Her untimely departure in May 2018 left the publication project in progress and we were invited to take up where Professor Kwiatkowska had to finish. Mikołaj Deckert Monika Kocot Aleksandra Majdzińska-Koczorowicz Mikołaj Deckert, Monika Kocot, Aleksandra Majdzińska-Koczorowicz University of Łódź https://doi.org/10.18778/8220-191-8.01 Moving between Modes – Intersemioticity, Translation and Interdisciplinarity What can be termed “intersemiotic translation” has functioned as an exciting subject of inquiry but the line of work is still in its forming stage. Therefore, and for reasons that will be partly given below, there is clearly a need for more research but also critically for the existing research findings to be integrated cross-disciplinarily as well as systematised. Partly given the gradable matching of terms, and because of the variable scope of themes under scrutiny, the term used in the current volume’s subtitle – “intersemiotic translation” – does not need to be 13 explicitly employed for a research effort or output to be tackling topics with close affinity to the ones covered here. With that in mind, some of the relevant publications will range from papers (Clüver 1989; O’Halloran, Tan and Wignell 2016) and edited books (Oittinen, Ketola and Garavini 2017; Salmose and Elleström 20201) to single-author monographs (Sager Eidt 2008; Pârlog 2019). Along those lines, to contextualise the current book, it should be highlighted that the research presented here ties in with an array of other vibrant subfields. One will be multimodality,2 extensively researched for example within the paradigm of cognitive linguistics (Dancygier and Sweetser 2012; Sanz 2015). Another is audio description (cf. e.g. Remael, Reviers and Vercauteren 2014; Matamala and Orero 2016), functioning more and more prominently as a mode of media accessibility provision, therefore proving that research of the type documented in the current volume can have significant societal implications. 1 Notably, this volume was published in Routledge’s book series devoted specifically to multimodality. 2 Professor Kwiatkowska acknowledges that “(w)hile mono-modal research is the tradition in academic study, intermodal or cross modal research is its much younger sister, and the contributors to this volume still have a chance to set some new standards as pioneers in this enterprise”. These words remain true even though some time has passed since the claim was originally formulated. Mikołaj Deckert, Monika Kocot, Aleksandra Majdzińska-Koczorowicz In light of the explanation provided in this volume’s introductory note, Professor Alina Kwiatkowska managed to draft fragments of what she intended to include in the book’s opening. The current text therefore uses some of those passages to further acknowledge Professor Kwiatkowska’s being the impetus behind this publication. To begin with, the original editor remarks as follows: The present collection of papers was inspired by the international conference on Intersemiotic Translation held at the University of Łódź in 2013. Organized by the Institute of English Studies, it brought together many enthusiastic participants, who gathered to discuss the issues that many traditional scholars would consider to be niche and rather exotic. The volume includes a selection of papers from that conference, complemented by some additional contributions. While the line-up of contributors is slightly altered compared to that of 2013, due to practical reasons, it remains a valid point that the authors: include linguists, literary scholars, and media

Rao) Twenty out of twenty-six of Andrea Camilleri’s detective Montalbano novels feature three motifs related to the mafia. First, although the mafia is not necessarily the main subject of the narratives, mafioso behavior and communication are present in all novels through both mafia and non-mafia-affiliated characters and dialogue. Second, within the narratives there is a distinction between the old and the new generations of the mafia, and a preference for the old mafia ways. Last, the mafia is illustrated as the usual suspect in everyday crime, consequentially diverting attention and accountability away from government authorities. Few critics have focused on Camilleri’s representations of the mafia and their literary significance in mafia and detective fiction. The purpose of the present study is to cast light on these three motifs through a close reading and analysis of the detective Montalbano novels, lending a new twist to the genre of detective fiction.

The artist often begins the creation of the piece by meditating, or falls into a meditative state while making the piece. On the other end of the process, the viewer can use the minimal nature of the artwork to guide their meditation, or after casually viewing the work may slip into an unintentional state of meditation. MINIMALIST PAINTING IS THE PLACE TO BEGIN MEDITATION THROUGH ART. CIRCA’s current exhibition depth of [color] field focuses on minimal, monochromatic, color field paintings that facilitate this kind of looking or mindful observation­­—looking into a piece, rather than at it. The very nature of minimal artwork allows the viewer to more easily move into a meditative state, where reality fades and all that remains is the observer and the painting. Without a specific visual subject or topic, the mind is much more open, unencumbered, and blank while viewing. The deep, saturated color of pieces like Brad Durham’s Without Shadows pull the viewer in and guide their eye deep into its textured layers. While other surfaces, like the subtle shifts and perspective-bending color transitions in Lindsy Halleckson’s Silent Search series, make a space for the eye to truly rest, almost as if out of focus. " It seemed to me that the interrelation between these two sides: order in nature on the one side, and the human condition on the other, was the undefinable drama to be grasped, dealt with and communicated by me. - Franciszka Themerson, Bi-abstract Pictures, 1957 l’étrangère is delighted to present a solo exhibition of paintings, drawings and calligrammes by Franciszka Themerson - a seminal figure in the Polish pre-war avant-garde. She developed her unique pictorial language during the shifting years of pre- and post-war Europe, having settled in Britain in 1943. Together with her husband, writer, poet and filmmaker, Stefan Themerson, she was involved with experimental film and avant-garde publishing. Her personal domain, however, focused on painting, drawing, theatre sets and costume design. This exhibition brings together Franciszka’s three paintings completed in 1972 and a selection of drawings, dated from 1955 to 1986, which demonstrate the breadth of her work. ! The paintings: Piétons Apocalypse, A Person I Know and Coil Totem, act as anchors in the exhibition, while the drawings demonstrate the variety of motifs recurring throughout her work. The act of drawing and the key role of the line remain a constant throughout her practice. The images are characterised by a fluidity of line, rhythmic composition and the humorous depiction of everyday life.

It focuses primarily on three poetic and multi-genre volumes published after the political turn of 1989, namely: Mother Departs (Matka Odchodzi) (1999), professor’s knife (nożyk profesora) (2001), and Buy a Pig in a Poke: work in progress (Kup kota w worku: work in progress) (2008). The abovementioned works are chosen as exemplars of the writer’s authorial strategies / modes of reading praxis, prescribed by Różewicz for his ideal audience. These strategies simultaneously reveal the poet himself as a reader (of his own texts and the works of other authors). This study defines an author’s late style as a response to the cognitive and aesthetic evaluation of one’s life’s work, artistic legacy, and metaphysical angst of mortality. Różewicz’s late works are characterized by a tension between recognition and reconciliation to closure, and difficulty with it and/or opposition to it. Authorial construction of lyrical subjectivity as a reader, and modes of textual construction are the central questions under analysis. This study examines both, Tadeusz Różewicz as a reader, and the authorial strategies/ modes he creates to guide the reading praxis of the authorial audience.

THE PROBLEMATIZATION OF THE TRIAD STYLE-GENRE- LANGUAGE IN THE DIDACTIC APPROACH OF THE DISCIPLINE THE HISTORY OF MUSIC Loredana Viorica Iațeșen18 Abstract: Conventional mentality, according to which, in the teaching activities carried out during the courses of History of Music, the approach of the triad style-genre-language is performed under restrictions and in most cases in a superficial manner, the professor dealing with the usual general correlations (information regarding the epoch, biography and activity of the creator, affiliation of the musician to a certain culture of origin, the classification of the opus under discussion chronologically in the context of the composer’s work) falls into a traditional perspective on the discipline brought to our attention, a perspective that determines, following the processes of periodical or final assessment, average results and a limited feedback from students. For these reasons, it is necessary to use the modern methods of approaching the discipline, new teaching strategies in the comments and correlations on scientific content, so that the problematization of the style-genre-language triad in didactic approach of the discipline The History of Music, to generate optimal results in specific teaching and assessment activities. Musicological perspective In our opinion, the teaching approach of the triad Style-Genre-Language during the courses of history of music involves a systematization of the most relevant titles in the musicological documentation, in order to establish some key-elements in the following study.
