  • Finn Ballard: No Trespassing: the Post-Millennial
Page 15 No Trespassing: The postmillennial roadhorror movie Finn Ballard Since the turn of the century, there has been released throughout America and Europe a spate of films unified by the same basic plotline: a group of teenagers go roadtripping into the wilderness, and are summarily slaughtered by locals. These films may collectively be termed ‘roadhorror’, due to their blurring of the aesthetic of the road movie with the tension and gore of horror cinema. The thematic of this subgenre has long been established in fiction; from the earliest oral lore, there has been evident a preoccupation with the potential terror of inadvertently trespassing into a hostile environment. This was a particular concern of the folkloric Warnmärchen or ‘warning tale’ of medieval Europe, which educated both children and adults of the dangers of straying into the wilderness. Pioneers carried such tales to the fledging United States, but in a nation conceptualised by progress, by the shining of light upon darkness and the pushing back of frontiers, the fear of the wilderness was diminished in impact. In more recent history, the development of the automobile consolidated the joint American traditions of mobility and discovery, as the leisure activity of the road trip became popular. The wilderness therefore became a source of fascination rather than fear, and the road trip became a transcendental voyage of discovery and of escape from the urban, made fashionable by writers such as Jack Kerouac and by those filmmakers such as Dennis Hopper ( Easy Rider, 1969) who influenced the evolution of the American road movie.

  • Logging Into Horror's Closet
Logging into Horror’s Closet: Gay Fans, the Horror Film and Online Culture Adam Christopher Scales Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies September 2015 © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. Abstract Harry Benshoff has boldly proclaimed that ‘horror stories and monster movies, perhaps more than any other genre, actively invoke queer readings’ (1997, p. 6). For Benshoff, gay audiences have forged cultural identifications with the counter-hegemonic figure of the ‘monster queer’ who disrupts the heterosexual status quo. However, beyond identification with the monstrous outsider, there is at present little understanding of the interpretations that gay fans mobilise around different forms and features of horror and the cultural connections they establish with other horror fans online. In addressing this gap, this thesis employs a multi-sited netnographic method to study gay horror fandom. This holistic approach seeks to investigate spaces created by and for gay horror fans, in addition to their presence on a mainstream horror site and a gay online forum. In doing so, this study argues that gay fans forge deep emotional connections with horror that links particular textual features to the construction and articulation of their sexual and fannish identities. In developing the concept of ‘emotional capital’ that establishes intersubjective recognition between gay fans, this thesis argues that this capital is destabilised in much larger spaces of fandom where gay fans perform the successful ‘doing of being’ a horror fan (Hills, 2005).

  • Kelsey Grammer Asks Seperated Wife to the Tonys
Kelsey Grammer Asks Seperated Wife to the Tonys According to sources from the New York Post, Kelsey Grammer asked wife Camille Donatacci to accompany him at this year’s Tony Awards – even though he dumped her via telephone a month ago. Donatacci stayed at the London Hotel, and made public appearances with the Frasier star during her stay, but the actor would not let her into his apartment, or discuss any means of reconciliation, said the sources. Donatacci, Grammer’s third wife, filed for divorce in June, citing “irreconcilable differences.” She is seeking custody of their daughter, Mason, 8 and son Jude, 5. How do you face your ex in public? Cupid’s Advice: Breakups can be painful – what happens if you run into your ex while you’re out? Cupid has some tips on maintaining your grace: 1. Expect it: While you shouldn’t be paranoid about seeing your ex, realize that it can happen, especially if you have the same circle of friends, or live in neighboring areas. Acknowledge your feelings after the break-up – you don’t want to lose your cool, especially in public. 2. Talk smart: It’s always good to have a few conversation topics in mind in case you see your ex, so you don’t start rehashing the past. Don’t bring up inside jokes or shared past experiences; your ex might assume you aren’t over your relationship. 3. Go ahead – look good! Be confident in yourself. If you appear happy and upbeat, your former partner will think you’ve moved on (and it won’t look like you’re still wallowing – even if you are).

  • Drew Carey Jumps to Top of List As the Nation's Favorite
The Harris Poll A Service of Harris Interactive THE HARRIS POLL #75 FOR RELEASE: DECEMBER 15, 1999 DREW CAREY JUMPS TO TOP OF LIST AS THE NATION’S FAVORITE TV PERSONALITY He moves ahead of Oprah Winfrey (#2), Bill Cosby (#3), Jerry Seinfeld (#4) and Kelsey Grammar (#5). _____________________________________________________ by Humphrey Taylor While primetime game shows such as Greed and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire seem to be captivating America these days, the stars of sitcoms and talk shows are most popular. Drew Carey tops the list of the nation’s favorite TV personalities, and Oprah Winfrey ranks a close second. These are the results of a Harris Poll of 1,011 adults surveyed by telephone between October 27 and November 2, 1999. Both sitcoms and talk shows provide America with a comforting diversion from reality. Both also offer well-publicized celebrities. This may explain why stars of these shows, and only these shows, comprise the list of America’s top 10 TV stars. While Drew Carey is #1, he is followed by several of his sitcom colleagues: Bill Cosby (#3), Jerry Seinfeld (#4), Kelsey Grammer (#5), Jennifer Aniston (#6), Tim Allen (#7), and Helen Hunt (#9). Interestingly, no stars from television’s most popular dramas such as Touched by an Angel or Law and Order rank anywhere on the list. Harris Interactive Inc. 111 Fifth Avenue NYC (212) 539-9600 In addition, the stars of TV talk shows, while rumored to be on the decline, capture several of the top spots: Oprah Winfrey (#2), Rosie O’Donnell (#8), Jerry Springer and Johnny Carson (tied for #10).

Jeepers Creepers by Victor Salva Revised Draft 8/21/99 WGA Registration # 757904 EXT. LONELY COUNTRY ROAD. DAY. An empty ribbon of asphalt. Winding through an endless stretch of meadows and farmlands. For a long moment, silence. Then, a distant speck. A car moving toward us. A SOUND APPROACHING WITH IT NOW. A RADIO BLARING AND TWO RAISED VOICES SINGING WITH IT. TRISHA JAMES is a beautiful girl of twenty. Hair blowing in the breeze of the open passenger window. She sings out, banging the side of the car with her hand. Keeping the beat of the boisterous rock song. She sings with younger brother DARRY. Nineteen. Attractive like his sister. Lighter hair. Softer looking. Striking eyes. Voice raised as they speed along. Trying to swallow up the road as quickly as possible. The backseat has a couple of suitcases and a large basket wrapped in a garbage bag. The song comes to an end as Darry flies through an abandoned intersection. TRISH That was a stop sign.
