Intro In the News Nintendo NX http://www.gamerevolution.com/news/nxisnotthewiiussuccessorsaysnintendoceo36755 ● March 2017 launch making it 4.5 years between consoles ● Prolonged lack of core titles on WiiU no new zelda, just ports of previous titles Playstation 4.5 Neo and Morpheus ● Neo buffed hardware to support VR, among other things ● Same price as original $399, which is odd because it’s only been 2 years since launch of PS4 ● This must’ve been planned Morpheus was announced in 2014, PS 4 released in NA Nov 2013 New trailer for JJ Trek 3 and Paramount starting to ‘get it’ It’s OK to be unimpressed and unenthused about the upcoming Ghostbusters movie. Just don’t be a sexist douchelord. Headcanon entitlement Nuke this for next pocast? Mavel’s cinimatic universe (including TV) what they’re doing right what they could do better and what we want to see Because it appears to be a big baggaboo topic among comic book fans...Good grief. It's called the illusion of change. Marvel and DC have done this for decades. It's just like when Cap was shot, Batman's back was broken, Superman was separated into two beings of light, SpiderMan died and his body was possessed by Doc Oc, Green Lantern became Parallax, Superman died, Professor X died, Jean Grey died, Professor X became Onslaught (inhales), Ironman became a teenager,...Cap became US Agent, Cap became Nomad, SpiderMan publicly unmasked, etc. in many of these examples, executives swore this was how it was going to be moving forward. Check back in about six to nine months. I wager a bag full of "I told you so" that it will turn out that "Hydra Cap" will have been the temporary result of some villain using some sort of reality warping muffin. II. In religious contexts it is usually a disclosure of something hidden, “a vision of heavenly secrets that can make sense of earthly realities". Apocalypse as underlying truth of all mythology ● Eschatology/ apocalypse is metaphor in various capacities ● En Sabah Nur, The first mutant. The alpha, and omega (as it were) you’ll remember the old 90s apocalypse actually had an omega symbol on his belt. Beginning and end of the greek alphebet. ● Death, Famine, Pestilence, War biblical horsemen Reveleations 1:8 & 6:19(for non catholics, a brief reading) IT’S CULTURALLY SIGNIFICANT! ● Xfactor #10 (1986) first appearance of Apocalypse ● Four horsemen/persons several incarnations of this, they are more positions on a team than people, per se ● In the movie, it’s clearly going to be Psylocke, Angel, Storm, and Magneto because many of the horsemen from the comics have not been introduced Caliban, Grim Reaper, Plague, for example this is a limitation of film over comics. ● Why the fuck has Ghost Rider never been a horseman of the apocalypse? He’s literally based on death? Wolverine has been death, which makes some sense. Impressions/Talking Points Joe ● So many characters! YESS! You are actually doing XMen right! ● I actually like XMen movies more than the Avengers, there I said it. ● Poor Olivia Munn, they only gave her like three lines and she had to wear that awful 80’s unitard the whole time, got billing under Jubilee ● Never called Angel ARCHANGEL! Fuck you Sony, officially. ● Aside from makeup, they did Apocalypse right. Great demagogue, who is actually just in it for themselves. ● Wolverine, weaponx cameo was awesome! IV. Degree awarded December 2014 ii © 2014 Joshua Michael Plencner iii DISSERTATION ABSTRACT Joshua Michael Plencner Doctor of Philosophy Department of Political Science December 2014 Title: Four-Color Political Visions: Origin, Affect, and Assemblage in American Superhero Comic Books This project develops extant theories of political affect and relational identification and affinity formation by tracing how the visual images of an understudied archive—American superhero comic books—work to build multiple, alternative, fitful, inchoate, and sometimes radically creative spaces for visions of the political to take shape and develop over time. By analyzing and interpreting the generic superhero phenomenon of origin stories in comic books and by mapping the formal and narrative techniques used to construct origin stories, I show how received understandings of power, order, justice, violence, whiteness, masculinity, and heteronormativity often linger outside of language in an analytically untapped relational space between bodies—the space of political affect.

  • Aliens and Amazons: Myth, Comics and the Cold War Mentality in Fifth-Century Athens and Postwar America
ALIENS AND AMAZONS: MYTH, COMICS AND THE COLD WAR MENTALITY IN FIFTH-CENTURY ATHENS AND POSTWAR AMERICA Peter L. Kuebeck A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS May 2006 Committee: Leigh Ann Wheeler, Advisor James M. Pfundstein Robert Buffington ii ABSTRACT Leigh Ann Wheeler, Advisor Comic books and classical culture seem to be increasingly linked in recent years, whether through crossovers into one another's media or through portrayals in the mass media itself. Such a connection begs the question of the actual cultural relevance between these two particular cultural products and whether or not two such products can be found to be relevant to one another when separated by time and space - indeed, if two separate cultures experienced similar cultural pressures, would these cultural products represent these pressures in similar ways? Given previous scholarly work linking the Cold War-era in the United States and the Peloponnesian War in fifth-century Greece politically, this thesis argued that a cultural "Cold War mentality" existed both in early postwar America and fifth-century Athens, and that this "Cold War mentality" is exhibited similarly in the comic books and mythology produced in those eras. This mentality is comprised of three stages: increased patriotism, a necessary identification of a cultural other, and attempts by a threatened male society to obtain psychological power through the "domestication" of women. The methods of this thesis included cultural research as well as research into myth and comic books of the respective eras.

  • Marvel Comics Avengers Chronological Appearances by Bob Wolniak
Marvel Comics Avengers Chronological Appearances By Bob Wolniak ased initially on the Bob Fronczak list from Avengers Assemble and Avengers Forever websites. But unlike Mr. B Fronczak’s list (that stops about the time of Heroes Reborn) this is NOT an attempt at a Marvel continuity (harmony of Marvel titles in time within the fictional universe), but Avengers appearances in order in approx. real world release order . I define Avengers appearances as team appearances, not individual Avengers or even in some cases where several individual Avengers are together (but eventually a judgment call has to be made on some of those instances). I have included some non-Avengers appearances since they are important to a key storyline that does tie to the Avengers, but noted if they did not have a team appearance. Blue (purple for WCA & Ultimates) indicates an Avengers title , whether ongoing or limited series. I have decided that Force Works is not strictly an Avengers title, nor is Thunderbolts, Defenders or even Vision/Scarlet Witch mini- series, although each book correlates, crosses over and frequently contains guest appearances of the Avengers as a team. In those cases, the individual issues are listed. I have also decided that individual Avengers’ ongoing or limited series books are not Avengers team appearances, so I have no interest in the tedious tracking of every Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, or Hank Pym title unless they contain a team appearance or x-over . The same applies to Avengers Spotlight (largely a Hawkeye series, with other individual appearances), Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Vision, Wonder Man, Hulk, She-Hulk, Black Panther, Quicksilver, Thunderstrike, War Machine, Black Widow, Sub-Mariner, Hercules, and other such books or limited series.

  • Character Costs
    Here are the numbers I came up with for the creation costs of the characters in the Guide to the X-Men. I did not include any challenges into the totals (besides mutant and dead broke) as it seemed to me it would take as long to try to guess at these as it did just to do the totals. BTW we have a new champion! Check out Onslaught’s total! (And I think Apocalypse should probably be worth more, charging 110w for his transform self was low-balling it significantly really. Plus the only gear I charged whim for was the armour.) The worst is Anarchist at 14w 2r, only 2w 1r above a lowly Brood. Character Abilities Actions Modifiers Gear Total Anarchist 6w 8w 2r 3w 0w 14w 2r Apocalypse 41w 122w 155w 3w+ 318w ~Made the Transform worth 10w for unlimited forms +100w the rest of it. ~Made Manipulate Matter a +3 cost (+2 for extraordinary power, +1 for create/manipulate) ~I didn’t charge for Celestial Ship. Couldn’t begin to guess. Archangel 9w 19w 17w 2r 0w 42w 2r Avalanche 5w 2r 28w 2r 2r 3w 35w Banshee 5w 2r 55w 3w 0w 60w 2r Bishop 9w 2r 24w 6w 1r 30w 67w Brood 6w 1r 1w 5w 0w 12w 1r Brood, First Born 6w 1r 3w 7w 0w 16w 1r Caliban 20w 2r 21w 1r 21w 0w 58w Callisto 8w 17w 2r 7w 0w 27w 2r Cannonball 8w 2r 30w 1w 1r 0w 36w 2r Captain Britain 34w 36w 6w 2r 15w 86w 2r ~Gave him a 5w challenge for being restricted to Britain.
