Parnell Cricket Club Incorporated - Established 1858 Update No. 86 2015/16 Season has Started! From Our Chairman, Craig Presland: Big thanks to all PCC junior player parents and volunteers who help out Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to all parents, and even some non-parents, of our junior players (grades 1 to 10) who have agreed to help out as volunteers within their respective teams over the coming cricket season. Many of these people have been giving up their time and contributing to PCC junior cricket for many years now while others will be new to PCC this season (welcome!). Without you all we would not be able to enter teams into the various competitions (EDCA and ACA), coach the boys and girls during the week, plan ahead and provide key communications to other parents throughout each week, umpire and score on Saturdays etc. In fact the list of roles and tasks goes well beyond that including those who are grade co-ordinators, rep ream selectors and coaches, junior committee members, Board members etc. I would also like to thank all parents of PCC junior players who are committed to getting their sons and daughters (and others) to and from trainings during the week as well as matches on Saturdays, provide food, drink, playing gear and equipment, cricket whites, hats and sunscreen etc, as well as full moral support for their children in playing in this wonderful game of cricket. Interest in cricket is now booming along nationally since the highly successful Cricket World Cup that was held in NZ and Australia earlier this year and junior enrolments are up significantly at many clubs including PCC. After coaching junior cricket at PCC for 9 seasons now as a parent of 2 boys I can safely say that the rewards can be huge and it is very much a case of the more one puts in the more one benefits as a coach intrinsically. Rewards like seeing that batsman who struggles at the start of the season grow in confidence so that he (or she) reaches those 10’s, 20’s and 30’s come the end of the season, or those players (and parents) with little understating of the game in October become “Hooked on Cricket” come the end of March, or seeing a real team spirit develop whereby the boys (and girls) are really supporting and playing for each other in a true team environment supported by enthusiastic parents. Being able to coach PCC junior teams is infact a real privilege with the greatest reward for me being the sight of all 11 players improving their skills over season, having lots of fun and wanting to come back again next summer for more. Infact often it becomes lots more! What we have at PCC is a family-friendly club of approx. 800 players (senior and junior), superb facilities (TJC, the newly upgraded Shore Rd playing surface and its 7 lane outdoor nets, Bloodworth Park), excellent coaching from the club’s 4 professional coaches (Ian Trott, Simon Herbst, Jonathan McInroy and Tim McIntosh), an experienced Club Manager, Board and Junior / Senior Committees, and most important of all many wonderful parents and volunteers who give so much in supporting their respective junior teams and the club overall. As with any organisation, sporting or non-sporting, it is the people who really make it succeed. Have a wonderful 2015/16 cricket season! Best Regards Craig Presland PCC Chairman Premiers Underway with Win And a Ton to Tim! Jeff Crowe Cup – Limited Over Championship Our team: Back – Ganesh Ratnasabapathy, Tom Hills, Jesse Simpson, Tom Talbot, Tim McIntosh Front – Mike Ravlic, Ben Horne, Dave Goddard (Captain), George Harper jnr, Mark Chapman, Beenash Nambiar Saturday 10 October WAITAKERE vs. PARNELL Te Atatu Domain PARNELL 313/5 (50) Tim McIntosh 103 (103), Ben Horne 44 (60), Tom Talbot 24 (24), Jesse Simpson 72 (62)*, Dave Goddard 35* (22) WAITAKERE 192 (47) S Chick 67 (99), G Ratnatsabapathy 3/31 (8), Tom Hills 3/21 (7.1) Mark Chapman 2/50 (10) PARNELL WON BY 122 RUNS Dave Goddard won the toss and Parnell made a solid start. Only 32 runs were scored in the first 8 overs but Tim and Ben played themselves in sensibly and then upped the pace. Ben lost his wicket unexpectedly after a fine opening stand of 88 but Tom Talbot kept up the momentum withsome well timed shots. All along, Tim was as solid as a rock, going from strength to strength and showed what a superb limited over batsman he is scoring at a run a ball. Then Tom’s cameo ended at 157 when tried to pull a long hop. The ball didn’t get up as expected and he was bowled. Mark Chapman was caught for 4 just 11 runs on. Tim then dominated but immediately on reaching his 100 was caught at short fine leg when flicking one off his hip – 4/220. Georger Harper had the misfortune to be run out immediately but then it was just a scamper to make the most of the remaining overs. Jesse Simpson – a newcomer from Dunedin’s University Grange club - had settled in and, with the Skipper, pulverised the attack in the closing overs. Jesse’s was a very impressive debut for Parnell and 6s flew as the 300 came up. Waitakere’s innings started with more downs than up. Ganesh, into the wind, bowled a good tight maidenbut Waitakere’s other opener flayed at Rav and got away with some streaky shots. This couldn’t last and Ganesh struck twice and then Dusun Hakaraia’s wicket fell, to Beenash, another newcomer. Beenash, a pace bowler, has arrived from Hawkes Bay where he played for Cornwall and, before that, he played in Taranaki. Chick and young Lombard (a lad that Trotty has been coaching one on one) made a bit of a stand but it was broken by Chappie enticing the latter out of his ground and Ben smartly completed the stumping. There were furtherpockets of resistance but Tom Hills then put in an impressive spell, picking up 3 wickets and it was all over. Summing up, a most impressive start for our batsmen and a very good workout for our bowler CRAIG SPEAKMAN’S FIRST DAY PHOTOS Craig now has a new camera – note the improved quality of the photos! Thanks Craig for the great coverage of Day !. Our openers opening up – Tim hitting a colossal 6 and Ben middling a pull Tom Talbot cutting – he played a little gem of an innings – and Tim reaching his 100 Newcomer Jesse – he hammered ‘cow corner’ but also hit a succession of superbly orthodox straight drives. Several cleared the boundary and his 77* in double quick time was invaluable Skipper Dave joined in the fun and then it was the bowler’s turn – Ganesh bowling with fire and accuracy Mike, too,and Beenash – both had good workouts Tom Hills came on as the 4th seamer and bowld particularly well for his 3 wickets and Dave added variety with his offies. No photo of Chappie who provided additional spin and enticed a stumping. RWC – Deja Vue? A timely reminder (and apologies for mentioning an out of season sport) but back in October 2011 members of the French Rugby team had a “workout” at the TJC. Till then their RWC campaign had been uninspiring but, following this session, they beat Wales in the Quarter Final and all will remember that France played like men possessed in the Final. To the extent that the ABs were distinctly fortunate to come out victors. Fingers crossed for upcoming Quarter Final – GO THE ALL BLACKS!!! Four years at the TJC – no mistaking where these lads came from! French rugby legend, Emile Ntamack, received tuition from David Ellis, their Yorkshire born Defence Coach, and Retiere Didier (Forward Coach) displayed a bowling action that may not pass scrutiny under match conditions PastJunior Enrolments FROM ALAN GRAHAM: Dear Bryan Your readers might like to hear about my introduction to Parnell cricket. Aged 11, I was encouraged by friends at school to join the Remuera Parnell Sports Club and with great anticipation I turned up to the first practice at Bloodworth Park. Unfortunately there was present only one adult, the Parnell club captain J V R “Vic” McLean, and some 25 boys. How was Vic, also known as a national lawn bowls champion, going to handle that many players by himself? His answer was to run an open wicket practice in which he batted with boy after boy and ran them all out going for impossible singles. Finally it was my turn to bat and just as Vic faced up another adult appeared at square leg and called out to Vic. Distracted, he missed the ball, and so did the keeper, so I called “yes” and ran. I made the striker’s end quite easily but Vic, still somewhat confused, was run out at the bowler’s end. Boy was I the hero! The lad who ran out Mr McLean! And I had been a member of Parnell cricket for only an hour. I then got in a team and had one more moment of glory that year. In a match v Orakei at the Orakei Domain, I clean bowled Ross Morgan. I was told that didn’t often happen as Ross made 50 or so each week and usually retired. Regards Alan Remuera Parnell Sports Club’s Opening Day, 1954 Coach JVR (Vic) McLean is on far right. Other coaches are Brian Gascoigne (far left) and Don Morris (sitting in front) Mark Burgess, later double international cricket & soccer is 5th from right.
