This paper entitled A Description of Moral Values in Jason Mraz Love Album.The main focus of this research is to find the moral values contained in the lyrics of Jason Mraz Love album.This paper applied descriptive qualitative research methods. The data source of this research is a Jason Mraz Love album. The technique used to describe the data by: 1. read the lyrics carefully and repeatedly. 2. Understand the content of lyrics. 3. Listening. 4. write and make some note,interpret the meaning and make conclusion.. The result of the study is presented in the form ofparagraphs. In the song’s lyrics ofJason Mraz Love Album, the autors found 3 data in form of Sincerity and 2 data in the form of peach-loving. Moral values also refer to somethingthat is good or bad. One communicate with each other with a standart of moral ethical. So, the moral is a good way to behave well in life.

Makalah ini berjudul “A Description of Moral Value in Jason Mraz Love album” . Fokus utama dari penelitian ini adalah menemukan nilai-nilai moral yang terkandung dalam lirik album Jason Mraz Love. Makalah ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif deskriptif. Sumber data penelitianiniadalah album Jason Mraz Love.Teknik yang digunakan untuk mendeskripsikan data dengan: 1. Membaca lirik dengan seksama dan berulang-ulang. 2. Memahami isi lirik. 3. Mendengarkan. 4. Tulis dan buat beberapa catatan, interpretasikan makna dan buat kesimpulan . Hasil penelitian disajikan dalam bentuk paragraf. Dalam lirik lagu Jason Mraz Love Album, para penulis menemukan 3 data dalam bentuk Ketulusan dan 2 data dalam bentuk peach-loving. 1.1 Background of the study

Language is a network of relationship. As human being, people really need language to do interaction and communication to each other. As Clark (1997:3) said “language stands at the centre of human affairs, from the most prosaic to the most profound”. It means that language is very important in life and is the power of expressing tought and feelings. Language is also the expression of ideas by writing or any other instrumentality. There are so many ways to express someone‟s tought and feeling by using language, such as : by mucis, poems, short story, speech, etc.

Music is the expression of someone‟s soul. As Machlis (1995) said “music has been called as the language of emotion”. It means that by music we can know if someone is in sadness or happiness by the music that they heard. As Aristoteles

(www.google.com) said “music has a troubled heart, has a recreactionaltheraphy and foster patriotism. Music take a big part of every moment in our life. Because of that, music has the effect that could influence someone to act to do something.

It can be a good thing or bad thing. In addition, music is a part of literary work.

Literary work is the art of written work. Literary work is commonly classified into two major forms; fiction and nonfiction. The kind of literary works are poem, song lyrics, novel, movie, drama, and etc. Music and literary works are very useful since they have various values such as moral, religious,educational, and

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA sociological values. A good piece of literature is something that is capable to reflect the principles of humanity

Generally, every writer has plenty of imagination stated in the lyrics. The message containsmany ideas, such as social, satire, motivation, education, till a romantic. Literature is also one of media to show some of the meaning, one of them is moral value that presented by author. By the songs the author tries to teach and deliver good moral for the people. People have to improve and maintain their good moral. Morality is common word to say, but it is very difficult to imply in human‟s daily life. Morality is something that must be owned by human because without morality human will not br respected by other people. It will be easy for people to socialize with other and they will be accepted in the community. Moral values can not only be obtained by discussion in formal situation or books, but also people can use songs to deliverthe moral message of the songs. In this case, people will get bored when they get moral values from textbooks and the advice from their teachers or parents. Moral values can be well delivered by using music, because many people use song to express their feeling at the moment. It can give enjoyment, fun, and pleasure in studying.

Song lyrics is included of kind of literature because lyric is language creation

(poem) which contains of personal feeling expression. Song lyric is like poem but it is served in song form. It attributes are imaginative but nowadays. Song also contains critic to our government‟s wisdom, welfare, miserable, etc. A lyric which is written by author, has destination that will be delivered to audience.

Song contains of word system, good diction, figurative language, so it will makes

Almost of people hear song be able toward their interest that contains simple lyric, easy to understand and remember because they are in growing faze. They learn by singing song that they like. Teenagers prefer listen love song than other because almost of them feel in love in this age. Mean while old people usually like slow song because their hearing are weak. Song is more interesting if is sung by singer who has certain voice character beside sing lyric also interesting. Singers give special voice that makes it touch audience‟s feeling. Music arrangement also influences music power too.

In this research writer will describe songs lyric of Jason Mraz album “Love” is so melancholic and simple but consist of many languages learning about moral value. These albums consist of 12 songs, this research will study and analyze about moral value that there are in Jason Mraz song. After reading the text of a song the listeners do not know what the topic of the text is. They cannot understand the sentence that they read or listen in the song simply. Every song has many massagers. The language used in literary work has been specific language used in other communication. Music and song are parts of this world of sound, and art is based on the organization. So, the writer makes research with title “The

The purpose of this study is to find out the kinds of moral values and

to find out the meaning of those moral values in SING Original

Soundtrack Album

1.4. The scope of the study

This paper limits the study only in the moral values from Jason

Mraz selected song lyrics. Jason Mraz has eighteen lyrics. The writer

chooses 5 hits songs from Jason Mraz albums ,They are (1) “I wont

giveup”,(2) “living in the moment”, (3) “93 milion miles”,(4) “the women

I love” (5) “who‟s thinking about you now?” those selected songs contain

several values which is the background and the reason why the writer

chooses this study.

1.5. Method of the Research

In conducting this paper the writer used qualitative method by using

this method, the writer tried to describe the moral value in song lyrics by

Jason Mraz. With the qualitative method the people can interpret the

meanings of the hidden words in the song lyrics. Another method applied

in this research is a descriptive method which is useful in describing the

facts and phenomenon. As the first step, the writer listen and try to

understand song lyrics Jason Mraz from CD. Second, search the lyrics

from internet. Then the writer write and make some note and conclusion.

2.1. Definitions of Moral Value

Value is something high, valuable, important and useful for human. Value is a belief or feeling that is believed to be an identity which gives a special pattern to a way of thinking, feeling, attachment and behavior. The value is closely related to the way people assess. Assessing means to consider human activities that connect something to something else, which is further to take a decision. This assessment is linked with elements in humans such as physical,creativity, initiative, sense and conviction. Values and literature are complementary and are inseparable. Literary works were born and sourced from human life and have a high value. Literature will be a contribution to the formation of values so that lovers of literature will be civilized, well-mannered, and virtuous men, and agreeing with the applicable rules. The values in the literature usually reflect the views of the author„s life or values that are attractive to the author and are necessary to convey to the readers.

Goode (1977:4) has stated that values are: “The standards that people share. These standards are used to judge whether something is good or bad, beautiful or ugly, right or wrong, moral or immoral. Values are typically supported by specific norms, thats is more detailed directions for proper behavior.

Norms are the more specific rules or definitions of how we are supposed to act in a given situation”. Either men and women have some sense of values. For better or worse, to form some scale of values, life forces us to make choices.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA The terms “Value” and “Valuation” are used in our contemporary culture, not only in economics and philosophy but also (and especially) in other social sciences and humanities. Their meaning was once relatively clear and limited.

Value meant the worth of a thing, and valuation meant an estimate of its worth.

The uses of value and valuation are various and conflicting even amongphilosophers, but they may perhaps be sorted out as follows (Paul Edwards:

1967: 229-230): a. Value (in the singular) is sometimes used as an abstract noun in a narrower sense to cover only that to which such terms as good, desirable, or worthwhile are properly applied and in a wider sense to cover, in addition, all kinds of rightness, obligation, virtue, beauty, truth, and holiness. Value is also used like temperature to cover the whole range of a scale plus, minus, or indifferent; what is on the plus side is then called positive value and what is on the minus side, negative value. b. “Value” refers to what is valued, judged to have value, thought to be good, or desired. Such phrases are also used to refer to what people think is right or obligatory and even to whatever they believe to be true. Behind this widespread usage lies the covert assumption that nothing really has objective value, that value means being valued and good means being though good. But the term value is also used to mean. c. Dewey always distinguishes two senses of value, it means either to prize, like, esteem, cherish, or hold dear. Or to apprize, estimates, evaluates, or valuate.

UNIVERSITAS SUMATERA UTARA Moral is something to be conveyed by the author to the reader, where the meaning contained in a literature work and the suggested meaning is conveyed through stories. That means the authors express a moral message to the readers through literary works, either directly or indirectly. Moral in literature usually reflects the views of the authors„ life, the views on the values of truth, and what the authors wants to deliver to the readers.

According to (PaulEdwards: 1967: 150) a morality contains: (1) beliefs about the nature of the man, (2) belief aboutideals, about what is goodor desirable or worthy or pursuit for its own sake,(3) rules laying down what ought to be done and (4) motives that incline us tochoose the right or the wrong course. We learn as children that we should beunselfish, that weshouldnot tell lies.

Based on description above, we can conclude that morality is the measurement used to determine what is right or wrong of human beings attitudes and actions in terms of the goodness and badness.

Moral value is value that must be separated with other values. Every value will get quality if it has relation with other values. For example, Honesty is example of moral values, this value has no meaning if it does not be applied with other values. Loyalty is moral value, but it must be applied with other, humanity value for general, for example, love of husband and wife. (Bertens: 2000: 142)

(1997:142-147) says, every values will get quality if it has relation with other values, Moral values are characterized:

1. Responsibility

Moral values related to the human person who is responsible. A moral

value only is realized in actions that are fully the responsibility of the

person concerned. Humans themselves becom

2. Moral value is related with pure heart

All values need to make it real. Because it has persuasive power, it should

be practice. For example, aesthetic value, it should be practiced, play

music composition or others. After that the result of it, painting want to be

showed, and music want to be listened. To make moral value to be real, it

can be appealed from pure heart. One of special characteristics of moral

values is this value will effect voice of pure heart to accuse us if oppose

moral value and praise us if make moral value.

3. Obligation

Moral value obligates us absolutely and it can‟t be compromised. Other

values need to be real and admitted, for example, aesthetic value.

Educative and cultural person will admit and enjoying aesthetic value. But

indifferent people can‟t we blame. Moral value obligates us as such,

without requirement. For example, honesty orders us to return thing that

borrowed, like or not, because moral value contains an imperative

bechampion, he/she must try hard. It‟s a must to be champion, but there is

a limitation.

4. Formality

Moral value is not stand-alone without other value. Moral values did not

separate with other values. Moral values are nothing without other values.

It is form of formality. Max Scheler mentioned in Bertens that moral

values “get a lift” to other values.

2.2 Types of Moral Values

Here are The Types of Moral Values :

1. Bravery

Bravery is face (something involving possible unfortunate or

disastrous consequences) or endure (as hardship) use with self-control and

mastery of tear and often with a particular objective in vie. Bravery is able

to meet danger or endure pain or hardship without giving in to fear.

Bravery is arising from or suggestive or mastery of fear and intelligent use

of faculties especially under duress. (Webster: 1981 p.269).

2. Enthusiasm

Enthusiasm is strong excitement of feeling on behalf of a cause

ofsubject, something that inspires or is pursued or regarded with ardent

zealor fervor. Enthusiast is a person who is or believes to himself to be

visionary, extravagant, or excessively zealous in his religious views or

emotion. While enthusiastic is relating to enthusiasm or inspired

preaching. Enthusiasm is having an ardent, reception, responsive,

temperament or tending to give oneself wholly to whatever engages one's

interest or liking (Webster: 198 p.757)

3. Kind hearted

Kind is the equivalent of what has been offered or received. Kind is

applying more often to the disposition to sympathy and helpfulness.

Kindly is stressing more the expression of the sympathetic, helpful nature,

mood or impulse (a kind person with a kindly interest in the problem of

other). Kindhearted is having sympathetic nature: Humane,

compassionate. Kindheartedness is the quality or state of being

kindhearted. (Webster: 1981 p.1243).

4. Honesty

Honesty is estimable character; fairness and straight forwardness of

conduct or adherence to the fact. Honesty is freedom from subterfuge or

duplicity, truthfulness, and sincerity. (Webster 1981 p.1086).

Love is fell affection for. Love is a communications code word for

the letter. Love is fell referent adoration for (God). (Webster: 1981

p.134t). Affection is action of affection or state of being affected.

Affection is kind feeling tender attachment: love, good, will. Affection is a

strong emotion or passion (as anger, fear or hatred); feeling aspect of

consciousness (as in pleasue or displeasure); to bend of mind: feeling or

natural impulse swaying the mind: propensity, disposition. (Webster 1981

p.35).

6. Loyalty

Loyalty is loyal manner, Loyalness is the quality, state, or an

instance of being loyal: fidelity or tenacious adherence. Loyal is faithful

and the devoted to a private person: faithful or tenacious in adherence to s

cause, ideal, practice or custom. (Webster: 1981 p.1342)

7. Peace-Loving

Peace is harmony in human or personal relation. A mental or

spiritual condition marked by freedom from disturbance or oppressive

thoughts or emotion. (Webster: 1981 p.1660) Loving word is from love, a

lover section or attitude. (Webster: 1981 p.1340)

Perseverance is the action or the fact or an instance of persevering,

continued or steadfast pursuit or prosecution of an undertaking or aim.

Perseverance is the condition or power of persevering. persistence in the

pursuit of objectives or prosecution of any project. Perseverant is able or

willing to persevere. (Webster: 1981 p.1685).

9. Self-confidence

Self-Confidence is Confident in one self. Self-confident is

confident of one's own strength or ability. (Webster: 1981 p.2059)

10. Sincerity

Sincerity is the quality or state of being sincere: an expression of a

sincere feeling. (Webster: 1981 p.2122).

11. Strong Belief

Strong is able to bear or endure: able to with-stand stress or violence; having or exibiting moral or intelectual force, endurence or vigor. (Webster

1981 p.2265). Belief is a state or habit of mind in which trust, confidence, reliance, is place in some person or thing. Belief is something believed, statement or body of statement held by the advocates of any class of views; conviction of the truth of some statement or the reality of some being or

accepting it as true or real (Webster: 1981 p.2000).

2.3. Definition of Song lyric

In this present time or for the past few decades, people has been found another way to communicate or to delivered what their feelings for some reason to another person or for people in the society. People use song demonstrate their feelings through the emotions in the song. As one of an entertainment, song takes a place as a way to tells a story by mental image that giving the illusion and it is necessary because it becomes part of human life in this present time. As William

(1824:2) said “The only reality in music is the state of mind wich it induces in the listener”.

According to Little (1970:174) lyric derived from Greek “Lyricos” meaning “ singing to the lyres”, “the rhythm of the entire globe written out likepoetry”. The song lyric is specifically intended for singing. This intention affects diction, content and stanza form. The song lyric is particularly unified and simple. A tune has its own emotional character, and it is words will need to be of words and music. Human is the creature that knows how to react not only in the physical environmeng but also in the symbols that they made”.

California-based singer/songwriter Jason Mraz makes laid-back, melodic pop with stylistic nods toward folk, jam band music, hip-hop, and soft rock. Since coming to the public's attention with his 2002 hit single "The Remedy (Don't

Worry)", Mraz has proven himself to be a reliable pop craftsman whose crowd- pleasing melodies can encompass both cheeky humor and earnest sincerity.

Born in Mechanicsville, Virginia, in 1977, Mraz grew up amidst the sounds of the Dave Matthews Bandand local roots musicians the Agents of Good

Roots. However, it was Mraz's interest and participation in musical theater that

York to attend the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, but dropped out a year later whenhe took up the guitar and began to focus on songwriting.

Nonetheless, Mraz's training as a vocalist would later show itself on his debut album, which was marked by the pure clarity of his tenor range.After busking around New York, Mraz eventually returned to Virginia; in 1999, however, he made his way out West and settled in San Diego, California, having been drawn to the city's coffeehouse scene and its historical support of singer/songwriters, most notably Jewel. Mraz began playing shows and soon landed a weekly residency at the local hot spot Java Joe's, which had previously played host to Jewel during the early stages of her career. He also formed a duo with drummer Noel "Toca" Rivera, who accompanied Mraz's acoustic material by playing the djembe. Together, the musicians honed a live show that featured as much comedic banter as actual music.

In 2010, Mraz spent some time in London, England, where he worked on songs for his new album with the producer Martin Terefeand wrote with the

British singer-songwriter, Dido. In August 2010, Mraz had a Q&A interview with Spin magazine in which he said that possible titles for his fourth album were Peace Canoe or The Love Album.

On December 8, 2011, Mraz told Jeff Benjamin of Billboard that the

"album is finished" except for one track he was attempting to re-work as an acoustic version. Describing the album, he said, "It's not a departure in the sound

There's a couple of up-tempo tunes, but mostly the rhythm of the heartbeat kind of takes precedence on this record. Medium-tempo tunes; which I love. It feels more like the pace of life. At least, based on my life and what I've been doing.

On January 20, 2012, during a performance streamed live from the Bing Bar at the

Sundance Film Festival, Mraz told the audience that the album's title was Love.
