  • THE COLLECTED POEMS of HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam
1 THE COLLECTED POEMS OF HENRIK IBSEN Translated by John Northam 2 PREFACE With the exception of a relatively small number of pieces, Ibsen’s copious output as a poet has been little regarded, even in Norway. The English-reading public has been denied access to the whole corpus. That is regrettable, because in it can be traced interesting developments, in style, material and ideas related to the later prose works, and there are several poems, witty, moving, thought provoking, that are attractive in their own right. The earliest poems, written in Grimstad, where Ibsen worked as an assistant to the local apothecary, are what one would expect of a novice. Resignation, Doubt and Hope, Moonlight Voyage on the Sea are, as their titles suggest, exercises in the conventional, introverted melancholy of the unrecognised young poet. Moonlight Mood, To the Star express a yearning for the typically ethereal, unattainable beloved. In The Giant Oak and To Hungary Ibsen exhorts Norway and Hungary to resist the actual and immediate threat of Prussian aggression, but does so in the entirely conventional imagery of the heroic Viking past. From early on, however, signs begin to appear of a more personal and immediate engagement with real life. There is, for instance, a telling juxtaposition of two poems, each of them inspired by a female visitation. It is Over is undeviatingly an exercise in romantic glamour: the poet, wandering by moonlight mid the ruins of a great palace, is visited by the wraith of the noble lady once its occupant; whereupon the ruins are restored to their old splendour.

But women’s roles in comics have often been diminished as they become victims, damsels in distress, and sidekicks. This thesis explores the problems that female characters often face in comic books, but it also shows the positive representation that new creators have introduced over the years.

  • Planescape: Torment Guide
Presents an Unofficial Guide to: Planescape: Torment By Samuel Brown Baker, II Brought to you by: Introduction This is not a complete walkthrough of Planescape: Torment. Short of playing the game several times as different classes, exhaustively going through every dialog path with every possible set of stats, spending months of time to do so, there’s no way to do that. This is how I played through the game, step by step. I won't even say it is the best way. I sometimes missed and forgot things and had to come back to them. So do what you want to do, play how you want to play. It's your game. The conversation paths that I took playing the game are presented here as a narrative and will not necessarily match the choices on screen or the responses word for word and frequently differ in tense. They are also truncated and condensed where I could do so without spoiling the flow of the tale. However in every case where a conversational choice is made I included key phrases so that someone reading along could easily tell which path I followed. There are conversations that took place that I did not include because they offered no new information or experience, or were short and without branches. Planescape is the most amazing computer role-playing game I've ever had the pleasure of playing. In many respects I feel it is the first CRPG that is really worthy of the name. I found myself thinking about how I felt about people and actions in the course of play, being drawn further into the game and the persona of my character the longer I played.

  • Captain America, Watergate, and the Falcon- Rediscovering The
Ahmed, Michael Captain America, Watergate and the Falcon Captain America, Watergate, and the Falcon: Rediscovering the American Dream? Michael Ahmed Introduction The comic book superhero Captain America, aka. Steve Rogers, made his first appearance in Captain America Comics #1, cover dated March 1941, published by Timely Comics, the predecessor to the Marvel Comics Group. Although America had not entered the war, Captain America’s creators Jack Kirby and Joe Simon suggested to Martin Goodman, the publisher of Timely Comics, that their new superhero ‘do battle with the Nazis’, to which Goodman ‘enthusiastically agreed’ – the cover of the very first issue depicted the superhero punching Hitler on the jaw: ‘Smashing Thru, Captain America came face to face with Hitler….’ (Wright 2008: 76). At a time when popular superheroes like Superman and Batman were fighting aliens, outlandish super-villains or grotesque mobsters, Kirby and Simon were committed to showing Captain America’s war time exploits. For example in their second issue, Captain America and Bucky, his superhero teenage sidekick, infiltrated a concentration camp in the Black Forest, and once again came face to face with Hitler. Subsequent issues with titles like ‘Trapped in the Nazi Stronghold’, ‘Blitzkrieg in Berlin’, and ‘Tojo’s Terror Masters’ give a flavour of Captain America’s crime fighting career at this time. Captain America was not only a potent comic book symbol of American armed forces ready to fight against fascism but more importantly, as Kirby later recalled, ‘he symbolized the American Dream […] Captain America was an outpouring of my own patriotism’ (Wright 2008: 76). This paper will primarily focus on comic book writer Steve Englehart’s tenure on the comic book during the early 1970s, and in particular a storyline that reinterpreted the real-life Watergate scandal.

  • Jason Tondro: "ENG 140J: the Superhero Narrative"
ENG 140J: The Superhero Narrative Jason Tondro After completing my Ph.D., but before finding a permanent posi- tion at the College of Coastal Georgia, I had the good fortune to ad- junct for a time in the English department of my alma mater, the University of California, Riverside. I describe adjuncting as "good fortune" because, despite the terrible working conditions of most ad- juncts across the country, UCR is blessed with both a union and a creative, sympathetic chair of the English Department. The former worked to ensure a living wage for adjuncts, while the second, Dr. Deborah Willis, understood that in order for a Ph.D. graduate to find a tenure-track position, that individual needs to have designed and taught upper-division courses. Dr. Willis was also sympathetic to the popularity of comics and graphic novels, and she knew from my dis- sertation and years of coursework that superhero comics were my particular field. I was also just coming off teaching a successful class on "Comics and Graphic Novels in America and Britain." Further, UCR had and—thanks to the hard work of librarians like Melissa Conway and faculty like Rob Latham— continues to have the Eaton Collection, a wonderful resource of science fiction, fantasy, and dystopian fiction, which also happens to include about 70,000 comics. Thus it was that, in early 2011, I was asked if I would like to teach a second upper division English course on comics, and of course, I enthusiastically agreed. The course number I was assigned was English 140J: Modes of Narrative.
