Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon
SONOMA COUNTY CABERNET SAUVIGNON For more than three decades, Kenwood Vineyards Artist Series remains the ultimate expression of artistry and ne winemaking by blending the nest Cabernet Sauvignon produced in Sonoma County. THE ARTIST Clare E. Rojas (born 1976) tells stories though painting, music, installations and video work. Her narratives used to be based in folk art tableaus that tackled gender stereotypes. Recently she has moved into pure geometric abstractions. She sees them as part of a continuum free of limitations and tied to her interest in color, line, shape and space. The geometric abstractions reference West Coast modernism, Quaker art, Native American textiles, Byzantine mosaics, and Outsider art. “For me the shift to abstraction was personal. There are a couple of challenges I find in abstraction. One is letting go of the idea that the viewer is supposed to perceive my work one way. There is no right or wrong way to look at the work.” Based in San Francisco, CA Clare takes inspiration for her art from her surroundings. For the Untitled piece featured on the 2013 label, Clare was moved to capture the reflection of light and shadow of a landscape over the course of a day, capturing time in moments. The International Wine Review
Complimentary Copy The International Wine Review California Zinfandel: A New Look Foreword by Joel Peterson Special Double Issue May/June 2017 1 Foreward Zinfandel has a long history in California. Much of that history is about adaptation to changing circumstance. The last 40 years have brought more change to the style and quality of the wines made from Zinfandel than ever before. Hence, while much has been written about this grape and its wine over the years, it is a bit surprising that a comprehensive up-to-date synopsis of its history in California, the growing regions that it inhabits, the winemakers who have wholeheartedly embraced it, or the excellent wines that are crafted from Zinfandel has not emerged. Fortunately that has changed with this report. As the modern California wine business has emerged from the late 1960’s the skill of its winemakers, the understanding of viticulture, wine making technology and consumer enthusiasm have all reach levels never before achieved. This has benefited Zinfandel greatly. Its ancient DNA has found a comfortable fit in the evolving California wine scene. The wines are better, at all levels, than they have ever been. The current review of California Zinfandel from the good people at the International Wine Review could not come at a more opportune time. They have written a thorough review of the current state of Zinfandel in California, its history, growing regions, winemakers, wineries and of course, its wine. While I cannot endorse the scores given the wines, as they are entirely the opinion of the International Wine Review. -
California Wine Guide California
CALIFORNIA WINE GUIDE CALIFORNIA California is the center of the wine world in the United States. Every one of the world’s noble grape varieties thrives in California’s diverse microclimates and soil types. Though as a wine-producing region California is relatively young, the soils that contribute to California’s finest wines have been developing for 10 million years. The first vinifera vines were planted by Franciscan missionaries in 1770 but it wasn’t until two centuries later, having survived Prohibition and phylloxera, that California’s wine industry truly gained momentum. Today, nearly 90% of all wines made in the United States are produced in California and it is home to the great majority of the country’s American Viticultural Areas (AVAs). • Reading a California Wine Label • Understanding California’s AVAs and Terroir • Recognizing St. Francis Winery & Vineyards Sequoia Grove and Wild Oak wines California Grape Cakebread Cellars Varieties Benziger Family Winery • Identifying Domaine Carneros California’s “Green” Practices • Exploring California Wine Regions • Kobrand’s Foley Estates California Portfolio THE CALIFORNIA WINE LABEL Brand or Proprietary Name The name used by the bottler to identify the product. Kendall – Jackson Grand Reserve Chardonnay
2015 Matanzas Creek Sonoma Sauvignon Blanc Price: $39.95 + refundable bottle deposit and handling fee Varietal: Sauvignon Blanc Brand: Mantanzas Creek LCBO Product #: 360593 LCBO: Region: Sonoma County, California, USA Category: Regular Consignment Bottles Per Case: 12 Bottle Size: 750ml Availability Availability in consignment Background Founded in 1977, Matanzas Creek Winery is located on the site of a retired dairy farm in Sonoma County's Bennett Valley. In 1985, the original winery, a converted dairy barn, gave way to a modern winemaking facility and since that time the Estate's Bennett Valley vineyards have grown to include over 280-acres of Chardonnay, Merlot and Syrah. Vineyard acquisitions in Sonoma Valley, Carneros, Russian River Valley and Knights Valley provide the vineyard management and winemaking teams with an enviable selection of fruit. Sourced from Estate-owned vineyards, the Matanzas Creek wine portfolio includes Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Merlot, as well as a limited amount of Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. As important as the history of the winery itself is its location in Sonoma County's newest American Viticultural Area (AVA), Bennett Valley. Although only formally recognized as an AVA in December 2003, Bennett Valley has a rich history of grape growing dating back to the mid-1800s. Once defined as part of Sonoma County's Sonoma Valley and Sonoma Mountain AVA's, Bennett Valley overlaps with these winegrowing regions but carves out 8,150 acres to call its own (of which 850 acres are planted with grapevines). Three mountains define Bennett Valley and also serve to capture a cool maritime air stream which promotes a cooler, longer growing season that results in more complex wines.
