------LE METACLASSIFICHE 2008 DI ET / di Filippo Tagliaferri

Un altro anno è ormai passato da qualche mese e più o meno puntualmente ci ritroviamo a farne il consuntivo. La prima impressione che abbiamo avuto è che il 2008 abbia fornito alcuni titoli 'sostanziosi', su cui si è concentrata l'attenzione della maggior parte degli ascoltatori (riviste, siti o semplici votanti di ET). Salta infatti subito all'occhio, scorrendo tra le varie classifiche, la costante presenza di dischi come il terzo dei Portishead o di Dear Science dei TV On The Radio, pressoché votati, ed ai piani alti, da tutti. Si tratta, in entrambi i casi, di piacevoli conferme. Per quanto riguarda i Portishead, non ci speravamo davvero più, a dieci anni di distanza dal precedente disco e non possiamo che compiacerci del loro ottimo stato di salute artistica. Quanto ai TV On The Radio, è fuori luogo parlarne ancora come di una band nuova o emergente, trovandoci ormai di fronte al terzo disco (su tre) di alto livello.

Un ottimo risultato lo ha raccolto anche l'ultimo Nick Cave (meglio ancora su ET, ma è piaciuto molto anche alle riviste ed ai siti sparsi per il mondo che abbiamo preso come riferimento). Due dischi che invece, non tanto a sorpresa per la verità, hanno ricevuto un grande riscontro su ET, mentre la critica ufficiale li ha trascurati assai, sono l'ultimo dei REM ed il secondo di Joan As A Police Woman. Nel caso dei R.E.M., dei beniamini su queste pagine, va sottolineato anche il fatto che 'Accelerate' ha ricevuto ottime critiche al momento dell'uscita, per poi scomprarire, o quasi, dai consuntivi annuali, mentre per quanto riguarda la 'poliziotta', ricordiamo che tre anni orsono, già il suo cd di debutto aveva raggiunto le zone più alte della classifica di ET.

Si segnala anche la conferma, anche in questo caso tutta interna alla nostra rivista, di Cat Power. Va detto che spesso i critici musicali non riconoscono ai cover album (quale è 'Jukebox') posizioni molto elevate nelle classifiche di fine anno. Tra i nomi nuovi spicca l'exploit dei Fleet Foxes (bene su ET, benissimo altrove), MGMT, Hercules & Love Affair (ma non avevamo dubbi, stante le caretteristiche di queste due ultime proposte musicali) e Black Mountain. Osservando le classifiche dei siti e riviste, si nota invece la presenza, molto in alto, di alcuni 1

dischi che al contrario su ET non hanno trovato molto spazio. I casi più clamorosi sono senz'altro Bon Iver (bene o male un disco che ha girato 'poco e tardi' per entrare in classifica, qui da noi), Vampire Weekend (e qui è abbastanza strano, viste le coordinate stilistiche della band), Santogold e Deerhunter. Un caso a parte, a mio avviso, sono i Kings Of Leon. Veramente poco comprensibile l'entusiasmo, soprattutto fuori dall'Italia, che ormai negli anni suscita questa band.

Qualcuno che non frequenti la redazione di Elephant Talk o ci stia leggendo per puro caso, si domanderà chi siano mai questi Surrounded, il cui disco 'The Nautilus Years' si assesta su un 18° posto di tutto rispetto, davanti, tanto per dire, a Goldfrapp, Beck, Primal Scream, Marianne Faihfull... Ebbene, trattasi di una piccola formazione svedese dedita ad un dream-pop (leggesi: shoegazing contemporaneo) che ha più di qualche richiamo, soprattutto nell'uso della voce effettata, agli Sparklehorse. Questo è il loro primo album non rivolto al solo mercato svedese e sebbene sia stato pressoché ignorato dalle riviste italiane, si è diffuso capillarmente tra i vari redattori di Elephant Talk (stante anche la facile reperibilità di copie promozionali del cd).

Torniamo all'Italia. C'è un disco che ha meravigliato in positivo po' tutti. Amen dei Baustelle. Per rendersi conto del successo di critica per quasta sorta di 'Pulp di Montpulciano', basti pensare che se avessimo considerato nella classifica generale il loro disco (non lo abbiamo fatto, solitamente quando ci sono voti a sufficienza, come quest'anno, stiliamo una classifica di sola musica italiana) si sarebbe piazzato ben 12° nella nostra graduatoria e 25° in quella generale. Il risultato è di tutto rispetto considerando anche che quest'ultima classifica tiene conto di un gran numero di voti 'stranieri', che molto probabilmente neppure sono a conoscenza dell'esistenza dei Baustelle.

Per avere un'idea più ampia dell'impatto degli altri dischi italiani nelle classifiche generali, pensiamo che Le Luci Della Centrale Elettrica, con l'omonimo debutto, sarebbe/ro arrivato/e 32° (o 37° per ET) e gli Afterhours 59°, con il loro 'I Milanesi Ammazzano Il Sabato'. All'interno della classifica di Elephant Talk si registra anche il gradimento per il duo Il Genio (24°, sempre se fossero stati considerati insieme con i titoli di musica straniera). Il 2008 è stato dunque un anno piuttosto positivo per la musica italiana, di tutti i generi, se pensiamo che alcuni anni non siamo sati neppure in grado di stilare classifiche apposite.

Per finire, si segnala il generale cattivo stato di forma della musica di colore. Se si escludono i TV On The Radio (formazione 'mista' e comunque anomala), non troviamo nessun titolo nelle posizioni più elevate nella classifica di ET. Per le altre riviste e siti, la sola Erikah Badu riesce ad agguantare una posizione di un qualche rilievo. Ah, i dischi dal vivo sembrano essere stati aboliti. E' tutto.

--- Antonello Cacciotto:

1- Le Luci della Centrale Elettrica – Canzoni da spiaggia deturpata Il nostro numero uno 2008 è un disco che scansa le definizioni, carico di chitarre, distorsioni, incubi e racconti allucinati, voci e immagini disperate, sospiri e pensieri che cercano un senso, una via di fuga, una sopravvivenza. Storie di amori tossici e di corse a voler andar lontano per restare fermi, per non poter andarsene. Un disco italiano, prodotto da Giorgio Canali e realizzato da un ragazzo Vasco Brondi che si è inventato un nome. Le Luci della Centrale Elettrica, che è già poesia urbana, fatta di cieli plumbei e di notti atomiche, di pozzanghere e di antenne della televisione come spazzolino. Un disco che disturba ma lo fa con un’intensità che è un canto storto, inquieto, sgraziato, un disco che non può lasciare indifferenti.

2- The Gaslight Anthem – The ’59 Sound. Una miscela esplosiva: un disco rock, come ormai si fatica a produrre. Secco, asciutto, ma caldo, trascinante. Un suono quasi punk, un cantato sporco e ruvido con una carica emotiva notevole. E poi le liriche che sanno di notti infinite nel New Jersey.

3- Fleet Foxes - Fleet Foxes. Sorprendenti: gli intrecci vocali di un’intensità emozionante, un tracciato melodico mai banale, un suono caldo e sfaccettato. Il segreto resta la calibratura perfetta delle armonie vocali che lasciano senza fiato.

4- The Hold Steady – Stay Positive. Un altro centro, dopo Boys and girls in America. Un altro album potente, trascinante, che sprizza rock. Ecco come dovrebbe suonare la E Street band nel 2008: chitarre, pianoforte, hammond, ritmica ricca e quadrata, eppure una musica che suona moderna, pur affondando le sue radici nel mainstream rock di una volta.

5- Glasvegas – Glasvegas Un suono carico, quasi al limite, per un album che riesce a centrifugare i “sixties” con una produzione moderna, quasi elettronica, dilatata. Un suono avvolgente, che lascia spaesati perché non dà riferimenti, ma poi conquista con una scrittura melodica di una semplicità disarmante. E poi la canzone dell’anno: Flowers and football tips, semplicemente e spudoratamente un pezzo pop/rock perfetto.

6- Portishead – Third Quanti li abbiamo aspettati? Undici anni? Ne è valsa la pena: tirano fuori un altro incanto tempestato di preziosissimi diamanti. Se non raggiungono le vette di una volta è soltanto perché certe vette sono irraggiungibili, ma questo lavoro è davvero un contenitore che ad ogni ascolto rivela nuovi segreti.

7- Okkervil River – The Stand Ins. Veri eroi del rock/folk e dell’americana, si muovono ancora una volta dopo gli ultimi due dischi capolavoro su un tracciato che conoscono alla perfezione, e colpiscono ancora il bersaglio.

8- The War on Drugs – Wagonwheel blues L’America a stelle e strisce, e la musica americana condensata e tritata in solo disco. Si sente dentro, corretta, e rimuginata, alla fine quasi irriconoscibile, un pezzo di storia della musica USA, rivisitata e rimessa in pista per un’altra folle corsa.

9- John Mellencamp – Life, death, love and freedom Ruvido, scuro, torna a fare parlare la sua vena più profonda, più legata alle roots della canzone Americana, E lo fa con una voce ed un’ispirazione che lascia il segno, un raccontare scarno, per fraseggi semplici, a tratti accennati, ma è una pittura che trae linfa dal folk e dal rock con sapienza da maestro.

10- Rem - Accelerate Tributo ad una band che ha segnato trent’anni di musica americana. Si risollevano dopo gli ultimi episodi non brillantissimi, e lo fanno con una scelta sonora che non può non far pensare alle loro cose più elettriche, da Lifes rich pageant, a Documen,t a Monster. Qualcuno ha detto che si sono ritrovati. Sempre che si fossero persi.

11- Joshua James – The Sun is Always Brighter Una vena folk ispiratissima, a tratti sembra di sentire il primo Ben Harper. E poi una voce limpida, viva, che sorride anche quando commuove.

In diverse riviste specializzate ho trovato dei giudizi decisamente positivi in merito al 2008; mah... personalmente (purtroppo) non sono d'accordo. Onestamente però mi è saltata una pulce all'orecchio: e se magari stavolta fosse "colpa" mia? Per questo motivo vorrei limitarmi ad alcuni (più o meno) laconici commenti... Keane PERFECT SIMMETRY - Una delusione, una tremenda delusione... una band che ho vigorosamente sostenuto sin dall'eccellente esordio (HOPES AND FEARS), che ho decisamente apprezzato 14 anche nel bis (UNDER THE IRON SEA), è stata purtroppo "rovinata" dall'infelice uscita di questo famigerato terzo album... Un disco guidato da un singolo fotocopia di altre loro precedenti brani e completato da altre canzoni sui generis, anonime. Si riconoscono loro come band, però non si riesce a memorizzare (positivamente) una sola canzone, peccato. Lo stesso brutto "effetto" che mi fece il quarto album dei Turin Brakes (DARK ON FIRE), purtroppo. Hercules & Love Affair - Carino il singolo, con Antony in un contesto un po' più movimentato del suo solito, però... mah... il disco mi pare si concluda lì, gli altri brani li trovo piuttosto anonimi, poco saporiti. Portishead THIRD - Qui si parte in salita, personalmente non ho mai stravisto neppure per DUMMY... Questa nuova proposta mi appare ancora più cupa, ci provo, ma credo che non rientrino tra le mie tazze da tè (come usiamo dire tra di noi ETiani). Notwist THE DEVIL, YOU + ME - Carini, si ascoltano volentieri. Si riconosce la band che ha pubblicato NEON GOLDEN, però in qualsiasi critica obiettiva credo sia impossibile omettere il dato di fatto che il precedente album era qualitativamente due spanne sopra l'ultimo uscito. David Byrne & Brian Eno EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS - Che dire... singolo strepitoso nel suo genere (siamo dalle parti di "Spinning away", brano contenuto in WRONG WAY UP album uscito nel 1990 a nome Brian Eno/John Cale), peccato che la maggioranza degli altri brani siano arrangiati in chiave semi- country, ballata americana, abbassando drasticamente la media globale della valutazione dell'album. Mgmt ORACULAR SPECTACULAR - Eccoci qua, una fresca ventata di "novità", un disco ottimista (perlomeno nei suoni, nelle atmosfere estive). Se dovessi indicare un disco dell'anno sarei fortemente tentato da questi MGMT, magari bloccato unicamente dalle remore nei confronti di una musica così "radiofonica", così spudoratamente, intenzionalmente "fm"... Però i brani ci sono, entrano in testa, e sono decisamente piacevoli, da party on the beach! Buon divertimento!! Coldplay VIVA LA VIDA - Altro "recente" gruppo facente parte dei miei beniamini... PARACHUTES fu il colpo di fulmine, mentre personalmente non ho una grande stima di A RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD, che trovo molto fotocopia dell'esordio. Poi c'è stato X & Y , ed anche qui (in stile controcorrente) ho globalmente gradito l'album (da molti ritenuto la'nello debole del terzetto). Poi VIVA LA VIDA, che avevo snobbato fino a poco tempo fa a causa dei primi singoli che ho trovato piuttosto scialbi (Violet Hill & Viva la vida). Infine... mi è arrivata la versione acustica di Lost, per i miei gusti uno dei brani più belli dell'annata appena trascorsa. Quindi mi sono comprato la versione extended di VIVA LA VIDA, quella con l'EP PROSPEKT MARCH, e devo dire che il disco mi piace. Le sonorità si scostano dai loro marchi di fabbrica (il suono della chitarra in primis) e diversi brani non sono niente male, promossi. R.e.m. ACCELERATE - Altro mah... disco anche genuino se si vuole, sicuramente rock oriented, con sonorità che rimandano a MONSTER, tanto per citare un disco di riferimento nella loro discografia; eppure... eppure anche qui proseguo controcorrente, e continuo a preferire il precedente, bistrattato AROUND THE SUN (che, a mio avviso, contiene alcuni brani molto belli: Make it all okay, Leaving NY, ecc.) Surrounded THE NAUTILUS YEARS - Coordinate di riferimento: Sparklehorse & Flaming Lips. Magari una decina d'anni dopo, la sostanza però cambia poco; se non che ricordo meglio e più volentieri i gruppi di riferimento. Sapete qual'è il disco che ho ascoltato più spesso quest'anno? PACIFIC OCEAN BLUE di Dennis Wilson, la pecora "nera" dei Beach Boys. Un disco che è originariamente uscito nel 1977, all'alba del punk, un disco pieno di brani che ancora oggi farebbero le scarpe alla maggioranza della concorrenza che circola nel genere pop-rock. Non mi resta che "aspettare" fiduciosamente il 2009... (still waiting, still waiting, still waiting...) Comunque sia, buon ascolto a tutti, ad ognuno la sua tazza da tè!

Nel rileggere questa classifica, mi rendo conto che per la maggior parte è composta da musicisti con una grande esperienza alle spalle: i Dead C suonano da oltre vent'anni, Portishead e Deus da quindici, i Mercury Rev sono in circolazione dai primi anni Novanta e personaggi come Nick Cave e Mark Lanegan non sono certo dei novellini. Per tacere di Wire, Primal Scream, Verve. Per quanto mi riguarda, insomma, il 2008 è stato un anno di grandi conferme, in cui ho reincontrato con piacere molti vecchi amici. Il primo posto spetta però a un gruppo relativamente giovane, i Tv on the Radio, che riescono nell'arduo compito di migliorare il già mirabile Return to Cookie Mountain, mentre è solo l'eccessiva lunghezza a far scivolare l'ottimo Different Shade of Beauty (secondo disco dei Tearwave) dal podio. I veterani Dead C realizzano probabilmente il loro miglior lavoro dei tempi di Tusk (1997), e i Portishead riescono a non deludere nonostante le enormi aspettative (ed è un mezzo miracolo). Sempre all'altezza i Sigur Ros, mai così vicini al pop, e trascinante Hercules and Love Affair, album che, dopo le iniziali perplessità, mi ha convinto sempre più. Segnalazione obbligatoria per la bellissima voce di Joan as Police Woman e per l'oscuro esordio di Have a Nice Life (un nome che è un ossimoro, quando accostato al suono di Deathconsciousness).

------ANEDDOTI DI UN MUSICOFILO (ABOUT LOST!) / di Marco Misuri

Nella mia “vita di musicofilo” ci sono stati svariati periodi di crisi, periodi in cui ho avuto più difficoltà ad avvicinarmi alla musica del momento, periodi in cui regolarmente mi rifugio nell’ascolto dei classici che ognuno di noi (musicofili) custodisce gelosamente per traghettare le zone oscure.

Le suddette crisi in genere si concludono con l’arrivo di una novità o comunque di un brano che mi scuote dal torpore in cui temporaneamente (fisiologicamente?) periodicamente cado.

In questo 2008, a parte la felice e spensierata parentesi degli MGMT, il richiamo al tempo presente per me è dovuto grazie ad una particolare versione di un brano dei Coldplay. Il brano in questione s’intitola “Lost!” e fa parte della loro ultima fatica: VIVA LA VIDA.

Nel cd in questione però il brano si basa su un organo piuttosto pesante sostenuto da una ritmica altrettanto consistente; in questa versione il brano è gradevole, ma non è che mi faccia impazzire… poi, nei mesi seguenti l’uscita dell’album, la scoperta: la versione acustica.

In questa versione la parte dell’organo viene assolta da un pianoforte, la batteria scompare e il canto riconquista la sua posizione dominante rivoluzionando il risultato finale: una perla. Un brano semplice, melodico, emozionante; di quelli che ti fanno sognare, dovunque ti trovi.

I singoli precedentemente estratti non mi avevano entusiasmato e, benché possa sostenere di essere un fan dei Coldplay (ad oggi ho tutti i loro album e anche diversi singoli), mi ero astenuto dall’acquistare VIVA LA VIDA, fino a che…

Nei giorni scorsi inizio ad adocchiare una nuova versione di VIVA LA VIDA, una versione “de-luxe” con tanto di aggiunta dell’EP PROSPEKT’S MARCH, una di quelle cose che fanno impazzire noi musicofili, soprattutto nei casi in cui abbiamo già comprato la versione originale… Beh… la faccio corta: all’ennesimo ascolto di “Lost!” (acoustic) mi decido a comprare la new edition spinto dalla presenza di una seconda Lost+ nel bonus cd, che ritengo essere la versione acustica in questione appunto.

Beh… generalmente sono un tipo tranquillo… ma porca #!*§%#!! Ma come si fa? “Lost+” contenuta nel secondo cd è solo un remix con tanto di rap (che fatico a digerire) della già presente versione con l’organo, della versione acustica nessuna traccia… Criminali! Ma si può perseverare in queste manfrine di marketing? Mah…

Intanto le radio però l’hanno scoperta ed iniziano a trasmetterla… Ed io l’ho recuperata tramite la solita rete di amicizie, grazie HD. E’ bellissima.
