DocuSign Envelope ID: 53EAE5A9-A79F-4FEC-82FA-A4003FD2523F TERMS OF REFERENCE Position: National expert on support and coordination of work during implementation of the second phase of the Eco Damu micro-loan program Project title and number: UNDP-GEF Project «Conservation and sustainable management of key globally important ecosystems for multiple benefits», 00101043 Duration: 12 months from the date of contract signing, 210 working days, December 2020 - December 2021 Duty station: Home based with trips to East Kazakhstan, Almaty and Turkestan regions Contract Type: Individual contract PROJECT DESCRIPTION Project background, basic information and objectives Kazakhstan has approximately 12.6 million hectares of forest, which makes it one of the most forest- rich countries in Eurasia, despite the fact that its forests amount to only 4.6% of the national territory. Approximately 95% of Kazakhstan’s forests are managed by 123 state forestry entities, which are overseen by regional governments (akimats). Under the current forest governance system, forestry entities lack sufficient capacity to effectively manage HCVF, including those forests neighboring highly biodiverse protected areas. Kazakhstan’s protected area system covers approximately 24,018,800 ha, or 8.81% (as of 2015) of the total country, although only 5% of Kazakhstan’s forests are included within protected areas. Therefore, forest ecosystems are underrepresented in the national protected area systems. Kazakhstan has three main forest ecosystem types: alpine forests, tugai (riparian) forests, and saxaul landscapes (desert and semi-desert shrubs). GEF-UNDP Project “«Conservation and sustainable management of key globally important ecosystems for multiple benefits» (hereinafter referred as Project) has being implemented in Kazakhstan since 2018.

Toponymy of the Ancient Sary-Arka (North-Eastern Kazakhstan). Quaestiones Geographicae 37(3), Bogucki Wydawnictwo Naukowe, Poznań, pp. 35–52. 7 figs. ABSTRACT This study examines the etymology of the principal physiographic entities of the ancient Sary-Arka area– meaning in the old Turkic language Yellowing Ridge – encompassing the present territory of parkland-steppes, rocky highlands and the adjacent mountains of North and East Kazakhstan. The current linguistic evidence points to a com- plex and chronologically long culture-historical development reflected by the local place names best-recorded for the major rivers and mountains (hydronyms and oronyms, respectively). Not all geo-site names are securely determined by using modern onomastics. Records of material culture provide additional multi-proxy information. Local uniform- ity of some toponyms across the extensive area assuming a common cultural background attests to a broader ethnic homogeneity and/or mobility of the ancient populations inhabiting this vast and geomorphically mosaic land. This suggests a close relationship and interactions (including demographic exchanges and mixing) between the past pasto- ral ethics in the parkland-steppe and semi-desert areas north of Lake Balkhash between the Aral Sea and the southern Urals in the West and the Alatau–Altai Mountain systems in the East.

bilig SUMMER 2019/NUMBER 90 93-115 Peculiarities of Seasonal Migration of The Kazakhs (The End of The XIX – The Beginning of The XX)* Tattigul Kartaeva** Abstract The Kazakhs, involved in livestock keeping, provided their livestock with natural pastures in all seasons. For this purpose the Kazakhs used pastures according to seasons: qystau (winter pasture), kokteu (spring pasture), zhailav (summer pasture) and kuzdeu (autumn pasture). The given article considers the usage of seasonal camps and historical-topography and cartography of the route of the Kazakhs on the basis of scientific facts. There were traditions and beliefs connected with seasonal migration. Those tribes who were involved in livestock keeping used to move to a long distance. The concept of risk assessment is based on determining the individual and collective (population) risk of a pathological condition under the influence of adverse environmental factors [1, 2]. In modern conditions, public health directly depends on the safety of the environment and the level of disease prevention. The activity of a modern person is carried out in conditions of an increase in the intensity and duration of the action of adverse environmental factors. The combination, simultaneous or sequential action of several factors leads to a mutual burdening of their influence on the human body, causing a rapid depletion of human physiological reserves. In response to the effect of a certain dose (intensity and duration) of unfavorable factors, states of extreme stress of adaptation mechanisms with reversible phenomena of maladjustment can develop [3].

The study shows no excess of health-based exposure limits. However, the excess of radonconcentrationwas registered at the site of land allocation for average global construction, and the radionuclide content (226Ra, 232Th, 40Ê) in the soil of some regions was higher than the worldwide background (percentage abundance) and multi-year average data for the Russian Federation and Kazakhstan. But this is a special kind of creativity, which took the real truth from the life of this people and transferred it into an epic narrative. And any kind of creativity tends to artistry. Hence, the epic is basically a historical work that embodies the dream of the people and their real life. Methods: Heroic epic is a special branch of folklore, which is a witness to the centuries-old historical memory of the people, an inseparable spiritual thread, a sign of the presence of high culture. Findings: According to the scientist M. O. Auezov: "Careful, detailed analysis of the Kazakh heroic stories shows: although it can not be said that they clearly reveal the pages of history, but still in allegorical form they draw great pictures of the most important periods of this ancient history" [Auezov, 1991]. Heroic epic allows you to see the life of the people in the distant past, to trace the chain of long-standing historical events, epic traditions and the time of their appearance.
