Wonderwall – Oasis – Notes
Activity types: vocabulary, crossword, listening for specific words, gap fill, discussion.
Time: 30 mins.
Note: Wonderwall is a 1995 song by English rock band Oasis, written by the band's guitarist and main songwriter Noel Gallagher. The song was included in their second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory? . According to Gallagher, "Wonderwall" describes "an imaginary friend who's gonna come and save you from yourself." The song's title was appropriated from Wonderwall, a 1968 film whose soundtrack was provided by George Harrison. The cover of the single was inspired by the paintings of the Belgian surrealist René Magritte, and was shot on Primrose Hill in north London.
1) Give each student a copy of the worksheet and ask them to fold it so they cannot see the lyrics. In pairs ask them to complete the crossword.
2) When they have almost completed, play the song. Ask them to listen for the words in the puzzle, and to put them in the order they hear them.
Key: (it is not necessary for them to complete it at this stage).
3) Ask them to unfold the page to see the lyrics. They can complete these with words from the crossword. They should be able to this without listening to the song.
4) Play the song and ask them to complete the lyrics and, if necessary, the crossword.
5) Students check their answers in pairs or in groups, then correct in open class and sing together!
