I would like to leave the memory of a human being with a correct attutude and who did her best to help others." -Grace Kelly We can’t believe after months and months of planning that we are finally here. We started this journey with an open mind, wanting to create a magical evening that brought out the best in all of us. We challenged ourselves to try something completely different to celebrate our Curtis community: a new venue, new location and new theme. Yet all along we worked to stay true to the core values of our community. We wanted this to be an opportunity for YOU to relax, have fun, dress up, eat, drink, listen to music, and truly bond with each other. All of this, while raising money for something so close to our hearts, the Curtis School Financial Aid Fund. So here we are! We hope that you are as excited for this night as we are. Get ready to come “Dressed to Kill” as we are transported to the Petersen Automotive Museum for a Monte-Carlo night to remember. As you can imagine, none of this could have happened without all of the support from the parents, administration, faculty, staff, and friends of Curtis. • Funk Is Its Own Reward": an Analysis of Selected Lyrics In
ABSTRACT AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES LACY, TRAVIS K. B.A. CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY DOMINGUEZ HILLS, 2000 "FUNK IS ITS OWN REWARD": AN ANALYSIS OF SELECTED LYRICS IN POPULAR FUNK MUSIC OF THE 1970s Advisor: Professor Daniel 0. Black Thesis dated July 2008 This research examined popular funk music as the social and political voice of African Americans during the era of the seventies. The objective of this research was to reveal the messages found in the lyrics as they commented on the climate of the times for African Americans of that era. A content analysis method was used to study the lyrics of popular funk music. This method allowed the researcher to scrutinize the lyrics in the context of their creation. When theories on the black vernacular and its historical roles found in African-American literature and music respectively were used in tandem with content analysis, it brought to light the voice of popular funk music of the seventies. This research will be useful in terms of using popular funk music as a tool to research the history of African Americans from the seventies to the present. The research herein concludes that popular funk music lyrics espoused the sentiments of the African-American community as it utilized a culturally familiar vernacular and prose to express the evolving sociopolitical themes amid the changing conditions of the seventies era. Their support, both in the studio and onstage, has lent Knight’s music much of its warmth and family feeling - rare qualities in any kind of popular music and even rarer in such strong rock and soul terms. Knight made her public singing debut at Mount Mariah Baptist Church, in Atlanta - she was 4 years old. At 7, she won first prize on Ted Mack’s Original Amateur Hour TV show. She got together with her brother Merald, sister Brenda, and cousins James “ Pip” Woods, William Guest and his sister Elenor to tour with Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke in the late ’50s. Following a failed 1957 Brunswick Records debut, Elenor and Brenda left to get married and were re placed by yet another cousin, Edward Pat ten, and Langston George. This was the lineup that scored the group’s first hit sin gle, 1961’s “Every Beat of My Heart,” a 9-year-old song by Hall of Famer Johnny Otis.

  • The Sounds of Liberation: Resistance, Cultural Retention, and Progressive Traditions for Social Justice in African American Music
THE SOUNDS OF LIBERATION: RESISTANCE, CULTURAL RETENTION, AND PROGRESSIVE TRADITIONS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE IN AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSIC A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Professional Studies by Luqman Muhammad Abdullah May 2009 © 2009 Luqman Muhammad Abdullah ABSTRACT The cultural production of music in the Black community has traditionally operated as much more than a source of entertainment. In fact, my thesis illustrates how progressive traditions for social justice in Black music have acted as a source of agency and a tool for resistance against oppression. This study also explains how the music of African Americans has served as a primary mechanism for disseminating their cultural legacy. I have selected four Black artists who exhibit the aforementioned principles in their musical production. Bernice Johnson Reagon, John Coltrane, Curtis Mayfield and Gil Scott-Heron comprise the talented cadre of musicians that exemplify the progressive Black musical tradition for social justice in their respective genres of gospel, jazz, soul and spoken word. The methods utilized for my study include a socio-historical account of the origins of Black music, an overview of the artists’ careers, and a lyrical analysis of selected songs created by each of the artists. This study will contribute to the body of literature surrounding the progressive roles, functions and utilities of African American music. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH My mother garners the nickname “gypsy” from her siblings due to the fact that she is always moving and relocating to new and different places.

  • Rock Album Discography Last Up-Date: September 27Th, 2021
Rock Album Discography Last up-date: September 27th, 2021 Rock Album Discography “Music was my first love, and it will be my last” was the first line of the virteous song “Music” on the album “Rebel”, which was produced by Alan Parson, sung by John Miles, and released I n 1976. From my point of view, there is no other citation, which more properly expresses the emotional impact of music to human beings. People come and go, but music remains forever, since acoustic waves are not bound to matter like monuments, paintings, or sculptures. In contrast, music as sound in general is transmitted by matter vibrations and can be reproduced independent of space and time. In this way, music is able to connect humans from the earliest high cultures to people of our present societies all over the world. Music is indeed a universal language and likely not restricted to our planetary society. The importance of music to the human society is also underlined by the Voyager mission: Both Voyager spacecrafts, which were launched at August 20th and September 05th, 1977, are bound for the stars, now, after their visits to the outer planets of our solar system (mission status: https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status/). They carry a gold- plated copper phonograph record, which comprises 90 minutes of music selected from all cultures next to sounds, spoken messages, and images from our planet Earth. There is rather little hope that any extraterrestrial form of life will ever come along the Voyager spacecrafts. But if this is yet going to happen they are likely able to understand the sound of music from these records at least.
