All the data of the annual reports returned by 17 February 2013 were included in this edition. This year, 124 out of 134 institutions that keep pygmy hippos responded to our annual questionnaire. This studbook lists a total of 1409 (563.782.64) pygmy hippos. On 31 December 2012, the International Studbook records 339 (139.206.4) living pygmy hippopotami kept in 131 institutions. The EEP population comprises a total of 126 (51.75) living individuals in 57 institutions. The usage of this studbook is to show where and how many pygmy hippos are held in captivity. Moreover, the studbook information is used for regular in-depth regional and global demographic and genetic analyses of the living population. Since pygmy hippos are kept on all continents, all regions benefit from this studbook, and in particular Europe and North America, where coordinated breeding programmes exist, which depend on the studbook information for their functioning. The total number of captive pygmy hippos includes: 50.63 (113) animals in 36 institutions in the Asian region; 3.3 (6) animals in 3 institutions in the Australasian region; 50.87 (137) animals in 60 institutions in the European region; 18.34.4 (61) animals in 16 institutions in the North American region; 4.3 (7) animals in 4 institutions in the Central and South American regions; 14.12 (26) in 12 institutions in the African region. The focus of this edition of the studbook is on current research projects. In chapter 5, various interesting and ongoing research projects on aspects of captive pygmy hippo nutrition, genetics, and reproduction as well as on population structure, habitat preference, activity patterns, PKD, pathogens and parasites in wild pygmy hippos are presented. In addition, in a workshop in Monrovia, a national action plan for the pygmy hippo in Liberia was developed in December 2012, which is presented in chapter 4. Zoo Basel Beatrice Steck, international studbook keeper ZOO BASEL Page 3 of 148 ZOO BASEL International Studbook Pygmy Hippopotamus 2012 2 Biological Data Distribution: Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Ivory Coast Population status: vulnerable, CITES Appendix II Habitat: Their preferred habitat is the border zone between rain forest and swamps, they only rarely live exclusively in swamps. They avoid open areas. Their resting places are almost always in the swamp but rarely in the water. They can be dry or humid but not wet. They are always in the shade and several runways lead to and from the resting place. Their favourite resting places are under the low Rhaphia palm trees (Ivory Coast). Food: The animals feed most of the time in the forest even though it is more dangerous than in the swamps, but there is more food available and moving is easier. They prefer browsers and ferns, in addition, some swamp plants are uprooted and eaten whole and some forest weeds are grazed on. Behaviour: Pygmy hippos actively seek food between 4 pm and 11 pm, but they are not nocturnal. They sleep or doze from midnight until early afternoon. They spend an average of six hours seeking food. The animals live solitarily, the females by ignoring other females, the males by actively threatening and aggressively chasing male competitors out of their territories. The home ranges of females measure between 40-60 ha and they overlap in great parts. The females avoid each other with their very acute sense of smell by marking the runways with their dung, but they do not have communal dung heaps. The ranges of the males are two to three times bigger than the females' and they do not overlap, but they include several female home ranges. Senses of smell and hearing are the primary senses for orientation. Vision is secondary because of the density of the undergrowth. In the case of danger, they always flee away from the threat. Reproduction: One calf, rarely twins. Mothers give birth in shallow water pools and they visit their offspring only a few times per day for suckling. Birth weight: approximately 5.7 kg Gestation length: average 199 days (187-214 days) Oestrus cycle: average 35 days First reproduction: 4-5 years In captivity: youngest female 2 y 3 m, youngest male 3 y 4 m. Among the animals with known birth date and age, male “Hannibal” in Stuttgart, studbook number 241, born on 19 October 1966, was still alive on 31 December 2012. In Bukit Barisan Selatan and Way Kambas National Parks, Rhino Protection Units continue to safeguard wild populations of Sumatran rhinos from poaching. In Way Kambas, the teams also are working with local communities on alternative farm- ing practices, so that they can earn income for their families without encroaching on the park to clear land and plant crops. Saving the Sumatran rhino will require a balanced approach of caring for the wild population as well as building up the small captive population. This year, female ‘Ratu’ at the Sumatran Rhino Sanctu- ary became pregnant twice, but unfortunately miscarried both times, which is not uncommon for a young female. We have our fingers crossed for another pregnancy soon! In India, we translocated two female greater one-horned rhino to Manas National Park in Assam as part of Indian Rhino Vision 2020.

This calf is the last surviving offspring of rhino #2, one of the first rhinos translocated to the park, and the last of the program’s breeding males. Poachers killed rhino #2 last year. The ongoing political insurgency movement, credited with the last two poaching losses, led the Indian Rhino Vision 2020 (IRV 2020) partners to hold off moving any other animals to the park until security issues are resolved. The report from the IRV 2020 Population Modeling Workshop held in November 2014, convened by the Government of Assam, the IRF, WWF, the IUCN Conservation Breeding Specialist and Asian Rhino Specialist Groups, will shortly be available for download from the IRF website. The workshop was developed to review progress with IRV 2020 translocations to-date (a) discussing and determining the real numbers needed for the long-term success of the IRV 2020, taking into account the Manas poaching losses; (b) modeling predicted population growth rates and the numbers of rhinos needed to make the translocations successful; and (c) discussing ways to deal with known threats as well as unforeseen events. The workshop focused primarily on Manas National Park and the next reintroduction site, the Laokhowa-Burachapori complex, but other areas also were discussed and modeled.

We administered semi-structured interviews and open-ended questionnaires with senior scouts who are a member of the local communities. Historical records were obtained to evaluate the population trends of the animals since 1974. The density of the animal decreased from 65 in 1974 to 1 individual per 100 km2 in 2014 with a decline of 98.5% in the past 40 years. The respondents agreed that the conservation status of the park was in its worst condition ever now with only 2 Swayne’s Hartebeest left, with a rapid decline from 4 individuals in 2012 and 12 individuals in 2009. Mainly hunting and habitat loss, but also unsuitable season of reproduction and shortage of forage as minor factors were identified as threats for the local extinction of the Swayne’s Hartebeests.

Obama called choosing a dog a “major issue” for the new first family. It seems that pets have always been very popular with U.S. presidents. Only two of the 44 presidents -- Chester A. Arthur and Franklin Pierce -- left no record of having pets. Many presidents and their children had dogs and cats in the White House. President and Mrs. Bush have two dogs and a cat living with them -- the dogs are named Barney and Miss Beazley and the cat is India. But there have been many unusual presidential pets as well. President Calvin Coolidge may have had the most pets. NEWS WORD BOX He had a pygmy hippopotamus, six dogs, a bobcat, a goose, a donkey, a cat, two lion cubs, an antelope, and popular issue record wallaby a wallaby. President Herbert Hoover had several dogs pygmy hippopotamus and his son had two pet alligators, which sometimes took walks outside the White House. Caroline Kennedy, the daughter of President John F. Kennedy, had a pony named Macaroni. She would ride Macaroni around the White House grounds. Some pets also worked while at the White House. Pauline the cow was the last cow to live at the White House. She provided milk for President William Taft. To save money during World War I, President Woodrow Wilson brought in a flock of sheep to trim the White House lawn. The flock included a ram named Old Ike.

    117 Wildlife Trends in Liberia and Sierra Leone P. T. Robinson In an eight-month field study of the pygmy hippopotamus, an endangered Red Book species, the author was able to make some assessment of the status of other animals in Liberia and Sierra Leone and shows how the danger is increasing for most of them. Chimpanzees in particular are exported in large numbers, and in order to catch the young animals whole family groups may be eliminated. West African countries have made little effort to conserve their unique types of vegetation and wildlife. Instead the tendency has been to establish parks and reserves in grassland areas that are similar to those of East Africa. But Sierra Leone, Liberia and the Ivory Coast all have areas of mature tropical rain forests where reserves could be established. The high forests of the tropics are of great value, culturally, scientifically and economically, and it is important to conserve their unique types of fauna and flora. Rare and Uncommon Species The pygmy hippopotamus Choeropsis liberiensis is one of West Africa's unique species, dependent on forest vegetation, which is decreasing seriously. Nowhere is it abundant in the four countries where it occurs: Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia and Ivory Coast! Comparisons with its past distribution show that populations today are much more localised; for example, the disrupted distribution pattern across Liberia is related to the major motor-road arteries, which form avenues of human settlement. Increased population, hunting, agriculture, forestry and mining, combined with the hippo's non-gregarious nature, low repro- ductive rate and apparent susceptibility to hunting and adverse land use, have resulted in a steady decrease in its range.
