  • Finn Ballard: No Trespassing: the Post-Millennial
Page 15 No Trespassing: The postmillennial roadhorror movie Finn Ballard Since the turn of the century, there has been released throughout America and Europe a spate of films unified by the same basic plotline: a group of teenagers go roadtripping into the wilderness, and are summarily slaughtered by locals. These films may collectively be termed ‘roadhorror’, due to their blurring of the aesthetic of the road movie with the tension and gore of horror cinema. The thematic of this subgenre has long been established in fiction; from the earliest oral lore, there has been evident a preoccupation with the potential terror of inadvertently trespassing into a hostile environment. This was a particular concern of the folkloric Warnmärchen or ‘warning tale’ of medieval Europe, which educated both children and adults of the dangers of straying into the wilderness. Pioneers carried such tales to the fledging United States, but in a nation conceptualised by progress, by the shining of light upon darkness and the pushing back of frontiers, the fear of the wilderness was diminished in impact. In more recent history, the development of the automobile consolidated the joint American traditions of mobility and discovery, as the leisure activity of the road trip became popular. The wilderness therefore became a source of fascination rather than fear, and the road trip became a transcendental voyage of discovery and of escape from the urban, made fashionable by writers such as Jack Kerouac and by those filmmakers such as Dennis Hopper ( Easy Rider, 1969) who influenced the evolution of the American road movie.

  • Logging Into Horror's Closet
Logging into Horror’s Closet: Gay Fans, the Horror Film and Online Culture Adam Christopher Scales Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of East Anglia School of Art, Media and American Studies September 2015 © This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. Abstract Harry Benshoff has boldly proclaimed that ‘horror stories and monster movies, perhaps more than any other genre, actively invoke queer readings’ (1997, p. 6). For Benshoff, gay audiences have forged cultural identifications with the counter-hegemonic figure of the ‘monster queer’ who disrupts the heterosexual status quo. However, beyond identification with the monstrous outsider, there is at present little understanding of the interpretations that gay fans mobilise around different forms and features of horror and the cultural connections they establish with other horror fans online. In addressing this gap, this thesis employs a multi-sited netnographic method to study gay horror fandom. This holistic approach seeks to investigate spaces created by and for gay horror fans, in addition to their presence on a mainstream horror site and a gay online forum. In doing so, this study argues that gay fans forge deep emotional connections with horror that links particular textual features to the construction and articulation of their sexual and fannish identities. In developing the concept of ‘emotional capital’ that establishes intersubjective recognition between gay fans, this thesis argues that this capital is destabilised in much larger spaces of fandom where gay fans perform the successful ‘doing of being’ a horror fan (Hills, 2005).

Jeepers Creepers by Victor Salva Revised Draft 8/21/99 WGA Registration # 757904 EXT. LONELY COUNTRY ROAD. DAY. An empty ribbon of asphalt. Winding through an endless stretch of meadows and farmlands. For a long moment, silence. Then, a distant speck. A car moving toward us. A SOUND APPROACHING WITH IT NOW. A RADIO BLARING AND TWO RAISED VOICES SINGING WITH IT. TRISHA JAMES is a beautiful girl of twenty. Hair blowing in the breeze of the open passenger window. She sings out, banging the side of the car with her hand. Keeping the beat of the boisterous rock song. She sings with younger brother DARRY. Nineteen. Attractive like his sister. Lighter hair. Softer looking. Striking eyes. Voice raised as they speed along. Trying to swallow up the road as quickly as possible. The backseat has a couple of suitcases and a large basket wrapped in a garbage bag. The song comes to an end as Darry flies through an abandoned intersection. TRISH That was a stop sign. DARRY You're kidding, right? TRISH In your car I'd be kidding. DARRY You think we're actually gonna run into anyone else on this road? Relax! (turns the radio louder, shouts over it) Enjoy the countryside! The ANGRY MUSIC WAILING and the car blasting down the tranquil road. We watch as it heads for what seems like infinity. EXT. • Aggression Towards Children in Homoerotic Horror
Aggression towards children in homoerotic horror Scott Lewis Bachelor of Arts Macquarie University Department of English October 2014 This thesis is presented for the degree of Master of Research Abstract My thesis analyses depictions of aggression towards children in homoerotic horror. The texts I consider are Dracula by Bram Stoker, “The Turn of the Screw” by Henry James, and the films A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge, Jeepers Creepers and Jeepers Creepers 2. I demonstrate that these texts suggest homophobia conditioned the Oscar Wilde statutory rapes committed. My thesis uses a Foucaultian conceptual framework to examine my texts implicit depictions of the discourses and institutions that they suggest construct homosexuals so they engage in violent acts such as child molestation. My methodology entails examination of correlations between my texts and sources of historical context. This approach illuminates my texts‟ subtextual depictions of homosexuality, child molestation and paedophilia, as has my appropriation of techniques and arguments from previous Queer Theory criticism of my texts. Queer Theorists have ignored or only derided violence against children in homoerotic horror without acknowledging that depictions of such acts provide insightful reflections on how homosexuality, homophobia, paedophilia and child molestation have been culturally associated. My analysis of implicit paedophilia has incorporated James Kincaid‟s Foucaultian theorisation of paedophilia. Kincaid argues that paedophilia is a construct that can manifest in illusory forms, an insight that compliments my examination of homoeroticism. I certify that the work in this thesis entitled “Aggression towards children in homoerotic horror” has not previously been submitted for a degree nor has it been submitted as part of requirements for a degree to any other university or institution other than Macquarie University.

  • Dan Millman's Way of the Peaceful Warrior Has Become One of the Most Beloved Spiritual Sagas of Our Time
Dan Millman's Way of the Peaceful Warrior has become one of the most beloved spiritual sagas of our time. Shared among friends and families, this two million-copy word-of-mouth bestseller has inspired men and women of all ages in twenty languages worldwide. After 18 years in print, Millman's story came to the big screen as Peaceful Warrior, a major motion picture from Universal and Lionsgate. Written and directed by Victor Salva, Peaceful Warrior stars Nick Nolte (Hotel Rwanda, U Turn), Scott Mechlowicz (Eurotrip, Mean Creek), Amy Smart (Just Friends, The Butterfly Effect), and Ashton Holmes (A History of Violence). Despite his success, college student and world-champion athlete Dan Millman (played by Scott Mechlowicz) is haunted by a feeling that something is missing from his life. Awakened one night by dark dreams, he wanders into an all-night gas station where a chance encounter with the enigmatic Socrates (Nick Nolte) starts Dan on a spiritual odyssey, which throws his perfect but shallow life into total disarray. With a unique blend of Eastern philosophy and Western training, Socrates' insight and wisdom help Dan recover from a devastating motorcycle accident and takes Dan on a journey that tests the limits of his mind, body, and spirit. Discovering that he has much to learn and even more to leave behind, Millman's story is a moving tale about the power of human will. A classic tale, told with heart and humor, Millman speaks to the peaceful warrior in each of us and offers a chance to rediscover life's larger meaning and purpose.
