This discrepancy ignited a border feud that raged for more than eighty years, a high-stakes dispute involving 4,000 square miles of territory. ABSTRACT The geodetic activities of Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon in America between 1763-68 were, for the period, without precedent. Their famous boundary dividing Maryland from Pennsylvania, the Mason-Dixon Line, today remains a fitting monument to these two brave, resourceful and extremely talented scientists. Tutored by Astronomer Royal Dr James Bradley, Charles Mason was aware of the contemporary theories and experiments to establish the true shape of the Earth. He was also cognisant of what was being termed “the attraction of mountains” (deviation of the vertical). However, at the time it was no more than a theory, a possibility, and it was by no means certain whether the Earth was solid or hollow. The Mason-Dixon Line, a line of constant latitude fifteen miles south of Philadelphia, although the most arduous of their tasks, was only part of their work for the proprietors of Maryland and Pennsylvania. For the Royal Society of London, they also measured the first degree of latitude in America. In recent years, the Mason-Dixon Line Preservation Partnership has located many of the original markers and surveyed them using GPS. The paper reviews the work of Mason and Dixon covering the period 1756-1786. In particular, their methods and results for the American boundary lines are discussed together with comments on the accuracy they achieved compared with GPS observations. What did I have to do on October 19, 2002, that was more important than watching a re-enactment of the placing of a Mason-Dixon crownstone near Harney on the Maryland-Pennsylvania boundary? Hundreds of media types, surveyors and local residents were gathered to see a 575-pound replica of an original marker lowered into position precisely on the line where English surveyors Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon would have sunk one about 1765. Somehow I missed that special event, and I’ll probably never see the likes of it again! Descendants of William Penn and the Maryland Calverts had been arguing over the boundary between their two colonies since Penn received his charter in the 1680s. The 40th parallel was supposed to be the dividing line, but if that had been used, Philadelphia would have ended up in Maryland! So in 1763, Charles II of England sent two of his best surveyors to settle the question. After nearly 5 years of slashing their way through primeval forests and encountering Native Americans who were not especially hospitable, Mason and Dixon finished their task of defining the boundaries between Penn’s “Three Lower Counties” (now Delaware) plus the rest of Pennsylvania and Maryland. Every mile of the boundary was marked with a stone, but at every fifth mile the surveyors erected special “crownstones” which had been brought over as ballast in their ship. Opposite sides of the 5-foot stones were carved with the coats of arms of the Penn and Calvert families, leaving no doubt about who controlled which side.

Significant Dates The Mason-Dixon line forms a highly significant event: in the history of geodesic measurement and also represents a major national landmark of historic importance. Further, it represents an example of an early form of technology assessment in which the ablest scientific and technological minds of the time were called upon to assess alternative solutions to a practical problem of great urgency. Prior to the time when the boundary survey was performed by Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon during 1763-1768, principles of geodesic measurement were largely of theoretical or scientific interest. There had been no practical need to apply such methods in the survey of boundaries of extensive length, where the earth’s curvature could cause complications. However, the boundary controversy between the Calverts and the Penns which occurred in the colonies during the period of 1681 to 1732 identified the need to both develop and apply sophisticated methods for establishing extensive boundaries. The Calverts had been granted Maryland by King Charles I in 1632 and the Penns had been granted adjacent land by King Charles II in 1681. As expressed by language, only in the respective charters, the boundaries could not be precisely located, and even appeared to overlap. This led to many controversies over right of title and payment of taxes for land on the border. There were repeated riots and disorders along the border which created friction in high places in the English government.

T Known as the American Enlightenment, the ideas that origi- nated in Europe developed a distinctly American ethos (Ferguson 1997), particularly in the fields of religious tolerance, political atti- tudes, reason, and liberty—ideas enshrined in the Declaration of Inde- pendence. Where the European Enlightenment made giant strides in scientific thought and discovery, “American science was a branch of British science and depended on Europe for inspiration and ideas . .” (Greene 1968, 22). However, all that changed in 1769 with the merging of the Philosophical Society with the American Society for Promoting Useful Knowledge to form the American Philosophical Society, with Benjamin Franklin its first President (Bell 1964, 7). In the same year of 1769, the new American Philosophical Society, in correspondence with the Royal Society of London, joined the inter- national effort to observe a rare transit of Venus across the face of the Sun on June 3 of that year. Transits of Venus occur in pairs, eight years apart, repeating only every hundred years or so.1 The results of the previous transit of 1761, which occurred in the middle of the Seven Years’ War, had been disappointing, and it was hoped that the 1769 transit would be more successful. For the scientists of Europe, the major difficulty was that the transit would not be visible across most of their continent necessitating sending skilled observers around the world.

ABSTRACT In 1763, Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon were called upon by the colonial proprietors of Pennsylvania and Maryland to demark the long disputed boundary that eventually came to bear their name. During the ensuing four years, Mason and Dixon cleared a line (visto) eight or nine yards wide through the virgin forests of the western frontier, crossed the Allegheny Mountains, and set 500 pound monuments every mile along the way. While it is true that Mason and Dixon accomplished the task of establishing and marking the complex boundary between the Penn’s and Calvert’s, it can hardly be said that they did it alone. This tremendous undertaking required the skills and labor of a large work party. During the late summer of 1767, as many as 115 men were employed as ax-men, instrument bearers, cooks, tent keepers, shepherds and even a milkmaid. The journal of the survey that was kept by Charles Mason contains a wealth of information pertaining to the measurements and astronomical observations taken during the course of the survey. Little is mentioned in his journal about the men who were employed for the work or of the tremendous undertaking necessary to clear the lines for the surveyors to perform their observations. Moses McLean, a colonial surveyor, was hired as the Steward of the survey and was charged with the management of the work force necessary to accomplish this tremendous undertaking.

    A SCIENTIFIC APPROACH TO THOMAS PYNCHON’S MASON AND DIXON INTERACTIVE QUALIFYING PROJECT REPORT: SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE WORCESTER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF SCIENCE BY CHRISTOPHER HORGAN PHYSICS DATE: APRIL 28, 2011 Abstract This paper is an analysis of how a writer of fiction with a strong sense of social and moral values uses the scientific history of the 18th century to convey his ideals in an historical novel. Through a constant showcasing of both scientific and historical embellishments, Pynchon builds his argument against the surveying of right lines upon the Earth.
