Elmvale Maple Syrup Festival Midhurst Pharmacy had its grand opening May 3 Volunteers are essential to any festival and Elmvale Maple Syrup is no exception. Without the dedication and commitment of our valuable volunteers, support from Springwater Township, local business, neighbours, residents and particularly our guests we wouldn't be where we are today. The 49th annual is behind us. Once again despite the weather we persevered and greeted our guests with enthusiasm and friendly hometown hospitality. Before we turn our attention to next year, may we first extend our appreciation to the community and all our volunteer helpers for their combined efforts in putting this day together. Along with sincere thanks to our Sponsors and Partners whose financial support contributes to the success of this community fundraising event especially Elmvale for their generous donation to our Pancake House. ASSEMBLING THE PERFECT CHEESE PARTY TRAY: Select several cheese varieties with contrasting flavors and textures. For example Camembert, Gorgonzola, Havarti, Colby and Pepato. Labeling each type of cheese for guests adds a friendly touch. For small groups, allow family and friends to cut directly from a cheese wedge or chunk. For larger groups, serve cubes, sticks and squares that have been cut out ahead of time. Cheese and deli platters are easy with pre-sliced cheeses. For a festive sliced cheese platter, cut out shapes with cookie cutters. Save leftover pieces for use on pizza or in other recipes. Golf is Hitting Schools in Springwater ♠ QJ2 E-W Vulnerable ♥ KJT2 South West North East ♦ Q43 1♣ Pass 1♥ Pass ♣ J63 2NT Pass 3NT All Pass ♠ 963 North ♠ T85 In a rubber bridge or team game, this ♥ 74 West East ♥ A8653 ♦ KJ865 ♦ A7 would be a pretty dull deal, with N-S ♣ 984 Declarer ♣ T72 making 10 or 11 tricks in about 30 ♠ AK74 seconds flat. But in a duplicate bridge ♥ Q9 game, where overtricks are well ♦ T92 rewarded, this dull deal suddenly ♣ AKQ5 becomes most interesting!

When this deal was played, all the West players led a Diamond to East’s Ace, and a Diamond was returned, South playing the Two on the first trick, followed by the Nine. The West players knew that, if East had two remaining Diamonds, he would have returned the higher one at Trick 2. Therefore, Declarer had the missing Ten, and there was no point in ducking the second Diamond, he had to take his King while he still could. The defense won the ♥A later and it was just 10 tricks for Declarer.

But at one table Declarer created an illusion by playing the Diamond Nine and Ten on the first two tricks. Now West had a chance to go wrong as, in this case, the missing Diamond was the Two. In West’s mind, unless Declarer was being diabolically devious (which we know to be the case!), the missing Two was surely with East. So West ducked the second Diamond and sat back, patiently waiting for East to get in and fire back a Diamond. He’s still waiting, and it was 11 tricks (and a top board) for Declarer.

In the post mortem West apologized for not grabbing the ♦K while he could, but East could have saved the day. He could count Declarer for 18-19 HCP, leaving Hillsdale was the first school sponsored by Orr Lake Golf Club to receive their Golf in Schools visit from only 3-4 for West. That being so, West presumably had the ♦K and no entries, the Mr Knickers program. Orr Lake Golf Club is working with the Golf Association of Ontario in a pilot and the defense could never score the long Diamonds. So East must cash the ♥A at Trick 2, making it clear to one and all that the defense must take its three program that is being developed to introduce more kids to the game of golf at their schools. Landscaping with native plants STUDENT OF THE MONTH AWARDS Compliments of Landscape Ontario If you're looking for a landscape filled with good looking, easy-to-maintain plants that are well adapted to our climate, then native plant material may be your best bet. Trees, shrubs and flowers that occur naturally in our surroundings are, generally speaking, better adapted to local climate and soil conditions and more resistant to local disease and pests than are the more highly bred, exotic species. On the whole, native stock requires less of your time and money to maintain -- they don't receive any extra moisture or fine manicuring in the depths of the forest! Because of their adaptations, native plants stand a greater chance of healthy, strong growth than most hybrid species. To begin planning your natural planting, take a look around our garden centre. Our staff will be happy to show you some of the native plants listed. Business or Residential Dear Friends: On April 19th, I hosted a townhall meeting to discuss the reclassification of the Swiss Arms Classic Green rifle. In attendance were approximately, Now Accepting Drop Off 70 members of the community, including members from area gun clubs, Shredding in Barrie fish and game conservation clubs, firearms retailers and several individual constituents. Also in attendance was Darlene MacKenzie, the area representative for the National Firearms Association. Each person in attendance was given the opportunity to give statements 705 - 797 - 7473 or ask questions. I advised the audience that a 5-year amnesty has been SHREDNORTH.COM Locally Owned & Operated established so that owners of the particular Swiss Arms rifle (that was reclassified to Prohibited) would not be subject to criminal conviction arising from this reclassification. I went on to acknowledge that the amnesty was only a temporary measure that would permit time to consider amendments to the firearms laws to address the problem created by this unilateral decision without any consultation from the people affected. I indicated the government was working on those amendments so this was a good time for members of the firearms community to provide input and commentary on the issue. I have prepared a document with all the comments, concerns in Busi ce 1973 and changes that firearms owners would like to have amended ne ss sin which I have provided to the Minster of Public Safety, Steven N Blaney.
