On January 1st, 2006 I began to fulfill my New Years resolution to read Thomas Pynchon's Mason & Dixon at a pace of three pages a day. I resolved to look everything up that was interesting or obscure. I took a lot of notes throughout the nine months it took to read the book. This is the result. If you find any errors, please email me at [email protected] and I'll incorporate your corrections into this text. Toby Levy pages 1-3: Page 5 reveals that the year at the start of this book is 1786, and the place is Philadelphia. This is The first numbered page in the hardcover first where Charles Mason died earlier that year. The first edition is page 6. named character is Whiskers the cat. The children are identified on this page only as "the twins and their Leafing back from there, page 1 is the one that sister." ABSTRACT The geodetic activities of Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon in America between 1763-68 were, for the period, without precedent. Their famous boundary dividing Maryland from Pennsylvania, the Mason-Dixon Line, today remains a fitting monument to these two brave, resourceful and extremely talented scientists. Tutored by Astronomer Royal Dr James Bradley, Charles Mason was aware of the contemporary theories and experiments to establish the true shape of the Earth. He was also cognisant of what was being termed “the attraction of mountains” (deviation of the vertical). However, at the time it was no more than a theory, a possibility, and it was by no means certain whether the Earth was solid or hollow. The Mason-Dixon Line, a line of constant latitude fifteen miles south of Philadelphia, although the most arduous of their tasks, was only part of their work for the proprietors of Maryland and Pennsylvania. For the Royal Society of London, they also measured the first degree of latitude in America. In recent years, the Mason-Dixon Line Preservation Partnership has located many of the original markers and surveyed them using GPS. The paper reviews the work of Mason and Dixon covering the period 1756-1786. In particular, their methods and results for the American boundary lines are discussed together with comments on the accuracy they achieved compared with GPS observations. The hearing will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church, 32940 Maryland Line Road in Massey, Maryland. Members of the public who wish to comment on the matter are welcome to attend the hearing before Public Utility Law Judge Ryan C. McLean. A second public hearing will be during the week of April 16, 2018, at a time and location to be determined. Where Am I? Activity Summary This activity explores geospatial systems so that students can create waypoints and record latitude and longitude of places in a watershed as a first step in monitoring a local waterway. These skills are basic to understanding how locations are found on earth with the use of maps, coordinates, and technology. Learning Objectives: Students will be able to: • Explain the concept of locating a site on Earth with 3 satellites. • Use latitude and longitude coordinates to identify features on a map. 1 Oceanservice.noaa.gov • Use a GPS receiver or a smart phone to locate the waypoint of a local feature on the school grounds. Background Information Humans have looked to the skies to find their way since ancient times. Ancient sailors used the constellations in the night sky to figure out where they were and where they were going. Today, all we need is a simple hand-held GPS (short for Global Positioning System) receiver to figure out exactly where we are anywhere in the world. However, we still need instruments high in the sky to figure out where we are and how we get to other places. Instead of stars, we use Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites, to help determine a location on the planet. The concepts behind GPS positioning are very simple, but the application and implementation require amazing precision. -

High Point, New Jersey – ‘09 High Point, New Jersey is located a few miles from the NJ-NY-PA tri-point. The summit is 1803 feet above sea level. It is a drive-up located inside of High Point State Park. At the top of the 220-foot structure, observers have a breathtaking view of the ridges of the Pocono Mountains toward the west, the Catskill Mountains to the north and the Wallkill River Valley in the southeast. Convention Headquarters --- Best Western Inn at Hunt’s Landing The convention headquarters will be located in Matamoras, Pennsylvania -- a ten minute drive from the highpoint, directly across the Delaware River.
