts will be needed to ensure their survival. Can You See Me Now? - Tigers are the most boldly marked cats in the world and although they are easy to see in most zoo settings, their distinctive stripes and coloration provides the camouflage needed for a large predator in the wild. The pattern of stripes on a tigers face is as distinctive as human fingerprints – no two tigers have exactly the same stripe pattern. Classification The Amur tiger is one of 9 subspecies of tiger. Three of the 9 subspecies are extinct, and the rest are listed as endangered or critically endangered by the IUCN. Class: Mammalia Order: Carnivora Family: Felidae Genus: Panthera Species: tigris Subspecies: altaica Distribution The tiger’s traditional range is through southeastern Siberia, northeast China, the Russian Far East, and northern regions of North Korea. Habitat Snow-covered deciduous, coniferous and scrub forests in the mountains. Physical Description • Males are 9-12 feet (2.7-3.6 m) long including a two to three foot (60-90 cm) tail; females are up to 9 feet (2.7 m) long.

Unfortunately, wild ti gers, once abundant throughout Asia, now live only in small fragmented groups – mostly in protected forests, refuges, and nati onal parks. The current total populati on is esti mated at around 4,000 animals. Experts say that more than 500 ti gers are killed each year. In 1994, the United States Congress passed a law to establish the Rhinoceros and Tiger Conservati on Fund to help protect, conserve, and manage these amazing species. Since 1996, the U.S. Fish and Wildife Service has used this fund to support anti -poaching initi ati ves, development of nature reserves, wildlife surveys and monitoring, management of human-wildlife confl ict, public awareness campaigns, and other conservati on eff orts related to ti ger survival. TIGER BASICS: Size: Tigers are the largest living member of the cat family; they can be up to 12 feet in length and the largest ti gers can weigh up to 650 pounds. Lifespan: Esti mated 10-15 years. Let’s Count Tigers CENSUS OF TIGER AND LEOPARD The presence of Tiger in the forest is normally known from evidences like the animal-kill, pugmark, claw-mark on the road and tree, urine-mark on the bush, scat, mating call, normal roaring, and the alarm call by prey animals like the langur, chital or sambar. Unless the ground vegetation is thin and sparse, Tiger is as elusive as ever to permit easy sighting. It is rightly said that (in a good forest) ‘before we see the Tiger once, the Tiger must have seen us a hundred times’! Footprints (the pugmarks) are left behind as the Tiger moves on. It may not leave any other evidence! The tale-telling distinctiveness of the pugmark depends on the ground soil. A good track tells us whether it is that of a Tiger or a Leopard; a male, female or a cub; and whether a particular pugmark is that of the front or hind, and left or the right. Pugmark Tracking – Traditionally ours! The idea for using pugmark tracking for determining the numbers of Tiger in India was first given by Saroj Raj Choudhury, when he served as Senior Research Officer at the Forest Research Institute, Dehra Dun. Later, he became the founder Field Director of Similipal Tiger Reserve in 1973, and in 1983 was posthumously honoured with Padmashree.
