ACES WILD ACES WILD The Story of the British Grand Prix THE STORY OF THE Peter Miller Motor racing is one of the most 10. 3. BRITISH GRAND PRIX exacting and dangerous sports in the world today. And Grand Prix racing for Formula 1 single-seater cars is the RIX GREATS toughest of them all. The ultimate ambition of every racing driver since 1950, when the com petition was first introduced, has been to be crowned as 'World Cham pion'. In this, his fourth book, author Peter Miller looks into the back ground of just one of the annual qualifying rounds-the British Grand Prix-which go to make up the elusive title. Although by no means the oldest motor race on the English sporting calendar, the British Grand Prix has become recognised as an epic and invariably dramatic event, since its inception at Silverstone, Northants, on October 2nd, 1948. Since gaining World Championship status in May, 1950 — it was in fact the very first event in the Drivers' Championships of the W orld-this race has captured the interest not only of racing enthusiasts, LOONS but also of the man in the street. It has been said that the supreme test of the courage, skill and virtuosity of a Grand Prix driver is to w in the Monaco Grand Prix through the narrow streets of Monte Carlo and the German Grand Prix at the notorious Nürburgring. Both of these gruelling circuits cer tainly stretch a driver's reflexes to the limit and the winner of these classic events is assured of his rightful place in racing history.

  • Marshals' Post
MARSHALS’ The newsletter of the South East Region of the British Motorsport Marshals Club P OS T July / August 2019 CHAIRMAN’S THOUGHTS Like me, you may well have watched the Canadian and British Grand Prix on Sky TV….while I know some others were actually there; some as marshals and some spectating…… I thought I’d rattle some cages, in this issue. Why the hell not?....it’s my column! I had read a Facebook entry that said that the blue flag marshals had been told that they would be redundant, come the race on Sunday. Race Control would handle the blue signalling via their lights. Come the race, I could see that, indeed, there were no blue flags to be seen, and that cars about to be lapped were being shown a blue light. However, the signal appeared to overcome the oft quoted criticism: “but the blue light cannot be shown to a specific car”. This drawback was overcome by having the light panel bordered by blue on all four sides, and the number of the car about to be lapped shown in large white detail. 16 To my mind, this all looks very effective, and eliminates the varying standards of blue flagging which inevitably, irrespective of the flag marshal’s concentration and skills, occurs. Of course, the theoretical effectiveness of such a system depends on 1. A GPS tracking system for the operator in Race Control to use 2. The operator in Race Control is fully competent at assessing the rate at which a leading car is approaching a back-marker.

Keki pipped Peter on the last lap to take P2. Mike Eagles in his Mangusta, who has been suffering brake issues most of the season, appears to have sorted those and qualified P5 with a time of 2:04.248 a mighty impressive time for a beast like that. Dick Coffey claimed Class E pole in a time of 2:09.557. All he had to do to secure the overall championship for the year was to make the start; however, in usual fashion, he was dominant in Class E and won the Class and in turn has won the championship for the year. He last won the championship in 2003. For the race, Keki took a jump on John Davison and Peter Shaw at the start. Shaw and Davison tussled for a couple of laps which allowed Keki to lead. Then Davison gradually reeled in the Morgan on lap 4 and made a late braking move into Lodge to slightly nudge ahead and then the pair drag- raced across the finish line into Old Hall bend, but Davison could not hold onto the position.

AES Chooses Community and Powersoft for Pau Grand Prix For more than a century, the streets of Pau city in the south of France are annually transformed into a race track as the city welcomes the Grand Prix of Pau. Over two weekends in May each year, visitors enjoy a spectacular festival of motor sport events. The festival includes the Pau Grand Prix, a main event of the FIA F3 European Championship, and the Historic Grand Prix, which combines race track competitions, parades, vintage car shows and private track sessions. Since 2017, the festival has also included the exciting FFSA GT French Championship, the French Formula 4 Championship, and European Formula Renault 2.0 racing. The 2005 Pau Grand Prix saw victory for a young Lewis Hamilton, who later went on to become a Formula One World Champion. Rain during the first weekend of the 2018 event provided nature’s ubiquitous challenge for both the racing drivers and the PA system. Beautiful sunshine over the second weekend allowed the drivers to use full throttle, presenting a different challenge for the PA. (continued on next page) Audio Equipements Spectacles (AES) designed and provided the sound system for the public areas of the event, including the five grandstands located at key spectator points around the track. To achieve the best sound quality possible, AES manager, Jean-Noël Cazalis, opted to implement a high impedance solution. Being a major provider of event sound, and with the contract for the Grand Prix of Pau for three years, AES was able to invest substantially in the system and chose Community R SERIES loudspeakers, which provided the sound quality, high output, controlled coverage and all-weather capability they wanted.
