Selim Yavuz Centre for Advanced Studies in Music, Istanbul Technical University 05/01/2013 Symbolism and Text Painting in Tan Dun’s Marco Polo Recent opera repertoire has seen a wide variety of styles in opera composition. Marco Polo represents a rather unique corner of this wide variety. Tan Dun explores a capacious array of influences in this work. Starting from his own roots, Chinese traditional music, he explores European art tradition to some extent. Tan Dun also touches the styles and elements that are present along the journey of Marco Polo. What makes Marco Polo an interesting case study for symbolism and –to use the “old” term- madrigalism1, is the fact that this opera incorporates so many different allusions and remarks alongside with direct references. Tan Dun does not refrain from using direct references to elements outside of the European art music idiom which were/are generally left as distant allusions when used by Europe-origin composers. This might be because of the confidence brought out by the fact that he is of Chinese origin and the general opinion of European art music community that one should always embrace their own roots. This is, of course, just idle speculation. Here, the article will try to demonstrate aforementioned elements within with concrete musical examples. Tan Dun describes the departure point for composing Marco Polo as the longing to find the answer to the question that was posed to him by a Southern Chinese Monk 1 Text painting. -

Puffer Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences Rutgers University Boyden Hall Newark, NJ 07102 [email protected] ABSTRACT This field trip will focus on five contrasting and distinct late Triassic to early Jurassic lithologies. These rocks are trondhjemite, syenite, and their sedimentary protoliths, and diabase sills that are part of the Central Atlantic Magmatic Province (CAMP). All five of these lithologies are exposed at six widely spaced northern New Jersey and Staten Island, NY locations, some of which will be visited on this field trip. Chemical and petrographic analyses of closely spaced samples collected at each of these locations demonstrates a genetic linkage of the syenite and trondhjemite to sedimentary lithologies and a near absence of magma mixing with CAMP diabase. This lack of contamination helps explain the province wide uniformity of CAMP diabase types. INTRODUCTION The early Jurassic Palisades intrusion of the Newark Basin crops out from Haverstraw New York to the northwestern part of Staten Island, a distance of 90 km., and underlies a narrow belt along the western part of Staten Island (Figure 1). Page 1 of 4 Le Bon Journal Review Tan Dun's Marco Polo in Amsterdam 7 - 28 November 2008 When we were kids, my friends and I played Marco Polo in the swimming pool. “Marco!” the blindfolded person would call out. “Polo!” everyone else would shout in response. That was the only way the person could guess where everyone else was. “Marco!” “Polo!” Of course, the “Polo’s” could be moving targets. Whoever gets caught becomes the next Marco. The librettist Paul Griffiths split Marco and Polo into two halves of the same person, not unlike the childhood game we played. Marco is the man as seen from the outside. Polo is the man as felt from the inside. In the Netherlands Opera production at the Music Theatre Amsterdam in November 2008, Marco is sung by New Zealand-born mezzo- soprano Sarah Castle. The American tenor Charles Workman sings Polo. I would have thought the woman to be the person seen from the inside and the man on the outside. Without reading the synopsis beforehand, it’s not so obvious that the two are different sides of the same Marco Polo. Similarly, if I hadn’t heard of Tan Dun or his academy award-winning theme in Ang Lee’s “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” I would have been confused by Tan Dun’s opera “Marco Polo.” That haunting cello solo of Yo Yo Ma from the movie made me expect any work of Tan Dun to be equally enchanting. And having scanned the synopsis and the complicated layers of the Marco Polo libretto, an opera within an opera as it’s been called, I looked forward to this evening with great expectation. -

Becker and Alex Bartholomew Volume 49, 2013 Article abstract Large fossiliferous glacial erratics occur scattered across the basalt of the URI: https://id.erudit.org/iderudit/1062314ar Preakness Formation (Lower Jurassic) on High Mountain, Passaic County, New Jersey. These erratics are comprised of light tan to yellow, sandy limestone and See table of contents contain fossiliferous beds with casts and molds of invertebrates. Analysis of these fossils including: rostroconchs, brachiopods, pelecypods, corals, bryozoans, nautiloid cephalopods and trilobites as well as the distinct lithology Publisher(s) indicate that these erratics belong to the Lower Devonian Tristates Group and the Rickard Hill Facies of the Schoharie Formation. Outcrops of the Rickard Hill Atlantic Geoscience Society Facies of the Schoharie Formation occur in a narrow belt within the Helderberg Mountains Region of New York and due north of the High ISSN Mountain recovery location. Reconstruction of the glacial history across the Helderberg Mountains Region and New Jersey Piedmont indicates that the 0843-5561 (print) Rickard Hill Erratics have been transported tens of kilometers from their 1718-7885 (digital) original source region during the Wisconsin glaciation.
