The unanimous decision by the County Board of Supervisors conveys an important vote of confidence and underscores the community's recognition of our role as the leading advocates for historic preservation. The decision represents a milestone and an important turning pointing in the organization's thirty-one year history. Stewardship of this exciting Old Town resource will extend SOHO's sphere of influence as active partners in the "business" of historic preservation. Having a base of operations and a full time paid staff will enable us to demonstrate by example the educational, financial and cultural benefits of preserving our heritage. The Whaley House Compound will become a center of activity from where we will stage many of our major events throughout the year.     PREPARING NOMINATIONS TO THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES A SUPPLEMENTAL GUIDE FOR NEVADANS Nevada State Historic Preservation Office Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Revised 2017 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS In 1998, Mella Rothwell Harmon, then coordinator for the National and State Register programs, crafted a guide book to be used by Nevadans to understand and utilize the National Register of Historic Places. In 2007, Terri McBride provided revisions to the original guide. This 2017 revision is being completed in response to updated program requirements from the National Park Service, as well as program updates to the Nevada State Register of Historic Places, a sister program to the National Register. Nevada has almost 100,000 recorded archaeological sites that span 12,000 years of human occupation, and more than 13,000 buildings, structures, and other historic sites from the historic period identified through over 650 surveys. Many more prehistoric and historic sites remain undocumented. There are currently over 375 of these places or larger historic districts listed in the National Register of Historic Places in Nevada. Over 150 are listed in the Nevada State Register of Historic Places. Historic properties give communities a sense of identity and stability, adding richly to the quality of life. These historic places—the houses, stores, hotels, courthouses, train stations, ranches, way stations, irrigation systems, landscapes, and bridges—are woven into the fabric of our daily lives. They help shape the unique character and spirit of each Nevada community. Preserving these resources contributes to the vitality of Nevada’s cities, towns, and rural communities, ensuring that reminders of our heritage remain for future generations and contributing to sustainable development across the state.

From the Native American sites and California’s earliest Spanish settlements, to recent landmarks such as the renowned 1965 Salk Institute for Biological Studies, San Diego has a rich and diverse continuum of cultural artifacts to appreciate. The buildings, sites and structures expressing the Modernist era are a crucial contributor to this continuum. This Historic Context Statement on San Diego Modernism describes the background of social and economic history, development patterns, and artistic and cultural trends that informed the years 1935-1970 when Modernism flowered in San Diego. This context statement also becomes an essential tool for the City Historical Resources Board (HRB), and the City staff to more accurately assess the value and relative significance of resources in this time period. It provides a foundation for future HRB efforts and consideration of historic designation of significant Modernist resources. Furthermore, this Statement reinforces the City’s commitment to all aspects and periods of its history, particularly the most recent period leading into our current 45 year window of review. San Diego is blessed with a wealth of Modernist resources created by bold, accomplished and nationally recognized practitioners.
